You might want to hit another
-
I am in no way condoning taking clubs that you find on the course. But you shouldn't leave them in the first place
-
I get your point even if no one else does, if you leave a club and it doesn't get returned let that be a lesson to you to take steps so that you don't leave a club behind instead of wasting time thinking about some mysterious "thief" that you want to confront. It is your fault that you left the club.

Closest Call/ Worst thing you've hit with a golf ball?
mad max replied to MacGregor9's topic in Golf Talk
My local coarse has the dining room set up so they overlook the the 18th fairway I think they did this to help lure PGA events for a special V.I.P. section, so one time I hit my approach and hit the windows on a fly and it was rather embarrassing to go right up next to the glass in front of people having lunch after finishing thier round and hit my next shot. Luckily I hit it about 5' from the pin so I didn't look like a total hack. -
Closest Call/ Worst thing you've hit with a golf ball?

When I had just purchased my first 60* I tried to use it from about 40 yards. I ended up sculling the ball with almost a full swing. I was playing with my mother at the time and she was watching me from the other side of the green. The ball went over the green and bounced at least 3 times and at least two of which were on the cart path, the ball hit my mother right between the eyes. She was wearing a pair of large designer sunglasses and the ball hit them at the bridge of the nose. Luckily she was completely unhurt. After I hit the shot I thought the ball is heading right toward you, move you idiot! Thank goodness she didn't, if she had turned her head at the last second the ball would have hit her in the side of the head right around the temple. I guess being a deer in headlights works out sometimes. That club got me back about a week later, I was with my uncle around the chipping area and he wanted to try the 60*,this was about 1999 so 60*'s were somewhat unusual. I after I hit my shots I said sure and went to get my balls than he than did the same thing as I did except he must of hit it off the toe as well and hit me in the small of the back from about 30 feet it hurt quite a bit but the resulting bruise made me realize how lucky I had been when I hit my mother. -
Sorry my mistake. When I saw "paired with" I thought of my own experiences at my local San Francisco Bay area public courses. Where you never know what you are going to get. I didn't think of semi private courses where the members have the ability to play at different times than the general public. Again I apologize and know that you have explained it it makes perfect sense.
-
I know what you mean, just to clarify I give someone ample time to fix it.
-
I could see if he said his usual foursome but he said people he gets paired with. I know I have been paired with people that forget or don't bother to fix their marks and if I notice I will repair it for them and take my time doing it and that usually fixes the problem, but to make a blanket statement that you have never played with someone on your home course that not only fixes their mark but fixes another strikes me as not true and exaggerating to make a point. When I see something like this it makes me take everything that person says with a grain of salt. I know I have forgotten or not been able to find my mark before as I am sure almost everyone else here has as well.
-
I don't understand. If everyone at your course fixes their ball mark plus another where are all these unfixed marks coming from? I agree with the theory but when you make a statement that cannot possibly be true it takes away from your post.

So do you gave a ping g20 for sale? -
I don't think it was what he did as a young athlete was that annoying but the fact that as a 35-40 year old man he chose to tell several stories about his conquests to a group of strangers he had just met and had known for little over an hour was the part that made him look like a tool. Also the emphasis on married women made it seem like he enjoyed making others look foolish.

I would have thought it would be hard to find the ball as well but both times I have played night golf with three other golfers in a nine hole scramble format I think my foursome has only lost a total of 3 balls and two of those were visible but under water and the third was hit so deep in a hazard that it would have been impossible to find in the middle of the day. I found that you could see the ball much easier than during a normal round. We also played from the forward tee's because the course discouraged the use of drivers due to possible damage to the club.

First off I must say I love night golf. I have done it twice. If you want to do your best definitely bring a flashlight but if it is just for fun I would recommend not using a light. I have done it both ways and while it is easier to read greens and hit the ball constantly with a flashlight it is awesome to let your vision get accustomed to the darkness and you see these glowing lighted balls flying around all over the course from other groups, (you can see a lighted ball from much farther away than regular ball) I feel like I am playing on the moon or something. If you do decide to use a flashlight I would recommend not shining the light directly on the ball but just giving a little ambient light on the ball when hitting. I would also recommend not using a club with a black or dark finish especially if you are playing without a light. I tried a few shots with a Cleveland 60* with a gun metal finish and I could barley make contact with the ball because I could not see the club head. What kind of balls will you be using? I have seen two types, one has a glow stick for light and one has a battery powered light that goes on for about 10 min. after it is struck. The course I have played night golf on before said some people had broken their drivers when using the glow stick variety, so if damage to your driver would ruin the evening for you I would recommend bringing an older driver or using a hybrid or iron off the tee. Also when if you are using the glow stick type before you hit the ball you want to make sure hole where the glow stick goes in is orientated sideways to your intended target otherwise the spin of the ball could cause the light to fly out. If you are playing a course you are unfamiliar with it helps tons to play a practice round, if you are real serious use a ball that doesn't spin much. If you get to the course early you could ask if you could practice chipping and putting with the ball you will be using to get a feel of how the ball performs. A gps also helps a lot to find yardages. I found both ball types shorter than my usual bal on full shotsl by about 1 club or about 10 to 12 yard One last tip is don't have too much to drink when you play, it is easy to twist an ankle when walking around a golf course in the middle of the night and have fun.

Need recommendation for a 14th club.
mad max replied to erock9174's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I used to be in the same boat as you constantly trying to find that 14th club, but after wasting a considerable amount of money I still haven't found a club that helps me score lower on the golf course. I have found clubs that produce different results than my current clubs but the results are so inconsistent that they wind up costing me strokes. You seem to have your yardage gaps well dialed in so I wouldn't change your current set. We both have similar HC and I find if I need to hit a shot over 200 yards I probably shouldn't hit the shot and I don't think that you would gain much distance with a 3W over your 5W judging by your driver distance. Is their a particular distance, lie, or shot you have difficulty with? I know for me I don't like shots inside 80 yards from a tight but muddy lie so I might consider adding a 60* with higher bounce than my current 60. I know if I make a decent swing it really shouldn't matter but I have much more confidence and better results with my higher bounce 56* so I might try it and probably waste $100 on a club that ends costing me strokes. If you have a lot confidence in your 5W you could try and add a similar 7W that might go a similar distance as your 4i but with a different ball flight and it might be useful for downhill lies or shots to elevated greens. That being said I think that having 12 or 13 clubs that you have confidence in is better than having 14 with 1 or 2 clubs that you only use when playing poorly or just because you paid for them and you want to use them. -
PGA Tour Putts Gained/Make Percentage Stats
mad max replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
It certainly isn't based on me. My putting is about half as good, (my percentages for 5 feet are similar the the PGA's percentages for 10 feet.) -
I don't think this is a just way of determining whether the player is entitled to relief. 9 times out of 10 I think I would hit off a cart path rather than take an unplayable lie but I might not use the same club or use the same swing as I might if I was not on the cart path and I am nowhere near as skilled as you or Charl.

I am glad the old guy broke the car. I think that a car like that could cause substantial damage to the greens with its tires. If they didn't break the car I could see those kids doing that 10 or 15 times in one day. In that case I could see that green covered in tire ruts that would take weeks to heal. When the kid misses the ball the first time you see the car reverse rapidly and I will guarantee that that maneuver caused damage to the green. It looked like a gas car and if it was leaking fuel it would leave a line of dead grass where ever it went. I would not advocate swinging a club at anyone though, but it didn't look like he was real close to the kid.

I think you had a third option, you could have decided to make sure you were going to end up short even though you didn't think it was the best option for you to score well. I think you should be commended for thinking about the group behind you but if you were so concerned with them you could have thought that your punishment for an errant drive was that you would have 100+ yard approach shot. I know I am not at the same skill level as you but there are times when it would be advantageous for me to play up the wrong fairway after an errant drive, but I won't do it if it will severely impact the group I am playing with or the group that is coming down the other fairway. I don't have a regular foursome so I play with many different people and I find that the manners of the people I play with has about the same or more impact on my enjoyment of the round as how well I played.

For those of you that haven't seen it here it is.

Ugliest and most expensive putter from Scotty Cameron
mad max replied to homerun79's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Some people would buy a turd if it had Scotty Cameron's name on it. -
That is fine but make sure no one is behind you when you do this. I can be very annoying when the group in front of you putts out and then doesn't vacate the green in a timely manner even if their is no place to go. If you can it is advisable to join up with another group when the course is slow. I will probably get ripped for this but sometimes I have played in a 5 some if the course is backed up and a 2 some and a 3 some are both waiting on the same tee or a single catches up.

I think golfers and men in general look much more dignified and profesional in long pants. Not to say you shouldn't do what you want but if I am playing a special course I will always go with long pants.
-
I agree, take your medicine and if your ball rolls of the front it should be a reasonable chip and a putt from there. What you don't want is to have to try this shot twice in a row.
