your opinion of 3-piece golf balls
J.P. replied to ajgunn82's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Well, I have used Titleist ProV1x and thought it too hard off the driver for me and perhaps just not quite enough spin on the greens. The ProV1 was softer but more side spin on the driver - although very nice on the greens. I tried the HX Tour and liked it very much. Not too much side spin driving and still very good spin on the greens. The HX Tour56 has sensational spin on the greens, but again, I when I hit a drive with a little too much fade or draw, it becomes a slice or a hook. I have settled on the HX Tour. After Erik's review of the Taylormade balls, I will be trying a box of the Red & Black with my next ball budget money. In the premium ball market, differences can be subtle and very personal regarding what you want a ball to help you accomplish in your game. -
I really enjoyed the Prince Course in Princeville on the island of Kaui. Beautiful views on every hole and a fun, challenging test!

Help explain shoulder turn to my daughter
J.P. replied to allin's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I had a teacher once simply stand a few feet behind me while I addressed the ball. He then had me put down the club, and told me to turn and look at him back there behind me. This is a good start cause you can't do it with out turning shoulders!!! I suppose the hips could go too far, but hey, worry about that problem should it develop once this one is solved! -
Shaft PUREing, Puring, or Spining
J.P. replied to GreensDruid's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
No question, I have my woods SST PURED. Have not done my steel irons though. Very valuable to me and my head when on a tight driving hole to be confident in the consistency of my 3 wood to go right where I am aiming. Now if I could just get my putter PURED . . . -
Possible USGA ruling on long/belly putters
J.P. replied to gas_can's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Anyone bothered if I take my gap wedge - get a 48" shaft put in it, anchor it to my chest, then just use it to chip & pitch? I voted Yes. Anything that makes guys that putt poorly change into guys that putt well again should be banned! -
1. Chris DiMarco (45) He's had a tough year with injury & family loss - still he fights on. Great example. 2. Charles Howell III (53) I keep waiting for him to reach his potential . . . 3. Corey Pavin (57) Boy I like seeing Pavin competing again! Enjoyed his win earlier this year! One for the short hitters!! 4. Ryan Moore (85) this far down needs to win to get there. As an ex UNLV player with a ton of potential - I'd like to see him have a coming out party on this stage. Probably have to wait till next year though for any parties. #2. Seems like a prestigious honor to me & a chance for even more money. I guess Phil is now outside the need for money and his focus is saved for majors.

Well, technically he has not. While Tiger was competing in the Ryder Cup,Sept 22-24, Eric Axley defeated Justin Rose, Dean Wilson, and Anthony Kim by 3 strokes to win the Valero Texas Open, in San Antonio held Sept 21-24. I do understand your point though. World events are not necessarily PGA Tour events. He has won the last 6 PGA Tour events he has entered.

What about the various Tours not finding much benefit in granting these exemptions anymore??? Golf Channel buy exemptions???

Anybody Know who makes this putter
J.P. replied to neilf123's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
That is indeed the Taylor Made Rosa Monza. It was out a few years back. Later they came out with the Mezza. You can certainly find these on e-bay & I think my GolfGalaxy had them for $49.95. That is $100 less than new! I have one in the closet and liked it very much for a long time. -
Have a look ( Golf Videos )
J.P. replied to Steven McFarlane's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
The teacher refers to another web site in a couple of these videos. At that site, everything you are viewing is sold for $149.95??? Must be some kind of bug that these are available to view. -
Back in the 'swing' of things, looking for advice
J.P. replied to FlyByWire's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Dude! Don't be confused! ENJOY this process!!! Everyone loves to go out and find new clubs!!! No question, get fitted by a reputable guy on a launch monitor. Of course they will adjust lie angles, but also grip size, shaft flex, shaft length, EVERYTHING!!! When you want to go upright, you can bend the club up a degree, or add to its length. I may be wrong, but I think a half inch longer corresponds to 1* upright. Don't quote me on that - but if you want 4* upright, you can bend it 2 or 3 then add the correct amount of length! Go shop for irons you like the look & feel of then worry about precise fitting of them!!! And Enjoy the process!!! Good Luck! -
Callaway pre owned which one would you pick?
J.P. replied to kamachi923's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
These two clubs are very good choices for a beginner. Certainly the Big Bertha's may make things easier for you in this initial learning period. I would probably get them for this reason and the fact that it would be nice to have the 10 wedge and the fact that you probably won't want to hit a 3 iron in the next few years. (rather hard to hit well) Fact is, you will beat the heck out of whichever clubs you buy for the next couple years, then trade them in for X-16's, or X-18's as you improve. Either of those shafts are very common and very good. Problem is you need to know which flex to get. Regular or Stiff or X-Stiff. True Tempers are Regular, Stiff, and X-stiff. With Rifle shafts, flex is graduated and numbers are assigned to the varying stiffness. Ie. . . 4.0 is more flexible than 5.0 And 5.0 is more stiff than 4.0 but more flexible than 6.0. If you are younger and stronger, these steel shafts are appropriate. There are graphite shafts out there for irons as well, available for those of us who are not as strong as we once were, or are just slowing down cause of father time or just want a lighter shaft! You may want to head to a golf shop & get on a monitor & just ask the guy to tell you which flex it looks like you need with your swing & then go home & buy that flex in whichever club you choose. Fact is that you will likely buy several sets of irons in the first 5 years or so of your golf life! A very forgiving set will bring the most pleasure while you are learning! Good Luck! -
Dry Ink, As unpleasant as that sounds, it is a great idea! Go to a teaching professional and have him go over the basics - grip, alignment, aim, posture etc. . . Nothing worse than having to CHANGE bad habits developed on our own. Anyway, he will likely have some very good imput on what clubs you should buy, and may even be able to help you get a discount! Best of luck!

Tommy, I am no club expert - but. . . I love the MP30's. They are smaller than your Titleists and are very workable but still have some forgiveness. Their smaller sweet spot will challenge you. I think they make a good transition from what you have to say a club you might use if you are 5 or lower. I think hitting the sweetspot consistantly is the challenge as you move into ultra workable "players" clubs. A club that has too much game improvement design, does not train you to hit the center of the face - these will. Once you do that very regularly, you need less forgiveness and can move on to the Mizuno MP32, or MP67 or one of Titleists players clubs. Bottom line is you have these in front of you for cheap! They are awesome! Best of Luck!

Just scored an all most new set of M-60's!!!
J.P. replied to Kahuna's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Ditto what he says above! I use the MP 52-07 gap wedge sometimes in the bag. I love it! I would rather knock down an 80 to 90 yard shot with it than hit a full swing Cleveland CG10 sand wedge in! I too have played with the idea of switching to the MP60's! Let us know how they play as you go forward!! Good Luck!!! -
Drizz! You want to get to +3??!!! Be careful! There are always two ways to go! Check out the new Mizuno MP67! Awesome looking! I know you can handle them - perhaps a next generation MP60 is close behind! I have heard MP60 promotes a bit higher ball flight. . .

Heck Yes you can get better going out once a week! BUT! You must mix in range time, AND you must work on the particular problems that are holding you back! I actually get out around once a week. I do alternate a 3 hour or so practice session one week with a day on the golf course maybe the next. Most of the time is spent hitting little chips & pitches around our chipping green. Full swing time is spent on specific drills that are targeted towards my full swing negative aspects. You must change/add to what you are doing to get better, be it in the gym, lessons monthly, or at the range. I think it was Albert Einstein that said "insanity, is doing the same thing over and over, yet expecting a different result ". GOOD LUCK!!!

Denver Broncos!!! Much to prove this year now that our old offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak is gone to be headcoach of the Texans. So far, we can't get it in the endzone. I was at Mile High last weekend for the Chief game - an ugly win.

Great Posts Chan! Don't leave out Jim Furyk - a terrific wind player as evidenced by his multiple wins here in windy Las Vegas. Also, Monty plays a fade almost exclusivley. On a hole that calls for a draw, he'll just aim farther left & cut it to the middle!
-
I have both the driver version and iron version. I do like both of them in general. I think they stretch you a little further than you will go without a little momentum . . and seem to get you on a nice plane. On the down side, i find that cause of the weight, the driver slowed my arms down a bit in relation to hips clearing. This will cause a slice when you get back to the range & one must work to speed arm swing up again for the first few "live " shots. I do like them though, I don't use them as religiously as i thought i would.

Ken, just a couple thoughts here. 3 Woods are considered straighter because the increased loft adds backspin that mitigates the effect of unwanted side spin. This is not a benefit found with lower lofted Drivers. BUT, if you truly swing at 95, and if your path is correct, (in to out, not out to in) it could be that the shaft flex "Regular" is not for you. You may have a better result with the NV Stiff flex. Head could be lagging behind depending on how you load the shaft. Go to a golf shop & get on a launch monitor to pinpoint the Driver problem. Is it out to in path? Is it open face at impact? Is it hitting off the heel? Once you know the real problem, you'll be better able to correct it!
-
Who are they targeting this towards???!!! Anyone that has been playing for a while will have a hard time going from a pear to a square! No doubt they'll bring Barkley back on TV to sell these - I don't see Tiger doing it.
-
No, you are not the only one. I too am far more comfortable with the short little chips & pitches around the green than the long putts from the wrong tier and quadrant of the green. It is very likely due to the fact that no less than half my practice time is spent with the wedges chipping & pitching and not much is spent practicing the long lag. I noticed this myself a while back and since I have spent more time on the long lag putt, the fear of it is vanishing, and closer putts are even easier!
-
Of course I do - I know I'll shoot a good one next time - they take the 10 best . . . of the last 20 - bad scores don't kill your handicap once in a while . . . Looking for a fight? Go look for that guy E kicked off yesterday - I'm just here to chat!

I don't know what advantage one has by being untruthful on this topic. After 18 holes the truth reveals itself. I'd rather hit the fairway. You guys should come out to Las Vegas! I regularly carry it just 225-235 on good contact . . . but baby it rolls on these ultra hard dry fairways!!! Usually can count on minimum 250 on good contact and 275-285 several times a round. If I can catch the back side of this mogul on hole two, I am past 300!!! I calculate my average drive distance without including misshits. I want to know what I can do when I hit it square - not when I miss.
