if they dump peter alliss, i sure hope someone over here picks him up... i love listening to him...
-
maybe he just doesn't like to play golf anymore... it really could be that simple... to many athletes, the "game" is a means to an end... they don't necessarily "love the game"... they play it because they are good at it and it makes them money...

a whole boatload of day's points have "full value" right now, and even though those points will eventually go into rot mode, right now (and for several weeks) he's not losing nearly the percentage of his point total that the other two are... so if none of them played until the end of the year, i'd hazard a guess that day would naturally float to the top, simply because he'd hang on to more of his points (as he should)... also, jordan is well above the maximum divisor, while jason is still below the minimum... so just going on those things (and the above), it would seem like it would end up jason, jordan, rory on 12/31/15... again, assuming they don't play between now and then (which is highly unlikely)... is there really an "end of the year" anymore? the end of the calendar year coincides with exactly nothing in golf... heck, bubba or rickie could conceivably overtake all of them by the end of the year...

well, technically they could put him in the hall of fame, even if he chooses not to acknowledge the honor... it would make for a rather awkward induction ceremony though when the inductee didn't show up...
Yes Drew, that's exactly what I meant. The reporters who say he's not good at any one thing but is good because of his mental tenacity and sheer will power should look at the table. He said he had a bad iron/long game day and yet he still managed to play decent, which I interpret as he has a pretty good long game. He doesn't hit it a country mile, but he gets it out there.
 sometimes, i need to think a little harder about the point someone is trying to make before i post...

Rolling Back Equipment to 1980s Specs for Tour Players
ccotenj replied to Mike Boatright's topic in Tour Talk
what's interesting (to me, anyway), is that golf is not the only sport that suffers from "old vs. new"... i'm a really big cycling fan, and the "old vs. new" parcours/races/the sport in general "discussions" can get rather heated... "tradition", while it should be given its proper place, should not (and does not) mean "do everything the same forever"... golf, more than any other sport, REALLY needs to get over its hide-bound "traditions"*... * the temptation to rant about rules written 400 years ago for courses "built" by sheep is strong here, but i'll stay on topic... -
Rolling Back Equipment to 1980s Specs for Tour Players

this is a good analogy... let's take wrigley field for example... the place is a dump... the best thing they could do to it is blow it up... and as big of a red sox fan as i am, and as many fond youthful memories i have of the place, the same goes for fenway... and here in philly, we have good old franklin field, where you still pee up against a wall... a question that needs to be asked: "did they only build great golf courses 100 (or so) years ago?"... if this is your position, then yes, i can see how you are upset that certain courses can no longer fit the needs of the "modern" tour (25,000-40,000 spectators, amenities for them, parking, transportation, etc.)... it's easy to say "length is killing off the older classic courses", but everything else needs to be taken into consideration as well... conversely, i believe there have been several great (and several "not so great") courses built since "the classics" were built... so there is no dearth of high quality places for them to play... nothing lasts forever... i went to the us open at merion... i wish that they hadn't hosted it... having played the course, the us open setup was no longer "merion"... -
I heard this was the 1st time since 1973 two guys had 5+ wins, I think it was Nicklaus and Weiskopf that year. Thought for sure Tiger and Vijay had done it once or twice but guess not. Pretty amazing tour season. We could see 3 guys do it in the next few years with McIlroy in the mix too.
came close twice... in 2003 and 2005, vijay had 4, and tiger had 5 and 6, respectively... vijay had 9 in 2004, but tiger was in swing change land then, and only had 1... winning 5 times in one year is hard... since it has been 42 years since even 2 players have done it in one year, it is difficult to see 3 of them doing it in the same year... especially when we throw our good friend "strength of field" in there... heck, the odds are pretty darn long that even one of them will win 5 times next year, let alone all 3... 5 win seasons are relatively rare beasts... consider this... only 110 players ever have 10 career wins, and that list includes many players who competed in a time when strength of field was, ummm, a joke...

That record will never come close to being broken, much like Cal Ripken's consecutive games played record. 142 tourneys w/o an MC is more impressive to me than 18 majors.
meant to multi-quote, hit the wrong button... i hate mondays... yes, that number is ridiculous, once you really think about it... he basically went 7-8 straight years without missing a cut... and on very few occasions was it even close... you can probably count on one hand the times he made it on the number (or even close to the number)... someone will no doubt comment that there are some "no cut" events in there... while true, that does not change the impressiveness (to make up a word) of that streak... interesting comparison you make in the last sentence...

if i am wearing a hat of any kind, i remove it to shake hands, regardless of where i am (i also remove it when i go inside)... i did not learn to do this on the golf course... similar to always opening and closing the car door for my wife (or any other female, ftm), it is something that i was taught at a young age... i freely admit i am an old fart... that being said, i don't care if golfers do or don't do it... personal decision on their part, and not something i'd nitpick at...

appears to be playing a LOT tougher... haven't seen any video, so not sure why... wind? just from following on the pgatour site, there are crooked numbers galore, and you had better not miss fairways... especially on 9... missing on 9 seems to lead to at least a bogey, and worse for some... edit: even from the fairway, 5 isn't guaranteed... that's one tough par 5 today...
also, looks like you can put it in reverse in a hurry... zach was standing on the 9th tee, 2 strokes off the lead playing a par 5... bang... double/bogey/bogey, 6 strokes back... ouch...

henrik on 52 watch... :-P

unless the player is absolutely positive that they heard "it's good", and others heard it as well, there is only ONE person "responsible" for the controversy, and that is the player that picked up the ball... regardless of where their opponents were standing/walking/taking a crap... suzann is getting a raw deal...

true dat, i really think many don't understand how good we have it now... back then, holes 16-18 only, and no coverage on weekdays... you would sit there through the entire coverage to watch the leader hit 6 shots... something that cannot be forgotten though... all the sportswriters were buddies with (most of) the players (same as in other sports), and even though they knew the dirt, they certainly didn't dish it...

i don't think it is as simple as that.... :) hardest course i ever played was the old sawgrass course right after they played the tpc (the contractor i worked for was a member)... i was around a 4 hc at the time, and i shot 92... and it was a GOOD 92... i think i could have played that course 100 times and never broken 85... i played the tpc course at sawgrass the year after it opened... that thing was a bitch... someone mentioned bethpage black... i have not played it since the usga "fixed it up" (and it needed fixing)... i do know that prior to the rehab, it was no bargain, as it was rather poorly maintained, and the combination of course difficulty and poor maintenance made for some tough conditions... one other that was right up there (and was rather humbling) was wachesaw east in myrtle right before a lpga event... i was around an 8 at the time, and i played as good as i could possibly play and still shot 91, the greens ate me alive... i then watched the ladies play it and make me look like i had never picked up a club before... :-P

yea, and followed it up with a crappy 63... i tell ya, that guy deserves to lose his card... :-P

Maybe the purest greens I have seen all year so far?

those greens are SO pure... just once, i'd like to putt on greens that good...
I've have played Conway Farms several times, the course is bent grass tee to green. The tee boxes putt better than many courses. It's a great course, looking forward to watching this weekend. Several years ago, I came really close to winning a new BMW, on the last par 3 if I would have made the ace.......... Club Rat
i am green with envy...

The Presidents Cup v The Ryder Cup - Which is best?
ccotenj replied to Golfbreaks's topic in Tour Talk
they don't even belong in a comparison... the president's cup is a slightly expanded (and less entertaining) version of the tavistock cup... let's put it this way... if they decided to hold the rc in a location that would require me to stay up all night in order to watch it, i would... i'd bitch about it, but i'd do it... whereas it is unlikely that i will even bother dvr'ing the pc this year... put another way... there are several of us who wouldn't mind if the pc went away entirely... there are none of us who want the rc to go away...
