St. Louis TST Outings (Archland) (2016)

I am supposed to have hip surgery in December. After that, count me in! -
The course we play has had collard shirt, shorts can not be jeans and soft spikes. They are now changing some with regards to the collard shirt. These new athletic style shirts that are dry fit can be seen across the course.

Yes, we are allowed but have to do it with a "flyer." We send that to the middle school and hope that it gets handed out. I asked if I could send two players over to the Middle School at then end of last school year but the response was that they would have to allow every sport to send athletes to the middle school and that wouldn't work. We used to do a "camp" but there was not enough interest since our course is so far away. There is a day when incoming freshmen tour the high school but that is later after tryouts. I do try to get a "display" up for that. Believe me, I've tried to think about everything. Still, 8 is just about all I can have. We have 3 schools that use our 9 hole (19-27) portion of the course. Those schools have Varsity, JV and freshman teams for boys and girls. We always have fun as well. I coach the girl's team and they have certain places that they have to stop when we travel. We play games like 100 yard game and it is a blast. I play the team and it can get intense. 100 yard game is where we all throw balls down somewhere around the 100 yard marker and play in from there. We have to do that when there are matches on our 9 and we have to move out before the other teams tee off. Good luck with your season as well. We have tryouts tomorrow and then play tournaments Monday and Tuesday of next week. The tournament on Tuesday is our county tournament and we have won that a couple of times.

No, we are an hour and a half at least from Rend Lake. I have played it a couple of times and have had fun doing so. It is a little different watching the workers work there. LOL

We can not recruit from other schools. It is frowned upon by the administration if an athlete is playing another sport. I also coach softball and so, if I don't have enough tryout tomorrow, I will ask some softball players to play. However, I have always avoided doing that. I have always had 8 every year that wanted to play golf. To me that is the fun of coaching them. We get basically no money from school. They buy their shirt and shorts with school logo. I buy range balls etc. This year, my AD did buy us logo balls but they are not good ones like we have had in the past. I will start selling water in my classroom now to pay for better balls. We just are not close to a course and so, I never get kids tryout who have played. Still, in 10 years, I have sent some 14 players on to play in college. Not one played a hole of golf before I got them. That is why this year is so troubling. I typically get calls asking if players need clubs, balls, ... As I have been typing this, two softball players contacted me and told me that they heard I am panicked a little. Both will come out if I ask. One is playing another fall sport and so, that might be tricky. We will see.

Hey all, been a while since I have made a post. Tomorrow, we start our new high school season. We've always fielded a strong team but last year was troubling. We started with 8 players and ended the season with 4. Still with 4 playing 6, we won 18 matches. We can only keep 8 and can only take 6 to matches due to some course rules and the fact I can't monitor players when I am at a match and the rest are at the course practicing. Our ADs in the conference set up the rule of only 6 in a match. We should return all but 2 players but, those that were injured last year are not coming out. They participate in other sports and will go to college in those sports. For the first time, no freshmen parents have contacted me. It is 13 miles to our course from our high school and our school does not provide transportation. So, traditionally freshmen have ridden with older players. I only have 2 that can drive this year. Only 3 players have signed up to come out. I'm kind of in a panic. Two of my returning golfers will do well. One was in the top 30 in state last year. We play a very tough schedule with over half of our competition against schools twice our size. In my 10 years as the head coach, I have never been this panicked about a team. I just can't believe we might not be able to field a team. Heck, every year, I get one or two of my one or two graduate golfers into college to play and so, we really do have success. Both my graduate golfers from last year's team had offers to play in college. Ok, so I am rambling. Wish us luck tomorrow.

What does your screen name / username come from?

My nickname, "Cannonball" is also from my HS Baseball Coach. In one game, and while sliding into 2nd base on two occasions in a game, I broke a SS's leg and a 2B's arm. So, Coach called me Cannonball. I am still referred to in my hometown, which is a half hour away, as Cannonball. I use "Cannonball" on a lot of sites. CoachB25 is what players called me. and 25 was my uniform number when I coached baseball. -
When my daughter started her collegiate softball career, she was not a home run hitter. However, her coach wanted to gear her for power. He told he she could hit 50 home runs if she focused on that goal. While she was proud of several records she holds at her school, her home runs records stands out. The old school record was 28 in a career. My daughter was playing on the road against a 1st Team All American pitcher who had not surrendered a home run all year. She hit #49 in the first game of a DH and #50 the second game off of this pitcher. This stands out because the next weekend, she tore her meniscus and so was injured the rest of the year. Still, she was an All American again and ended her career with 8 school records.

My daughter, in picture, was recruited by several colleges for softball. She chose to attend a school only 34 minutes away because a coach that was recruiting her to a D-I school (Assistant Coach) took the head coaching job of this local D-II. He told her that if she came, she would break every offensive record at the school. He also said that if she came, she would turn that program into a national power. It was such a neat Spring watching her wrap up her Senior Year. They were ranked #1 in the nation in NCAA D-II Softball. My daughter was the MVP of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association "Legends Tournament" to kick off the year. She was several times "Player of the Week" for her conference. She shattered just about every offensive record at the school. (Too many to mention but this year hit 18 home runs to give her a career record of 50 and she broke the career hits record among many other records.) Unfortunately, she tore cartilage in her knee at the end of the year. Her team still won the Conference Tournament for the 3rd Time in a row and she played every game though she could barely walk. For her efforts she was again recognized by two organizations as an All American. However, I am more proud that she was recognized as only the 11th athlete in the history of her university to be named an Academic All American. When she graduated, the Chancellor of the university came over to us and thanked her for changing the climate of her school. He said that no athlete has ever been as well known by all of the faculty and student body. My Wife and I were/are very proud of her.

Why wouldn't Hitler be off topic then? You can compare the "Conservative" to Hitler and that's on topic but you can't compare the "Conservative" to the liberal. I don't understand that. Still, its your forum so I'll be quiet.
-
rkim, I am not reading too much into Trump. I don't like Trump. However, he is not Adolph Hitler. So, I spoke up. Funny you tell me not to bring up Obama. Seems like you can compare Trump to Hitler but don't bring up Obama for comparisons. Got it. That a great open discussion if I've ever seen one. Carry on and I'll leave you alone.
-
You're right. No comparison. One promised all the entitlements and stuff for free and the other doesn't. That is why no Republican will be elected. 49% are now paying for everything. Hillary's plan will require another trillion if she meets her promises. Trump, well, he expects people to pay their way. No, not alike at all Comrade.

The whole ISIS Recruiting position is a Red Herring. They don't need Trump to recruit. Going back to pre Crusades, the quest for Jihad has been ongoing. The continued goal of a Caliphate drives their recruitment and so, Trumps position in simply a political ploy by the left. 8 years ago, couldn't I have made the same argument about the current President?

Regarding Conservatives and their lack of comments in this thread, It might be that some Conservatives such as myself are simply avoiding more "points" for poor behavior. So, perhaps they stay out even when one poster compares Trump to Hitler. How preposterous is that. BTW, the terrorist are trying to kill us and so, maybe, just maybe it is ok to kill them and/or their families. I seem to recall events like WWII where just that very thing happened in various bombings to win the war. That is, unless you think that smart bombs were used. So, let some of you enjoy yourselves. While I am not a Trump supporter, there is a huge portion of this country that does find some traction with what he is saying. Thus the polls.

IMO, one of the worst things a golfer can do to spoil their round is to think about the group behind them. Rather, have a routine that ensures that you are playing at a steady pace. For example, if you know the conditions like wind direction and speed and you get to a tee box, you should know which club you need but you might take two to the tee box if you are riding a cart. Helping a playing partner "mark a ball" by mentioning some object that is close to where their ball landed if you think that they are in trouble. Things like "first in tends the pin" helps a round go faster. There are so many ways to make sure that you don't waste time that you should be able to play a comfortable/enjoyable round without having to think about hose behind you at all. JMHO! BTW, I walk most rounds and so, have found that there are ways I can advance to my ball by heading down the rough on the sides of the fairway gaining distance while my playing partners play their balls. Even if I'm only 10 yards ahead of them but to the side in the rough and watching their shot, I can get to my ball a lot faster.

I agree and we set salt and a mineral block out for the deer in the winter. So, I wouldn't consider shooting one of them.
-
Talking to a former student who is now a colleague this morning, he told me about taking his son out this year for the fist time. They had an 8 pointer come into range and so, he was going to let his son get his first deer. Long story short, he couldn't do it yet and they didn't get the deer. So, he told his son that next year, that one will be bigger and they will get him. After they left the deer stand and went to get breakfast, all the young man would talk about is next year. The dad will still go out a few more times but with a bow. I live along a big woods and an open farm field. There will never be houses behind my house. Every morning, we have 4 does in our back yard. There is a huge buck hanging around as well. If I wanted, I could take him any day. Still, I won't do so from my house. We are out by ourselves.

My buddies and I used to cruise all of the time. Those were great times. We had the circuit we would cruise between a couple of towns that had all merged together. I'm older but graduated mid 70s. Still, the Beach Boy's music was kind of making a comeback and so, we would play Beach Boys, Lynard Skynard, REO Speedwagon, Led Zepplin, and some Eagles. All of those places are torn down now. Progress I guess.

How to design a "fair" and fun Golf course
CoachB25 replied to onthehunt526's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Exactly! Doglegs necessitate placement golf in many places in my area. We tend to have some radical doglegs. I don't like them on some courses. However, we have a couple that have doglegs with either a water or sand hazard protecting against anyone cheating a corner. I might add that on some courses, the tee box placement is the problem. Some have "safe" tee boxes for open play when, once in a while courses should open up those more challenging tee boxes. At my home course, two holes in particular have tee boxes that can drive you crazy when open. I love playing the course on those days. One has a water hazard that runs diagonally to the tee box but creates a kind of optical illusion where players constantly hit into that water. I crack up watching it all the time. The other has two water hazards you have to clear when the box is over to the side. I love that one also since I hit a three wood off or a slope and trust my ball will run out of steam before it gets to the water's edge. -
So you would deny all Americans the ability to defend their families? BTW, that young lady you see in my avatar, my daughter, can shoot with the best of them. She was dating a guy who was "trained" in the ROTC to use firearms. My nephew took that young man down to the creek with my daughter to shoot. When that young man came back he had a new understanding of what sharpshooter looks like. Like me, she started early with firearms and education and so, can rock and roll. For my family, gun ownership is a way of life. If some of you want to see a civil war, watch what happens when the government/liberals try to take guns away. Do any of you understand the number of people out there that own guns? Do any of you know the paramilitary groups out there? Like I just saw stated on TV, most people that are anti gun don't understand the benefits of guns. BTW, the 18th and 21st Amendments are not the same as the #2. The Second Amendment is contained in The Bill of Rights. You know, when the government (King/King's Men) tried to take guns away from the colonists. There are those out there that feel that the government will attempt to do the same again as we become socialist. (If you don't believe this, you haven't spent any time around paramilitary groups.) Edited to add: I need to leave this thread as I'm posting way too much in it. I hope none of you ever need someone like me. However, for those that do, me and my family among others are out there.

Boogielicious, I'll concede the aerosol. I am a certified welder and a machinist as well as a teacher. In fact, I was a machinist for a very long time. It is amazing the things you work on and learn doing that trade. So, I'll have to pass on explaining my expertise when it comes to certain things.
-
boogielicious (sp), what is your point? If your point is that you can take something legal and make it illegal then yes a person can. You should see what I can do with an aerosol can. You should see what I can put on the tips of my arrows. It will really make your life interesting. Evil exist and you know what, people will always find ways to skirt the law. That doesn't make it right for the American People to be lied to.

Hey, there was not any hypocrisy in the President's speech last night. We should collectively blame the NRA (even though these folks and the vast majority of shooters in cities are not members) and all other gun owners by asking for more restrictive gun laws, while at the same time telling us we should judge the people who committed the crimes as individuals and not judge the Muslim community as a whole. Man, it sounds scary when they continue to call the AR15 an Assault Rifle. Therefore continuing to knowingly lie to the American people. An assault rifle is fully automatic. An example of an assault rifle is a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934. BTW, did anyone tell the President that the two shooters in San Bernadino were not on, "the no fly list?" Finally, I'll repeat myself: It is already illegal for criminals to get guns. Not one mass shooting has involved a firearm purchased from a gun show. Automatic weapons are already illegal. Assault Weapons are already illegal. The AR in AR15 does not stand for Assault Weapon. This gun is being attacked because of its looks. Most handguns have the same rate of fire. He might address banning the number of rounds in a weapon. So, you need to determine if it matters whether someone has 10, 14, 19 rounds in a gun when they can eject and reload rather quickly. Therefore, I predict that the President will propose to change the Second Amendment and I believe he will mention using Executive Orders to do so. I'll leave my real thoughts about that to myself for now.

My goal is to play more and get my game back. I am supposed to have my hips replaced at Christmas but, because my Dad is in such poor heath, I will wait until the summer. Once that is done, I intend to get my game back. Oh, I still score some but you know when your swing is off. Personally, I am over compensating and really hitting a draw. It isn't a hook yet but we're close sometimes. I played it all summer but want my old game back. Also, I want to walk the course. I have never been one to use a cart. I love being out in nature and don't mind letting others play through if I'm taking my time on a round. I want that type of round back in my life.

Things are looking up in Chicago. So far this weekend, only 1 death and 14 wounded to this point. Thanksgivings weekend, only 8 were killed 20 wounded. To put this into perspective, forty or more people were shot every weekend from July 24 to 27 to Aug. 28-31. I believe that the people committing these shootings are criminals and so, don't really care about any proposed gun legislation since Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the nation.
