I found these videos of Sean giving a lecture at the Professional Golfers Career College in Orlando and I upped them to youtube. Just wanted to share. http://www.youtube.com/user/spmurph

Mangum says that you never want to miss past the hole (or low for that matter). Also, he wants you to have one constant speed and base your reads off that speed. Makes sense, since if you know the speed you will be able to better read the break.

+1 on Geoff Mangum. He has some youtube videos too. I tried with utley, read the book like five times, bought the putting arc. Never really noticed a difference until I was turned on to Mangum. Whereas I found Utley to be too vague, Mangum may come across as the opposite at times. As he puts it, he takes simple concepts and makes them complex (or something like that).

Michael Jacobs in Manorville (Long Island). He's a top-notch instructor. I'll pm you a link since I don't know if posting one is against the rules.

What part of NY are you in?
-
How did you go about fixing it?
-
I believe this might also be a result of the outward hand path as it may be causing you to work under the sweetspot. Much harder to turn the sweetspot off the plane with an outward hand path. Shortstop, if that is you in the avatar it's hard to see you extend 3-5" from that position and shank it. You look in prime postion to lag the sweetspot into impact.
-
Were you experiencing the misses described in the article? I noticed I have this in my swing and when I asked about it elsewhere I was told that it was inconsequential to hitting the ball. I was told that it is a result of having an outward hand path into impact. I've been working on a more in and down hand path and that has seemed to help, although I've yet to confirm that on video. Getting the right shoulder to go down plane and not just "down" also seems to help.

Yea, Callaways have the serial number on the 8 iron. Problem is that you don't know whether the serial number is for that specific set. You can make several sets of clones which all contain the same serial number that when given to Callaway, shows it as belonging to the set you have.

Best Instruction Book and/or Video?
spmurph replied to Floger's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Hogan's book is great for setup essentials. The Brian Manzella videos both on his site and on youtube are the best instructional videos I've seen. His stuff is based on the latest golf findings through science, but is explained in a simple manner. Best of all, he's not a "one-size-fits-all" guy! -
Unfortunately, simply swinging "as far right as you can" will not guarantee a straight shot. You still have to get the club face square/closed in relation to the path you are swinging on. Understanding the proper ball flight laws helps a ton. Erik has a video on his channel and here is another good one: Also, do yourself a favor and get Brian Manzella's Never Slice Again video. Best $20 you will ever spend on golf instruction.

I agree. Where your ball starts is a major factor in determining if you need to just fix the face, or the face and the path.
-
Just out of curiosity, how do you (specifically you), hit a fade?
-
Sorry I should have stated that open means open relative to the path the club is swinging on. If slicers could keep the face square/closed they wouldn't have to come over the top.
-
Really? What was your handicap when you had that probelm? I don't have stats but I'm willing to bet at least 75% of poor golfers fight the slice. Slice=open face.
-
I voted other because I feel the #1 problem is club face control. If you can learn to fix the face then you won't need the compensations, such as coming over-the-top.
-
Because you can't take a divot (or at least a good one) when you flip the clubhead past you hands prior to impact.
-
Try this drill: Get is a sand trap and use the club to draw a line in the sand where the ball would be. Then take a swing and make a divot in front of the line.
-
Actually, your hands are where you may need to focus. If you start down with an open or even on-plane club face, then you need to turn the sweetspot off of the plane and at the ball. It's tough to shank it if you hit the sweetspot.
-
Try and work on not lagging the hosel and feel the sweetspot coming into the ball. Face must be opening in the downswing causing you to lead the hosel into impact. Record your swing and try to figure out where this is happening. Usually from the transition down.

If you don't get fitted then how do you know what type of shaft to purchase with your club?
-
Thanks for the info! I'm pretty stocked with books and started my learning with Hogan's Five Lessons. I've got Utley's short game and putting books. I bought a putting mat and made the training aid in his book. Good stuff indeed, especially since there is two feet of snow here! Regarding the fitting, is Goftec any good? I searched them on here and read mixed reviews. I don't know of any other places to get fitted though.

I just started playing this past spring and I am trying to get a game improvement plan together. However, I am not sure in which order I should take the necessary steps. I intend to get more lessons (I've had about five with a not so great instructor) but I also want to get fitted for new clubs. Should I take the lessons before I get fitted for new clubs? If so about how many? I'm just not sure at which point in my game I should take the next step and get fitted. I also don't want to get new clubs without first getting fitted.
