  1. Sad news for sure...especially after he had been found and seemingly the worst was over. I've struggled with mental health issues most of my life, and recently have gotten to the point at times where suicide seemed like a viable solution, then I go and read about the process, and how it affects the survivors, and I snap out of it. There are no guarantees that suicide means the end of pain. The process itself can be extremely painful, even moreso if the attempt is unsuccessful. Then one has to live with the negative consequences the rest of their lives.
  2. Mickelson has become Tommy Armour the Third...seems all he wears these days on course is black and white.
  3. I know Jim Rome adores the guy, which means Elk has found the niche of good but not great sport figures, which is the level of sport figure Rome seems most apt to handle.
  4. I guess I didn't make myself entirely clear...I didn't mean Tiger per se as he has already established himself as a dominant figure. The OP was looking for someone other than Tiger to replace him. If there isn't a person, its no sweat off of the media's back...they'll find it in another sport if it materializes.
  5. i guess i'm not really following you. in the media's case, imo, the tail wags the dog, so if a golfer doesn't continue to be a dominant sportsman, the media will go elsewhere.
  6. and i would've gladly paid the $40 had, at the time, the ticket was available. but at the time i purchased the ticket, it wasn't, for some reason or another. generally i'm wary of using the secondary market to buy tickets, though I have used the service to sell tickets that I have paid for. again, this is another example of how the secondary market may have been used in a way it wasn't intended. the 'gouging' part, in my opinion, is suddenly charging 'reserved' for a ticket that was previously never reserved. i really don't think somebody was thinking, we have to find a way to make more money for charity in factoring in their decision. The reality is, with Tiger and Rory not playing the event this year, I'm sure ticket sales are not where they usually are for the tournament, they had to make it up somehow. And at least in Tiger's case, his availablity for future events is not as certain as it once was.
  7. well, it just so happens i was the recipient of a 'complimentary' ticket a few years ago from a co-worker who won their ticket through a raffle, they weren't interested in going, and they also weren't interested in receiving any money for it. believe me, they could've just as easily gave it away as sold it.
  8. That was the first that came to mind for me too. I've always thought, that I'd rather play a round of golf with Nicklaus, but I'd rather have a beer with Arnie.
  9. I went to StubHub, and yes, I agree, I got a great deal, but not as great a deal as the person who sold me the 'complementary' ticket. That was the point I was trying to make. Had I been said person, not to brag, but you wouldn't have seen it on StubHub.
  10. So I decide, after finding out I have opening day free for the WGC Bridgestone at Firestone CC in Akron, OH, that I would go ahead and purchase a ticket for said day. I go to the 'official' site, and find that general admission seats are unavailable at the time I am purchasing tickets, but there is a new feature this year where you can get an upgraded 'reserved' bleacher seat, with access to an exclusive club where you can buy exclusive food and drink, for $95. Well, basically what you are paying for is a seat that, in the past, was not, or never reserved, and a few minutes of air conditioning if it happens to be too hot. I took a pass. So, for the first time, I decided to check the secondary market and found an offer on StubHub for $29 and change. I took the offer. Yesterday I received the ticket in hand, and happened to see on the ticket, the word 'Complementary'. So whoever decided to sell the ticket made 100% pure profit, and stuck it to the person or group that decided to be generous. So the moral of the story is, you either get gouged legally by the 'creativity' of the people in charge of selling tickets on behalf of the venue and/or said sponsor, or illegally by the 'little man' who sees charity as an opportunity for free enterprise. See you at the Bridgestone!!!
  11. Guaranteed you would see Pat Perez as a captain's pick, and Darius Rucker as Asst. Captain. Bring it on boys, what do we have to lose !?!?
  12. I see only two kids, admist a sea of middle-aged people, and a lady that could be mistaken for tiger's mother. Some of these tweets just floor me.
  13. if anything I've learned, its not usually the instigator that gets punished, its the retaliator. Probably not fair, but true.
  14. I listened to the James Taylor concert on XM from New York, and people were screaming bababooey after every song. Taylor handled it excellently, but I'm sure you don't go to one of his concerts expecting that. Maybe, except in New York.
  15. so on that course, do they play lift, clean, and wipe?
  16. As the title of the thread says, this is the type of round i've been relegated to for about the last 5-7 years, my swing undergoing radical changes due to significant weight gain and a nagging chronic shoulder problem. I still manage to play about 10-12 rounds a year, and still manage to have a good swing thought pop in my head every round that keeps me coming back, though it becomes harder and harder to implement. The other day, because of some morning errands I had to run, I didn't get to the course until about high-noon. By then, I had a foursome, a twosome, and a single with his own one-person gallery right in front of me. The single let me tee off before him, relegating himself to the fact it was going to be a long day, even only for nine holes (it was a nine hole course). By the end of the first hole, I caught up to the twosome, who invited me to play with them, but warned me, they were pretty bad. I told them I was too. Now, in the distant past, I may have said that out of humility or to make them feel better, but this day, it was absolutely true. But we had a great time. Where I used to be nervous about hitting the perfect shot, I was now nervous about things like pace of play, etiquette, and fostering a sense of camraderie, even though we were perfect strangers. Whatever prejudices I had as they hit their opening tee shots dissolved as I was now part of 'the group'. There were some good shots to be had among the bad, reminiscences of the 'old days' as they actually believed that at one time I was a much better player than I am now. They didn't have the experience I had to fall back on as they both took on the game later in life, and admitted they weren't asked to play by the better players among their colleagues. I could certainly relate. You know who your true friends are, when your game goes south. And sometimes the friends you thought would stay true, don't. But I digress... It was an imperfect round, but a perfect day, not a cloud in the sky, bright sun, summer in the Midwest at its finest. And a round I couldn't think or dream up if I tried.
  17. but he could never win again and his world wouldn't change one iota, and neither would the world of the pga tour. when tiger took the golf world by storm, ratings and purses were much, much lower than they are today. a win for tiger was a win for the tour, because it brought more fans (and their dollars) into the sport. today, the tour can pretty much sustain itself without tiger having to dominate, even win. spieth's 22nd birthday was one of the lead stories on sportscenter...it was almost unheard of that golf outside of tiger was a leading story, let alone a story at all, years ago. it takes a lot of hard work to win. does tiger really want to put the time and effort in now, without the payoff he once enjoyed? he makes an infinite amount of mnoey off the course with nike, has his foundation, course design, other financial interests, and his kids. he can show up at a tournament if he needs a fix, because he knows the fan landscape will look the same as it did when he was king. imo, there is no reason whatsoever he needs to win. wants to...might be a different story, but we'll have to see.
  18. well he won't win at firestone because he hasn't qualified. and i'm not sure that even a win this week would get him in.
  19. He could reasonably never win again and play a reasonably full schedule on tour. He's assured himself lifetime status...if he thinks that snead's all-time wins record is important enough to break, I would say yes.
  20. i don't think you could single just one guy out and say he's the biggest jerk on tour...or because he was a jerk to you, he's a jerk in general. like anybody, they're probably the nicest to the people they know personally, and are nice to them in return. I would think especially on the field of play, they would have to be somewhat of a jerk in nature as a protective shield. golf is the only sport where you can literally participate within inches of the fans, which gives them the opportunity to harm them. pink, purple, and white pants and shirts have probably been suggested by the pros respective sports psychologists to be worn to have a calming effect on those who observe them, unless, of course, you are tiger who wears red because he has a massive security detail to have his back.
  21. tiger said the same thing two years ago when adam scott won. if tiger wants fast greens at augusta, he should petition them to hold the tournament in july.
  22. the report failed to mention his opening drive, which was 45 yards left and on the 9th hole, so it wasn't flawless. it was totally biased.
  23. Notah texted Tiger to confirm because he didn't believe Rosaforte's report. Only after Tiger told him so, did Notah believe it. Notah was a pro once too. 3-under in eleven holes in a practice round with O'Meara does not a tournament make. Mark will be nowhere near him when the tournament starts.
  24. on which ball? and was he playing o'meara for money? it was also reported he shot in the low-60s at Medalist with his 'worst ball', which even Notah Begay said was unbelieveable. whether i say it the way i said it, or in reverse, it still applies.
  25. monday that stunt with firing balls at two greens he wasn't getting very many close at all. And do you think the golf channel would dare show any of his chunky chips (or talk about them) this week, like they did so endlessly leading up to the tournament, when it was deemed news people wanted to see and hear about? the media has no loyalties, they do an about face when it serves their purpose.
