I got this back a while ago, but I've been swamped with work and other things so I was never really able to provide an update, until recently. I received an old Scotty Newport in Oilcan finish as an Xmas gift from my wife, it was purchased with the intent of me sending it to the custom shop for refurbishing. I'm really pleased with the end result, but the problem is it's almost too pretty to game, so it hasn't seen the bag yet. Maybe this Wednesday at the Refuge Golf Club with BigAl as I battle the Wisconsin propaganda machine? We'll see... Before: After: Before: After: Before: After:

Golf Jacket / Zip Ups...Suggestions?
SuaSponteMn replied to RKO's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Adidas makes several a nice ones as well, I own a full length, 3/4, and convertible. Nice thing about them is that they seem to be built with range of motion in mind so they don't feel like other full length jackets... -
Should I change anything?
SuaSponteMn replied to Cleveland Gunmetal's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I carry the 53* and 60* degree wedges, they fill the yardage gaps in my irons most effectively. 56* & 60* would be too big a gap between Pitching and and Sand wedges, and 51* & 56* keeps the 60* out of my bag which I find extremely useful personally. At your handicap, it shouldn't be an issue to hit it (Lob), but if you're not comfortable over it, you could lose some strokes with it. All about what feels good to the individual -
1) My primary goal for 2007 is to shoot in the 70's. In order for me to achieve this I'm going to have these smaller goals: A) When on the course, play the game and don't try to make changes B) Focus on a smooth tempo instead of distance C) Aim at smaller targets

The 360's are quite a bit higher on the foodchain, but those don't look too bad either.
-
I agree completely on the Tour 360. Outside of my current running shoes, they are probably the most comfortable shoes I own; period. Add to that the new ones aren't all the much different, and you're getting a great deal.
-
Not my thing, but I wouldn't wear that style of sandal off the course either. Flip-flops, sure... But not those I think I saw someone wearing them once. They seem contradictory, lets put spikes in the ground for traction, then hold a bare foot to it with velcro straps...
-
My vote would be for the MP60's but according to what's in your bag currently, you've already made your decision...

My wife suprised me with this as a gift for Christmas this year, said I should send it to, "that special shop your always talking about" Putting this one through the full restoration at Scotty's Custom Shop including: Pro Platinum finish Sight dot on the top 2 sight lines on the flange Initials and Custom stamp on the toe Red & blue paint fill with white for the alignment aids and Titleist script Navy custom shop grip and headcover I'm really, REALLY excited to see the end results...

Midweek last week, it was 40 and the snow was gone, now it's 30 and there's 18 inches of the white stuff on my lawn again. I had March 24th picked as the first Saturday I'd be able to swing the clubs on a course, now it's looking like Mid-April... Anyone else in the northern midwest just about ready to move?

HELP!!!! Got Rust spots on my new Mizuno Irons
SuaSponteMn replied to carmo's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
You're going to want to play close attention to them now, you may have removed more of the chrome with that wire brush which could potentially increase your chances for even more rust to return. My suggestion would be to spray them down with WD-40 after each cleaning at least for a little while. -
Companies strengths/weaknesses
SuaSponteMn replied to BigHitta's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm returning to Taylormade after a terrible experience with their older irons, the 320's just weren't for me. I absolutely love what I'm playing now (LT2's) and I've got a V-steel that could have easily stayed in the bag forever if it wasn't for my new HiBore. The drivers confuse me though, there's like 17 current offerings with screws in them making each one essentially 4 different drivers; that's like 4.7 billion different configurations. Then there's Cleveland, I've never been more comfortable standing over anything else, every driver I've had has been incredible (Launcher 400, Comp, and now the HiBore). The HiBore fairway hasn't reached the course yet but it kills it on the launch monitor and simulators for me; their wedges are second to none, the CG series is awesome, but I prefer the 588's I'm playing right now. I feel like I'm cheating when I pull their HALO out of the bag as well, super easyer to hit and it's not overly large and the face doesn't seem as closed. All the being said, I made the mistake of buying the CG4's last year, worst mistake I'd made since the TM320's; not a big fan of the irons at all. Callaway got me through a few years where I had completely lost my swing, the Big Bertha irons just screamed forgiveness to me. Their current releases like the X20 Tour are impressive and make me wonder if they won't be back in the bag someday. The Odyssey putters were the only thing I didn't care for, something about the inserts just didn't feel right; maybe the new black series? The HX Tour is the best golf ball I've ever tee'd up. IMO Mizuno probably makes the best irons out there, my brother plays the MX23 and thinks they're incredible, I've been fighting a really strong urge to pickup a set of MP60's it's the only iron I've hit that I like better than my current set. Titleist has spent a long time making clubs I didn't think I was good enough to hit, while that has changed recently the stigma's still there for me. Lotta people swear by the Vokeys, I personally prefer Cleveland. One club of interest for me will be the 907D1 when it's released, although it will be hard for me to find one to hit in LH. Love Scotty Cameron putters though, feel is unmatched IMO. The ProV1 is a good ball, it's not the best one for me. Ping also has a huge following (obviously). I tried the I3+ but it felt harsh to me, not to mention I always thought Ping clubs looked like a 'WT' muscle car that someone didn't have enough money to restore, so they just left it bondo grey. My least favorite brand has been Nike. Everything I've tried from them felt like a fishing lure; cheap and flashy. The original driver was awful, the current offering isn't all that great IMO either. Their irons haven't gotten my interest either, the Pro Combo was probably the best I've seen from them, and they stopped making them. The Slingshot looked more like a lacrosse stick than a golf iron, the CCI's look nice, but based on everything else I've run into, I don't think I'd waste my time. I've got a dozen ONE Platinums in my bag though, hoping their balls are better than their other equipment; we'll see come spring -
Initial thoughts on Footjoy Reelfits
SuaSponteMn replied to NCGolfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
With the new Adidas Tour 360II coming out, you can find last years for 129.99, which is down from 179.99. Super comfortable... -
After doing a lot of reading since it's release, I tried to find one to hit (left-handed) to see for myself. First off, kudos to Nike: This is the first time I can ever remember a brand new, never been seen before driver being available to LH players on the weekend it's released. I hope this is a trend that everyone else in the industry follows. Sadly, that was really the best thing I've got to say about this club. I always thought of myself as a technology guy, I mean I play a HiBore and thats one of the new fandangled "geometric" drivers right? There's no possible way I'd get hung up on shape. Well it wasn't really the shape as much as the sheer size of it. Add the sound to it, and the fact that I was hooking it consistently (probably a shaft issue, was a R flex, stock shaft) and it was enough to dissuade me from any additional time spent on it. On a positive note for my wife though: The HiBore XL wasn't drastically different from the original IMO, so I can't really think of anything I'll need this year other than a shaft for my 3W. Overall, I'm really happy that companies are no longer hung up on traditional shapes. This years batch of drivers are going to get more people in the fairway more often, which will get more people excited about the game, and that's awesome.

Love my new "Square Sumo"!!!
SuaSponteMn replied to mrbillinoc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Just out of curiosity, if you hit all but one fairway why would you change the shaft? I'd go back to my stock shaft if I could get that kind of performance. -
You're correct, Tiger turned pro in 1996, his driving accuracy for that year was also 69%, much higher than 2006, where it was 60.71%. I'm not completely sure anyone else on this board would define Tiger Woods as a bomb & goudge player anyway. As for the relevancy of your attempt to compare Tiger Woods driving accuracy and distance to the marketing campaign Taylormade is using, I still really don't see it. Emphasis has always been on long drives, but IMO bomb & goudge has been made popular by players like Bubba Watson who's average driving distance is 323.1 yards but only hits the fairway 53.29% of the time. At a higher level, I agree with you completely though as I stated earlier in this thread, I do'nt care for how TMAG is marketing this line of golf clubs. I'm guessing we'll need to agree to disagree on the rest here, but I certainly think we can agree that there are items more relevant to this discussion than our current debate.
-
This is a little off topic as I was discussing TMAG's driver marketing, but I'll respond regardless Did Tiger really implement bomb & gouge in his first year on tour? Seems to me he was substancially more accurate in the beginning of his career than he is now, as a matter of fact there's evidence of this right here at the Sand Trap: http://thesandtrap.com/pga/tiger_woo...ving_analysis/ Accuracy in 2000 was in excess of 70%, 2005 he was below 60%. Tiger-proofing is a totally different topic from that even, IMO Tiger-proofing really only helps Tiger as it keeps the shorter, but more accurate iron players out of the mix...

Lamkin Crossline vs. GolfPride Tour Velvet
SuaSponteMn replied to SuaSponteMn's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Appreciate the input, I used winn grips once and they lasted all of about 2 months. Report back and let us know if they've improved at all in durability. -
I've always regripped with Tour Velvets, last year I bought a couple of 588's from Cleveland that had grips on them that just felt great from a tackiness and firmness perspective, looking at the pattern it appears more like the Crossline to me. I've also been reading that while they're both great grips, the Crossline seems to last a bit longer. Putting up a poll, wondering what others are thinking about this.

Completely agree, I was was a FootJoy guy for quite a few years, then when the 360 came out I switched; I can't see myself going back. I did have an issue with my first set of 360's leaking, but the switched em out no questions asked. Now I've got a brand new pair that's only gone to the range since the season ended up here. Still like the new TourMetal a bit better from a looks perspective, although I've gotta believe they feel about the same riding on the same footbed and outsole.
-
Watched something on the PGA equipment show yesterday, they seem to be marketing the Burner to "bombers who want to hit it as far as they can, fairways or not" and the Superquad to "technicians, who like to plot their way around the golf course"; the TMAG guy literally said that. To me that puts a negative spin on the Burner right out of the gate, although that's just my perspective, and I'm by no means a marketing guru. Anyone else just completely overwhelmed by the offerings from Taylormade in the driver arena? I mean: R5-N R5-D R5-TP R7425 R7425-TP R7460 R7460-TP R7460-SuperQuad R7460-SuperQuadTP R7Draw (I know I'm probably missing one or two as well) And now... Burner460 I suppose if sales are strong enough to keep production profitable, cool, but seriously I'm lost
-
Lotta people love that shaft, I've heard it plays a lot stiffer than most others. When I was looking, if I was a stiff in a V2 or an NV, I was a regular in a Graffaloy Blue. Don't hear a lot of bad things about it though.
-
For fans of these shoes, here's what the new ones look like: I really like my current 360's this isn't much of a change. Nice and all, but I'm really interested in giving the new Tour Metals a shot. Same footbed, a little more traditional.

Just out of curiosity, what passes as bitter cold down there? I always find it interesting to do this comparison
