This reminded me of the President's Cup at Harding Park, I had a perfect view from the tee on a short par-4 dog leg left. I'm sure most know AK is known for playing a fade. When he gets up to the tee box, I bet my cousin $1 that his ball ends up in the trees to the right. Sure enough he hits the fade and ends up in jail on the right rough. Obviously the hole plays for a draw, he still went to his go to shot and I get a $1 in my pocket (actually we collect at $10 so I didn't actually see the dollar).

i received my burner 6 iron couple weeks ago, honestly it doesn't feel much different off the face than my r7, although it may carry another 5 yards or so

when you say staying connected, are you referring to the feeling of your left bicep in your chest and right elbow close to your body (for righty)? i've really been trying to work on this lately as i noticed on film i was pretty bad coming over the top. it has been working out pretty good, my irons are getting a lot straighter, except that now sometimes with my 4W and 3H i'm hitting some pretty bad hooks, when before i couldn't even hit a draw to save my life. that's the beauty of golf i guess

i love watching match play. stroke play your playing the course but match your playing the course and an opponent. there's nothing like the pressure on your opponent sticking it to 6 ft and then he comes back and puts it in kick in range and makes that 6 footer look 16. can't wait for the ryder cup!

I think he was sincere, and I agree with what he said that this matter is between a husband and a wife. Hopefully he just gets back to playing golf soon. I was hoping he would say he would be back by the Masters, but its still anyones guess. Even if some people have lost all respect for him, you can't deny that watching a big tourny is not the same without him.

What kind of practice drills or are some of you doing for short game? Are you just practicing getting up and down from different lies? practicing from different distances and getting distance control and feel down? chipping or pitching with different clubs or just wedges? I would like to start putting more time into practicing short game. Most of my time is spent on the range trying to groove a swing but I am improving and starting to realize the importance of the short game. I'm just not sure where to start. A few of the local munis have a pitching green, should I just spend a few hours a week trying to get up and down to start off? Thanks for any ideas

i'm 5'8 and it seems the only way i can hit my driver is if i flatten my swing way out. what i've noticed though is that i have lost distance and the swing might be too flat and cutting across the ball on the downswing. i play a big fade slice with it i can't for the life of me draw it..actually i can only draw my 7 iron and up..if clubs are too long, is it harder to come from in to out?

I'm going on Saturday. From what I know they are using SF State for parking, I think it was $20 on ticketmaster, my cousin purchased one. Get there as early as possible if you want a space, otherwise you could be walking from 19th and Judah. I can't wait, this will be my first pro event. Looking forward to seeing some of the best in the world live.

Cheap Scotty Cameron headcovers available?
grandaddy510 replied to Zeph's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
did this come with the pivot tool as well? it seems like in all the pics they don't show the other side of it and it doesn't say it comes with it. i'm assuming it's new in bag but wanted to see if you know. i need to replace my studio style stock one of my favorites so far is the bethpage black us open. the shark head is pretty slick, but i don't know about spending $250 on a head cover that sold for $72. i guess that club cameron has its benefits. that's a nice profit for how quickly those things go up once they're sold out -
looking forward to the Presidents Cup coming to SF this year...this would be my first PGA event...not sure what day to get tickets for though, i think four-ball would be the most bang for the buck so it's looking like friday would be the day, although for $20 more Sat sounds like it would be fun to watch with four-ball and alternate shot in there, just have to deal with the crowds on the weekend...hmmm decisions decisions is the atmosphere anywhere near the level of a ryder cup at the presidents?

i recently picked up the studio style in almost new condition and it is night and day from the taylormade rossa modena i was using. the roll is really amazing how it comes off the head when you hit it true, the swing weight makes it feel like you just can't put a bad stroke on it...and of course the confidence factor i don't know it seems like those 15-20 footers are starting to drop more and more. i told myself i wouldn't buy a scotty till i was any good, i've only been playin for a little over a year, but from what i've read if you're going to invest into any club in the bag, you should spend it on a putter...and i found a good deal on it from someone local so i pulled the trigger.

ya i'm not good enough to give you advice but did you say the ball backs up with your drives and long chips too?
-
it really doesn't matter to me if its just a casual round, although i do think its funny when someone wants a 3 footer, i'll pick it up if its inside 1 ft. unless its for bird i'll putt it...i mean if its for a snow man and theres people on our backs they can pick up a 5 footer all day. but i occasionally play with someone whos like that, quick to give you a 2-3ft and wants them back in return, shaves his penalty strokes, or the topped drive, hits into the trees, pitches out, misses the green, chips on and 3 putts for a double...lol...we just let him have his fun he only makes the weekend foursome if someone can't go and i would never play him for money...he's the one that everytime he plays by himself he shoots low 90's but when you play with him he never busts a c note but if we're playin skins in our regular foursome nobody likes to give anything lol

Just wondering if any of your home courses or stories from your local area have been featured on "Golf In America". I was surprised to see one of the local munis Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, CA featured on the show, about the programs and classes they have getting the inner city youth involved in the game and industry. I thought this was pretty cool as golf really isn't a sport that inner city youth is exposed to, be it financial reasons or whatever. I think it shows how far the sport has come. Any stories from your area make the show? Any thoughts on the program they have going for the youth in Oakland?

how much do you pay for a bucket of balls at the driving range
grandaddy510 replied to aca247's topic in Golf Talk
$9 for a large 99, $7 for medium 66, $4 small 33 at my home course but i get them for free. benefits of knowing the manager. too bad its not grass or i'd be there every night -
read a book on the short game. this has helped me a ton, dropped 5 strokes within a month of reading and practicing, and with more practice another 5 strokes doesn't look too far away. i picked up stan utely's art of the short game. very simple and straight forward method. also i think dave pellz short game bible is another good approach to the short game from what i've heard haven't checked it out though.

Does taking time off make sense?
grandaddy510 replied to Chilidipper's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
why take time off? i'm still pretty new myself, i get pissed when i shoot 51-52, but it pushes me to shoot for 47-48 on the back. all the thin/fat/hooks/slices/chillidip/sculled shots just make me want to go out again and try harder/smarter next time. instead of taking the time off, why not spend time practicing? time off will not correct the issue imo. recently, i know i've been getting more consistent overall, i get free range balls at the local range so i'm out there at least 3 times a week. but my short game was making me feel just like you are feeling about your game. i picked up stan utleys short game book, and started practicing. now on the course i look forward to missing a green (although i'd rather get a GIR of course) because i've practiced getting up and down. i still need a lot of work but i've dropped about 5 strokes off im usually mid 90's. i've started to work on my putting and speed control lately too, it's been raining lately here but i think with a little more work on the putting i should be able to break 90 soon here. my point/advice from someone around your same level, instead of taking time off, spend that time practicing whatever you think you need work on to break that 90. you won't be able to avoid things you're bad at on the course imo, because if you're bad at it eventually it's going to get you in that situation, so why not practice it and be prepared for it. maybe take time off from playing for a few weeks, but during that time you can improve on your game by practicing and could put you in position to break that next barrier next time out. also like mentioned above, read about golf. i've read a few instructional books or magazine articles and started practicing them that night to put into my game. also watch instructional videos on youtube, videojug, ect. it helps alot. -
yea it's a little confusing as far as the technical stuff. and i kinda worded it wrong but from what i understand he talks about on a "chip" shot the leading edge of the club (forward press) is digging in the turf after ball first contact (hitting down), where as on his "pitch"/sand shot you are using the bounce to slide the club on the turf/sand and get the ball in the air using the loft of the club and the help of the cupped left wrist/right palm facing up. almost seems like trying to pick it since there is no divot, just scuff from the bounce. like i said i could be confused, and he could have done a better job on explaining it in a little more detail, but this book has helped me a ton. only played 2 rounds since reading this, but have worked quite a few nights at the range on it. the short game shanks and skulls seem to be gone, hopefully this will get me down to the mid-high 80's soon here.
-
this book is amazing. i didn't think the short game could be so simple. one thing i'm not sure about that he doesn't fully explain is how much bounce is needed to effectively make good contact and have the club slide on the sand/turf. i know he uses 12* but is there a min/max with his technique. my SW only had 8* bounce so i just purchased a new 52* and 56* with 10* and 14* respectively. will the 14* help me even more or cause more trouble? i would think if there's too much bounce the club would skip off the turf and cause you to skull it unless you're hitting down on it instead of trying to pitch it.
-
been playing for about 6 months, i try to get out almost every weekend, and going to the range about 3 times a week, just shot a 98 the other day with a few stupid shots i wish i had back...i think i can get to low 90's high 80's pretty soon here.
-
im still pretty new to the game, trying to grove my swing right now so i have quite a few things going thru my head. my main thoughts where i'm at right now though would be eyes down/watch impact left arm locked @ impact inside/out release for the draw (don't slice!!) i just make so much better contact with the ball when i have these 3 things in my head
-
there's a couple things thats not realistic in tiger woods, spin control while the ball is in the air, and the put preview on the newer ones, other than that i'd say its pretty close to sim...i would agree that links is pretty realistic as well, but to me the feathering of the anaolg stick gives me more feel of a swing than a mouse move back and through, just my opinion though. i really like how if you start the backswing with the analog on the inside to out you hit a draw, and on the outside to in you hit a cut, just like i do with my real swing. oh yea and i used to love playing world class leaderboard on the old commodore 64. i wish i still had that thing

Am I in the minority? I still CARRY my clubs
grandaddy510 replied to jewestcoast's topic in Golf Talk
one of the bennifits from walking i have noticed, and i'm sure it's all mental, but it helps me hit the ball straighter. if i'm riding in a cart, i tend to play more army golf, but when walking it kinda forces me to make solid contact and hit em straighter so i don't make a 6300 yard course 7500 yards. i guess its similar to those who find a better rythem when walking. but yea, i'd rather walk and carry rather than ride, unless its over 90*, and i can't see myself using a pull cart. i'm 26 and i guess i just have it in my head that those are geared towards women and seniors. -
i've been playing the tiger woods series since 99, way before i even thought of picking up some sticks...and to me it never gets old...every year it is upgraded with new courses, new pro's, and new clubs/gear...out of all the golf games i've played (there really isn't many, good ones at least) it is by far the most realistic.
