  1. I fluctuate between standard and midsize and I've always loved midsize grips, maybe with two wraps underneath as well. I did ask a fitter if the theory behind bigger grips means you have to turn the club more in the downswing but he said that some people buy into that theory, some done. His opinion is that there's so much going on already with the entire body that what the hands do on a grip is not as sever as say, the path of the club, etc.
  2. Love the show, loved Ka'anapali, probably because it's down the road from me. I'm in the group of fans that loves the women contestants. Who doesn't? The new one duplicates the Michigan one where they have teams of 1 guy and 1 girl. The girls in the new Prince Edward Island one are easy on the eyes too!
  3. Have fun at Liberty National! The course, views and clubhouse all look fantastic! Good luck!
  4. I once was going to Phoenix for business and I made an appointment with Hot Stix and everything. Yes they're expensive, and you don't even get a set of clubs out of it. They basically measure everything about you and put you on every conceivable monitor, video, etc. They're non-biased so they try and fit you into a driver, wood, hybrid and irons, and the shaft that's right for your particular swing. Since custom fitting is so important, I felt it was worth it. Long story short, my trip to Phoenix was cancelled and I had to fly off to another meeting. If you're in dire need of new equipment, and you have a consistent swing, then I think your game could benefit from Hot Stix. $$$ is the only thing else you'll need. Good luck!
  5. Volunteering at a PGA Tour or LPGA event can be extremely tiring but fulfilling at the same time. Tournaments can not operate without volunteers, there'd be no way to marshal the course or get players from place to place. Depending on what event you're volunteering at, they may make you pay for your uniform and even check your driving record, if your going to be in the transportation department. I'll briefly run through the major areas volunteers are needed, hopefully this will help you with your decision: Off Course Transportation: These volunteers assist with picking professionals up from the airport and take them to the tournament course or host resort. During the tournament play, i.e, Wed-Sun, they assist with the evacuation plan, in the event of inclement weather. Some tournaments, these volunteers act as shuttles between different areas. On Course Transportation: Some courses have difficult terrain which requires volunteers to drive players and their caddies from green to hole, or from 9 green to 10 tee. Marshals: These volunteers primary role is to keep the spectators quiet during tournament play. There are hole captains that oversee all the volunteers for each old or grouping of holes as well. One thing to remember is if you get assigned a front nine hole, for example holes 1-4, you'll be there very early in the morning as first tee time on a Thursday or Friday is usually 7:30AM. However you finish earlier and you get the rest of the day to watch golf. Scoring: The PGA Tour and LPGA use electronic hand-held scoring systems and there is a walking scorer for each group. Usually these volunteers are vets. The PGA Tour also has laser operators that stand in little towers in fairways and greens and they shoot lasers at the ball to judge distance from where he struck the ball, to where it lands. It's all computed and the info goes back to the Shotlink Truck where the information is spat back to all the ShotLink scoring computers Television: if you're lucky enough to be a TV Spotter, that's the most cush job of all. You drive the TV comentators from hole to hole or to their respective camera tower and hang out all day. These are usually kept by veteran volunteers as well. There a number of other volunteers that falls into the Charity Volunteer section but I won't go into that. The perks of being a volunteer range in the swag they give you, the food, watching golf. Some places give you a round of golf on another course, some tournament throw parties for their volunteers. I hope this helps!
  6. Speaking of the L5V, how do you like it? I tried to do a search on it and I couldn't find anything on it. At a recent demo day, a lot of people were trying that driver out and the general consensus is that it's just like you said, long, straight and a sharp looking club. I'm looking at another Nike Dymo Square driver but I'd like to get your thoughts on the L5V, thanks!
  7. If you don't mind me asking, what's the chief complaint for those that bring in Adidas shoes? Those are my new favorites. Thanks!
  8. I had a pair of those FootJoy Reel Fit shoes and the the only thing cool about them were the lacing mechanism. I think a lot of the Boomer Generation is accustomed to breaking in a pair of shoes, any pair. The stiff leather makes it so you have too. Our X and Y generation is just used to having shoes that have that broken in feel. Now having said that, I'm not trying to make it a generational thing, it's just the way that technology has progressed in the short time between generations. So, had the Reel Fit and Gel FJ's, liked them, just had to break them in and when the Reel Fit mechanism broke, I sent them back to FJ for repair, all free of charge. While I was waiting, I picked up a pair of Adidas Powerband shoes and I love them. I feel they circulate air better while the FJ's just turn into an oven. The fit around the arch is better and the toe-box is wider. This just goes to show that everyone's foot is different, and event each person's left and right foot are different. I wish other companies would license that ReelFit lacing mechanism, prevent re-tying of laces and it has a consistent fit.
  9. Here at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, we had a really good experience with Boo. He came and celebrated with us at the after-tournament party and was really funny and refreshing. His "aw shucks" demeanor is genuine. He posed for every photo, signed every autograph request, I mean the guy just loves to have fun and plays golf to make a living and support his family. This is the second year in a row we've had Boo and we hope he keeps coming back!
  10. A lot of people forget Cobra is owned by Titleist. A lot of people also still perceive Cobra as the garbage brand of clubs but I do believe they've come a long way. I'd really like to try that Cobra L5V driver, I hear it hits balls straight and a country mile. Has anyone hit one yet? I should search the rest of the forum.
  11. You know, I was taken aback by the sheer size of the Futura, but the thing has a very unique sound and a very easy take away. When I would travel with my clubs, I had to take the Future out because i was afraid it would get damaged from the travel. I still have it in the garage and I like to mess with it every once in a while. After the Futura came the Phantom, but I think SC came out with the Phantom because people bitched about how obnoxious the Futura was. Listen, I don't care what the damn thing looks like, if it's going to help me sink a few more putts per round, then I'm all for it. I think they call me a sucker too.
  12. Hmm, I do like the new TW line, those are sharp. I do think Nike makes a really good golf shoe, but I'm afraid my clumsy nature causes damage to those air sacs. Handsdown, Nike's are the most comfortable, in my opinion. Perhaps I'll give them a try when the new TW shoes go on sale. Thanks!
  13. It's been two years since i last had a pair of Nike golf shoes, but I'm hesitant to get another pair because the air bubble in heel on a pair I had and a pair my brother had both had leaks. I don't think they contributed to a decline in performance, but I will say they started to not be as comfortable. I've always been a big fan of Nike shoes, they're out of the box comfortable, however I can't ever recall having a pair of running shoes sport leaks in the air bubble, so why would a pair of golf shoes, something I wear 3-4 times a month, if that. I've since switched to Aididas Powerband shoes and they're quite comfy as well, but I wanted to ask the masses and see if they encountered leaky Nike Air golf shoes as well. Thanks!
  14. The SC in my bag rarely leaves, but when it does, I put in my Nike Unitized Neo and the two are remarkably similar. If you all recall, the Nike Unitized line's marketing ploy was all about having the shaft and head in one piece. I don't know how they actually did that, but I'm sure if I sanded down the fancy paint scheme, you'd see a weld in there somewhere. Regardless, the two feel identical. if you don't want to try a SC, find yourself one of these Nike Unitized putters.
  15. I had the Sumo SQ2 5900 for a long time and recently got out of one and into a 907D2. When I had the Sumo, it lived up to it's billing as a fairway finder. At that time, I wasn't interested in working the ball, I just wanted the thing in the fairway. In the past year, I've gotten lessons and focused on practicing a lot and the 907D2 doesn't give me any more length than the Sumo, but the confidence I got from the Sumo carried into the 907D2. My carry distance, according to the launch monitor in the academy, says I average about 266 carry distance on the 907D2. I never got on the monitor for the Sumo but I'd say they were the same. Good luck!
  16. My two favorites are the Odyssey Sabertooth and the Scotty Cameron Futura. Laugh at the Futura if you want, but if you've ever hit one, the sound is unique and it always goes on the line you want.
  17. My current set is a CCI cast irons with the R300 shaft and they're awesome. I thought they were a bit out of my league at first, but the ball comes of the face very lively and since I've had them the last two years, I've taken lessons and since my swing has gotten better,I've gotten more consistent and I need a stiffer shaft. Other than that, the irons are reliable, they always hit the yardages I want and I think they 're quite forgiving. Good luck!
  18. Thank you for the review! I just pulled the trigger on AP2 with the stock Project X 5.5 shaft, 5-PW and a 24 909H and 19H. They are my first set of clubs to be fitted to to me and I can't wait to try them in the bag. I'm thinking this weekend I might pick up an 909F2 3W as well. My current driver is the 907D2 and I really like where it puts my ball, I'm just not too keen on the flight path. Instead of a boring, piercing trajectory, I get sort of a ballooning effect. I did get on a launch monitor and my buddy here at the golf academy said that the numbers were great for that particular shaft and loft combo so I'm going to hang on to the 907D2 for now. Great review of all the clubs!
  19. www.kapalua.com . Not really a home course, but since I work there, I get to play. Bay is undergoing rennovation right now, but I hope they get them fixed soon so visitors can play them.
  20. I'm the Ops Director for Kapalua's two golf tournaments.
