Is this true for the average league golfer (bogey or worse) as well as the pros? In my limited golfing exposure it seems like driving is more important for the average league golfer because those wayward tee shots are extremely difficult to recover from. A league golfer can have the best approach game in the league, but hitting 3, either off the tee or from the rough, multiple times in a round, it won't matter how great his approach shots are. Am i missing something?

We don't have a match play like that. My league is points based so each match goes 9 holes and each player gets points for winning or tying a hole. So a total of 9 points is gained between the two players. For example, if I win 4 holes, tie 2 holes, and lose 3 holes I would get 5 points and my opponent would get 4 points. After the regular season the top 16 in points make the playoffs. Each year it's a struggle to get the same number of golfers in the league, let alone having a substitute list! It's a casual and fun league. Just about every golfer misses a few weeks for a reason (usually vacation) so this gives the League a way to have a match in one way or another. Forfeits in a league like mine would be a ridiculous outcome.

Does your league allow golfers to "golf out" if they cannot make it on league night? In a singles league guys are definitely going to miss due to a variety of factors. Forfeits are not even remotely a good way to handle no-shows in this league.

How does your league handle it when a golfer can't make it to the league night?

League night last night. Overall a very good round! Shot a 40 with 5 pars and 4 bogeys. No mishits at all. 5/7 fairways with the 2 I missed being due to trying to put a little more hand/ wrist action in the swing and I pulled both of those tee shots. Hit 3/9 greens. This has always been the weakest part of my game. 16 putts..as I putted pretty good.

I agree, but guys go on vacation, have to work, kids, etc. so missing happens. The two guys can play another day if they can both do it, but when that isn't possible this is the way the league handles it. Funny you say that. the last time I played this 9 hole course (we have 4 9-hole courses) I shot a 37 which is one of my best rounds ever.. So I could just not show up and they would use that score. But I want to golf and winning that way is pitiful.

My opponent last week on the first hole which is a par 5: 1 drive 2. hit ball into creek 3. takes drop 4. duffs shot 5. into greenside bunker ( i told him that he could take the ball out of the bunker as the bunker was in poor shape, but he declined my offer) 6. chunks shot and stays in bunker 7. hits out of bunker 8. chips on to green 9. sinks putt It is match play and i was giving him a stroke. In the cart he says "you got a 5, right? I got a 7" I told him, "No I had a 6 and you had an 8 ( i didn't count his chunk in the bunker as like I said the bunker was in bad shape)." He said oh yeah I forgot about the penalty for hitting in the creek! And apparently chunking in the bunker as well!! Lol. Also: Former brother-in-law told me this about his father and his fathers buddies: His father would tell him what he and his buddies would shoot and my former B-I-L was surprised at how well they shot. Well.... When someone gave them a gimme, they didn't count the gimme as a stroke! I guess they decided "gimme" was giving them a free stroke instead of the putt!!

My league is match play. Tonight my opponent won't be there so he can use his scores from the last time that he played the same 9 holes course for his scores tonight. Would you want to know his scores or not before playing? Does knowing the scores make you grind it out harder and focus more or do you put more pressure on yourself? I lean more towards not wanting to know and just play.

Well Mother Nature shined on this area yesterday. Turned out to be a nice evening for golf. League has been charmed this year. Not one rainout even though the rain here has been seemingly never ending.
-
We will/do play in light rain, but I'm definitely a fair weather golfer. I hate playing in the rain.
-
If Tiger's birdie putt on 18 isn't the greatest putt in golf history, then name one better!
-
How disappointing is it when it rains on league day/night!! Damn ;(

Mother nature blows! I want some sunshine on the course!

Caddie did not give him bad yardage. They agreed a few times on the yardage before he hit.

My 2 cents. I like Koepka. He brings a cool attitude to the game.

Private Clubs vs. Public - Advantages/Disadvantages

Well life is full of uniques experiences isn't it? That's what makes it so much fun!

See my post above regarding this. Of course it is courteous to check on any and all expectations. Where I seem to disagree with most of you is that if i was fortunate enough to belong to a private club I would in no way shape or form expect my guest to pay for anything. And I would refuse any offer they made. C'est la Vie. I think the difference lies in the assumption (possibly wrong) that someone who belongs to a private club is wealthy enough to afford providing a round of golf to a friend that said friend could never afford. That's what friends are for after all!
-
Since I will never have the financial resources to join a private golf club I can only state what I WOULD do if i was a member. Personally if I invited a friend to play golf and spend the day at the club I would not ask for anything in return. It would all be on me. It's my pleasure. Now I certainly understand a guest offering to pay the tip, but drinks, etc. But no way would I allow my guest to spend money. Frankly I 'm a little surprised that the member would ask a guest to pay for anything if they invited the friend to play at the club. We are allowed to do nice things without expecting retribution.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question. A friend was invited to a swanky private Country Club to golf. He got a round of golf and lunch (member has a food allowance each month that must be spent), but the member of the club that invited my friend told him that he had to take care of tipping the caddy. Is this the way it is usually handled? We both thought that when my friend was invited that meant "keep your wallet at home". Are we mistaken in thinking that? Thanks.

That's weak by my standard. From the list below, this field is not too exciting. Top 50 players in 2019 AT&T Byron Nelson field 3. Brooks Koepka 19. Patrick Reed 22. Marc Leishman 28. Hideki Matsuyama 31. Rafa Cabrera Bello 33. Alex Noren 36. Jordan Spieth 40. Henrik Stenson 42. Kiradech Aphibarnrat 43. Lucas Bjerregaard 46. Branden Grace 48. Charles Howell III 50. Thorbjorn Olesen

What a weak field. Pre-PGA tourney the reason?
