He's not saying hit balls with the thumb like that... just swing the club. I guess the idea would be to weaken the right hand to feel more of the left hand and side. That's what he's saying. Of course, I've never given a golf tip on what appears to be live TV so it's hard to criticize but I had no idea what problem he was trying to help. Not getting to the left side? Then he started to get into a lot of other stuff so it was just confusing. Then again... live TV tends to turn people into blabbering idiots... so I'm cutting the guy some slack. Here's the script I would have written for him... "want a better way to feel what the left hand should be doing in the golf swing? try this tip... move your thumb like this which really weakens your right hand. Now, don't try to hit an actual golf ball like this because you'll likely end up with a broken thumb. Just take some gentle swings and feel the weight of the club and what the left hand needs to do to keep it from flipping." Or better yet, take some swings with just your left hand on the club. The end. I'm not saying any of the above is correct doctrine... just saying from a production point of view he needed to make it slower (he was talking kind of fast because he was nervous), simple and with less jargon. Just for fun we should all do a video giving a golf tip and critique it... maybe give an award for the best one? funniest one? most ridiculous one?

PING Eye 2s Are the Best Irons Ever Created
todgot replied to famousdavis's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
PING clubs are one of those things people like to argue about. Apple vs. Windows, Bose vs. any other brand... it's one of those things. I've never owned a set of PINGS but I've always thought they were cool. -
I see your point but, depending on the situation, it's a little unrealistic. The league I play in has 24 teams in 2 divisions... one division plays the front nine while the other plays the back and then they switch 9's every other week. If you play through my group you aren't going anywhere... then in 1 or 2 holes I will be waiting on you. Nothing is more aggravating then letting a group play through and then having to wait for them. How may people are in your group? Are you a single? There are also other factors to consider.... the format we're playing changes every week... best 2 balls net, best 2 balls gross, 4 balls net or gross, chapman, shamble, Red, white and blue, etc. Some formats might slow play down... or speed it up. To me it's kinda like playing behind a Charity Scramble and complaining they're playing too slow and won't let you play through. It's golf but a special circumstance... for that block of time they own the course. I would fault the course management for not making it abundantly clear the situation before giving you a tee time.

August 11: spend 10 to 15 minutes working with the orange whip. Most of the day was spent at the firing range so I spent time working on my stance and set up.- 188 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge August 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
No worries... thanks. August 10th: Took some slow swings with my 8 iron in the garage. concentrating on my back swing and getting into a proper position to trigger a good downswing. My problem is often coming dropping too far inside and getting stuck. Finished with some fast swings with the Speed Stick. Going to Tacoma for 3 days for the Army... hoping to be able to continue to post some practice. taking the Orange Whip.- 188 replies

Thanks! I did ask for it on the appropriate thread but you never responded. I also shot 79 in a tournament over the weekend. It was a Par 70 so not sure if that counts. First sub 80 round of the year.- 188 replies

August 8th: Taking a little break from Golf the last couple days and getting caught up in the office. Worked for 5 minutes today with the Impact Snap. Tonight took some easy swings with the Orange Whip and just felt the weight swing. Usually on Tuesdays I go to the course after work... not today.- 188 replies

I think there is "conventional wisdom" in every aspect of life which is often proved wrong but continues to be perpetuated. That's what Freakenomics is about and also the book "The Signal and the Noise". It takes a long time for conventional wisdom to change so just be satisfied you're an early adopter. I remember a line from somewhere... If the legend is better than the truth... print the legend.

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge August 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
August 7: recuperating from 54 holes over the weekend. 10 minutes of easy swings with the Orange Whip just feeling the weight and stretching my back muscles. Followed by a 20 to 30 pitches in my back yard with a 58 degree wedge. Thinking about re-reading Bob Rotella's "Golf is not a Game of Perfect". Also need to re-read LSW and get the putting drills started. Bought a metal yard stick for practice at home.- 188 replies

I agree and the truth is the 79 did not feel as good as the 96 felt bad. Even in the 2nd round I would walk off a green after having made par on a hole by wishing in a 3 or 4 foot putt and I would not feel great... even though I hit a great drive and a great second shot. Imagine Ernie Els at Augusta... it was that bad. I had to admit last year I had the chipping yips but never had this issue with putting until last week. I've never felt that bad on a golf course and I'm still a little down. I'm not new to tournament golf... I try to play at least 3 local amateur tournaments a year and would play more if I could but this is the first time anything like that has ever happened and it was a shock to the system. But thanks... I do need to focus on the positive. I didn't give up...

I played in a 54 hole local amateur event which is part of the areas "NW Golf Tour". A series of 2 or 3 day events which draw pretty good fields. I came in with a 9.7 handicap which put me in the 2nd Flight (7-10) with a 10 handicap. I was struggling with putting yips for the week prior and they came back with a vengeance on Day one. I lost track of how many three putts I had and 4 putted a par 3. I ended the first day with a 96... 48/48 and one of the worst days on the course ever. It really sucks to be standing over a 3 foot putt and know it has no chance of going in the hole... unless by luck. I was very discouraged. But, I went to the putting green after the round and hit putt after putt with no yip. So, now I know I'm a head case. I show up the second day determined to do better and my yippy stroke was able to actually make some putts. I shot 79 the second day which was my first 70's round of the year. Day 3: The yips returned but after shooting 45 on the front I switched back to a conventional grip and shot 38 on the back with a birdie. The yips disappeared when there was no more pressure. final round was a 83. One positive from the round was a KP on a 157 yd par 3... 1 foot 5 inches from the cup. Which led to my lone birdie of the tournament. Not sure if my tournament days are over as I don't think I have the nerves for it. I'm at a cross roads.

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge August 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
August 6: day 3 of the Wandermere amateur. My ball striking was not as sharp today and I started with yipping again. I had a bad front 9 and made the turn at 10 over but played the back in 3 over 38... total was 83 on the par 70 track. Spent some time after talking to my cousin-in-law about my goals in golf and I'm at a crossroad. My ball striking was pretty good this week but it's hard to play competitive golf when you can't make anything over 2 feet. Later in the day I putted much better and went back to a conventional grip... more later.- 188 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge August 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
August 5th: played day 2 of a local amateur tournament. Yesterday was one of my worst days on a golf course ever as I yipped my way to a 96. (Par 70). So today had to be better and it was... I still struggled with the yips but was able to shoot a 79. Most likely first off in my flight tomorrow as the leader shot 72-72 with a 7 handicap. My goal tomorrow is to just have fun, keep a positive attitude and do my best.- 188 replies

August 4: played 18 holes in a local amateur tournament. Results were too horrible to talk about right now. In the last week I've developed full on putting yips. I'm completely out of the tournament so the next two days are about seeing if I can even play.- 188 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge August 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
August 3rd: played 9 hole match play in our league playoffs. I won my match 7 1/2-3 1/2 but my team lost 21-19. I played well overall and only missed 1 green due to a severe downhill side hill lie on my approach. I was 3 over par mainly due to two 3-putts. I was a little better later in the round and made a couple 4 footers for par. Tournament the next three days.- 188 replies

I played in a Scramble once and won closest to the pin... a checkers set from Wal-Mart and a pack of Pinochle cards. Let's just say I was disappointed. A couple of years ago I was playing in a Scramble with my wife and another couple who are semi-nongolfers. It was for a local Autism charity and my wife is on the board. There was every conceivable game involved including: mulligan's, kick one, throw one, launch a ball from a sling shot... ect. I'm shepherding this group around and trying to "win" and my wife says, "you're taking this way too seriously and being kind of a dick". So I took off my shorts and played 3 holes in my Puma Boxer Briefs (pulled way up Herkle style) and my shirt tucked in. First, it readjusted my attitude and made me a lot more relaxed. Second, It was very comfortable and I really enjoyed the air flow. In the end, we ended up "winning" $150... which was promptly donated back to the charity.

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge July 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm so bummed. I posted 30 of the 31 one days and forgot 7/31. I returned from a 4 day golf trip to Kokanee Springs in BC, Canada and took the kids to Silverwood, a local amusement park. I fully intended to do my 5 minutes of practice but completely forgot until this morning. Back to the drawing board and I will try again this month. Local Amateur tournament this weekend... 54 holes.- 220 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge July 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
July 30th: 18 holes today at Balfour in BC Canada. I wrote the post from yesterday last night but did not click submit. Todays round had the potential to be one of the best rounds of my life but 2 bad swings led to disaster. I was 2 over par starting the 16th hole which is 157 yd down hill par 3 with water on the right. There was wind into us and I tried to hit a 9 iron but came out of it and hit it in the water. I took a drop and chunked my 3rd shot back in the same pond. Finally took a 7 on the hole. I then proceeded to double the next hole after snap hooking a 3 hybrid into another hazard. Ended with a bogey on 18 to go 7 over for my last 3 holes and shoot an 80. For the entire day I had one bunker shot and I putted from off the green once. I hit every other green in regulation except 16 and 17. I have to admit I lost focus on 16 which cost me. I also struggled with the putter but had 2 birdies. After the round we drove home and I spent over an hour on the practice green working on my putting. Hate to say I had the yips all day and my stroke was very stabby.- 220 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge July 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
July 29th: 36 holes at Kokanee springs in BC Canada. Finally, on the 3rd day in Canada I learned my lesson and left my driver in the bag. Result was a respectable 81 with 2 birdies and I missed 2 birdie putts within 5 feet. I finally seem to be getting my game back after a few day hiatus. Hit some nice shots but also some stinkers. I got a triple bogey on the first hole everyday and today was no exception. Anyway, 18 tomorrow and the home to Spokane.- 220 replies

July 28: okay, my game has completely collapsed. Played 36 holes today and probably shot around 100 the first 18. Not sure and afraid to ask. I lost my match 3 and 2 and the guy I was playing probably hit 5 shanks. Horrible. 36 more holes tomorrow.- 220 replies

July 27: played 27 holes at Kokanee Springs in Canada. Tough day.., didn't sleep much then drove 5 hours in the car. Got here and hit a few balls before going out. It seems as though my golf game doesn't have a passport because I left it in the US. Also left in the US was my 8 iron which I apparently left on the driving range Tuesday night. Anyway... first 9 holes I shot 51. We'll see how tomorrow goes.- 220 replies

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge July 2017
todgot replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
July 26: Busy day at work trying to tie up all the loose ends before leaving on my 4 day golf trip to Kokanee in B.C. Took time during packing to work on shoulder turn and moving my tailbone toward the target on the back swing. Hit 30 pitches and chips in the back yard. Worked with the orange whip for a few minutes also. Hopefully I can post from Canada.- 220 replies
