I have started to capture "quality drives, greens in regulation and putts" and was curious to see if anybody had any ideas of how my numbers look compared to others with similar playing ability. I am an "in the 80's" golfer with the last 3 rounds being 88,85,85 on a course that I know pretty well. Today's round here are the stats Par 70 (36/34) Score 85 (47/38) 30 putts (1 3 putt and 1 chip in from off the green) 8/13 quality drives 6/18 G.I.R. 3 penalty strokes Thoughts?

I have been diagnosed with tennis elbow and have to wear a brace when playing golf. Can anybody recommend one? I am currently wearing an Ace brand with a strap that goes over the affected tendon. It works great, but given that I have to wear it every day, I want to get an extra or two so that I can rotate them and allow it to air out. Does anybody have a recommendation? Here is what I am wearing now.. http://www.amazon.com/ACE-Elbow-Strap/dp/B006BV08P4/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie;=UTF8&qid;=1407169183&sr;=1-1&keywords;=ace+elbow+strap

Why don't you change out your avatar?

i post on lots of different forums, and found that Mario has probably done pretty much EVERYTHING at some point in his video game existence, and it's an image that scales well and is instantly identifiable. Lastly - nothing that Mario does is something you would ever take very seriously - and I kinda prefer that people thought about me that way (don't take me too seriously...) -
Do you know why you hit the ball high? Is it because you put alot of backspin on the ball or because you have alot of positive loft at impact? I ask because the Nike is nice because you can turn it all the way down to 8.5 deg. It is also a VERY low spin club head so it will keep the ball down. Just to give you an idea, I have the regular Nike Covert and my other driver is a Cleveland DST300. The DST300 is a 9 deg with a light weight shaft and I hit the ball to what feels like the clouds. The nike which is set at 10.5 keeps the ball MUCH lower because it puts alot less spin on the ball. The downside of less backspin is that the ball doesn't always go as straight with the Nike because the side spin is more prevalent. My suggestion is to get fitted, don't just buy a driver based on what we have to say here. If you can't get fitted, than it would be helpful if you could give us as much information about your ball flight as possible.

I have the adjustable Nike Covert. Honestly, a good swing is playable regardless of the face position (open, neutral or closed) and a bad swing is in the trees regardless of face position. I firmly believe that the difference between open and closed on that club is probably like 7 yards in either direction. If you were a slicer before, you likely didn't have a club that had an open face, so chances are that you still have to have a healthy swing to get healthy results.

any plans for those of us that stand on the other side of the ball?

I have G25's as well. Distance wise, I am far enough. I don't know if I would hit something else further because I decided based on feel, and then had the opportunity to go to Ping directly in Phoenix to get fit. Ping's fitting process is also (IMHO) superior to most of the other brands fitting systems. Also, being left handed I was grateful to report that everything that Ping makes, they also make in left handed. Unlike Mizuno where somebody said, try the JPX825 pros they are great (except not avail in LH) Finally, Ping holds its value better than other brands, since all new irons are around the same price, I figured I should get the brand that would reduce the hit the most next time I go to buy new irons. So far, no complaints.

Thank you - I don't think that I have a swing speed problem. On my last round, I was averaging probably 235~240 with several over 260 and one at 274. So distance is not an issue. As for the loft, that is the weird part. The Cleveland is a 9 degree, and the Nike is set at 10.5. I think that the Nike has a little bit stiffer shaft (Kuro Kage 50g vs. the Cleveland made for - Diamana red 44g. The other thing is that, I have used both clubs enough to learn that the cleveland is better off the instep of my front foot, and teed up a little higher (1/2 the ball above the grounded club) than the Nike which is better off the inside portion of my heel and teed up (1/3rd or a little lower above the grounded club head) So the AoA might be higher since I am hitting it more on the upswing. My driver swing speed is on a driver is 95~100mph with the best results when I swing around 95~97. Again, as the weather gets colder, this is golf's version of bench racing (in between checking SWA.com for bing rates to florida to go play for a weekend)

At the beginning of the year I purchased a replacement driver (Nike Covert with the factory Stiff shaft) to replace my ~3 year old Cleveland DST300 driver. On the range and in the simulator, the Nike driver went straighter, and had a lower more penetrating ball flight. However, in actual play the cleveland just played better. The problem is that the ball would go WAY up in the air would go further, but then would just fall straight out of the sky. I think that alot of this is regarding the amount of backspin produced by the club. Also, the Nike is much more sensitive. My miss is an out to in swing that causes a slice with the nike, but a high "strong fade" with the Cleveland. The Cleveland has the stock Mitsubishi White 44g shaft. The Nike has the stock Kuro Kage silver shaft. Is the shaft or head causing the additional backspin? I don't know that I am ready to make another investment in a new club. My driver isn't holding me back right now, my short game is a larger problem. The purpose of this conversation is mostly just for the sake of conversation. Since they are calling for possible snow flurries this week, I get to spend the next several months talking about golf instead of playing it :(

Do me a favor, if you get your license and decide to practice medicine in Chicago, can you please tell me where so I know to get treated somewhere else?

as long as the grounds are clean, I don't much need flowers / bushes / etc. I would prefer not to have gravel parking lots, blacktop / concrete that is soo old it might as well be gravel. As for the clubhouse, the biggest offense that I have with clubhouses is if it isn't clean smelling. poor plumbing / OLD carpet / furniture / smell of smoke / etc. are all turn offs for me. like GolfingDad said, a well maintained course will extend into the clubhouse / parking lot in the same way that somebody who takes pride in their home will extend that pride to the driveway / yard.

Jeff, In my experience there are 2 kinds of simulators at Golf stores. The first is the dopler radar based. It is a small unit that sits on the ground next to the ball. Those are generally very accurate and usually have given me carry results that are on par with what I have found at the golf course. Those monitors usually use a pretty accurate measurement regarding side spin and as a result are fairly accurate to represent ball flight. The other kind, which uses cameras above the head or two laser fields that the ball passes through before hitting the screen generally don't have the ability to pick up the side spin on the ball, so they have to make alot more assumptions for ball flight. The assumptions programmed into the machine are usually best case. I once saw a guy program the thing with a down hill slope and a tail wind. This of course makes it look like the ball is going to travel further. Now he would also tell me, bring in your old club before buying a new one to compare. So to answer your question, it is likely that the simulator you were using doesn't take side spin into effect (which is the cause of a slice) If you were pushing the ball (starts right of the target and goes on a straight line) that "should" have been taken into effect. The web page that I recommend you read is this one. http://thesandtrap.com/b/playing_tips/ball_flight_laws It is a GREAT article written by Iacas that describes what causes a ball to do what when it is flying through the air. Cheers Chris

Is your handicap accurate (30)? It is likely a swing fault. The Dunlop might have masked it somehow. A slice is a result of an out to in swing path (casting, coming over the top, etc) In my swing I have found multiple causes and it took a long time to finally get it straightened out, and while I don't have it fixed all the time, I am finally moving in the right direction. Equipment will help to tune / refine your game, but a nasty slice (the kind that ends up across the NEXT fairway) isn't going to be fixed by equipment. You might find something that does a good enough job masking it that that game is still fun, but an over the top motion is likely robbing you of power and causing you to expel energy on creating excessive side spin on the ball instead of putting that energy into directing the ball further down the fairway. As for the simulator, others have said it, Simulators are designed to sell you golf clubs and the best way to sell somebody a new "thing" is make that person believe it is better than his old "thing".

George Dunne is managed by Billy Casper Golf but owned by Cook county (the same county that the city of Chicago resides in) Highland woods which is close to Schaumburg is also a nice course, and they often run deals for under $30 Monday-Friday 12pm to 2pm. It is a nice course, not very difficult, some fun holes. They also allow walking.
-
When exactly will you be in town?
-
I live not far from Schaumburg so I know a fair amount about the golf in the area. I played Fox run earlier this year, and its nice, but nothing special. Schaumburg Golf course is probably nicer. Bensinville has White Pines which is one of the more popular public tracks. It totally depends on your price. Seven Bridges in Wood ridge (about 20-30 minutes from you) is very nice. Bridges of Poplar Creek (very close) is a fun course with lots of water, very short par 71 or 72. Are you planning a week day round / weekend round? How much do you want to spend? Harborside is on the south side of chicago, probably 60-75 minutes from Schaumburg. Cantigny has amazing grounds, a friend got married there last year, we have never played but it was very pretty to look at. Cog Hill on that list is simply amazing, and they have 3 other courses that are also very nice. You will still have good weather in October but you might need to plan for cool mornings / early evenings. If I am available, I would likely be willing to join you for a round (depending on which course and how expensive it is)

I got an email from here this morning in my inbox with a few of the recent articles, however at the bottom of it, it had a link to swing smart, which appears to be another gyro device that blue tooth's (is that a verb?) to your tablet/smart phone similar to swingbyte. Up to this point, I didn't think that TST had backed a specific one, are they now backing this newest one? What are peoples thoughts on Swing Smart? Has anybody used one?
-
enjoy the course. I will be out of town visiting friends in Michigan that weekend. I have never played it but heard good things.
-
My normal group that I play with have a few "pace of play" rules that we play by. One of them is that double par is the max you can take on a given hole. By that logic, 144 is the max you can shoot on most golf courses (Par 72*2) so I would have to agree, if I played a course that forced me to NOT finish more holes that I finished, I would choose to play easier courses next time.

Damn, I was really hoping you were going to finish with... As soon as they left, I went over and took the rest of his unhit range balls. -

I have played golf in Jamaica. The 3rd hole had a cow on it, and the 5th hole had a lateral hazard due to farming (pot).
