  12. @RefrigeratorRunning, Bill has a great point here. If you bogey every hole, you shoot a 90. Play smart. At your stage, don’t make Par your goal for every hole, don’t go for every GIR, and don’t go for riskier shots which increase the likelihood of getting wet or going OB. If it’s a longer par 3 guarded by bunkers, lay up and chip on so as to reduce the likelihood of double or triple. Even if you successfully play the top 5 HCP holes for double bogey and the rest for bogey, you shoot a 95. I get that just because you play for bogey on every hole doesn’t mean you’ll achieve it, but the idea is to play shots that will reduce the likelihood of a big number. You’d be surprised at the score you’d achieve if you simply advanced the ball with a 150yd with each tee and fairway shot, chipped on and two-putted. It’s more just course management: looking at your realistic club distances (not just the best 7i you flushed that one time last month) and shot zone mapping (LSW). Now all of those recommendations obviously aren’t the long term strategy as you improve your game and swing mechanics (we know GIR is king - LSW), but like Bill said, learning how to score with the game you currently have will always be a skill to hone and will help eliminate bigger numbers.
  13. It’s been awhile since this topic had attention. I played 9 yesterday and was playing well and thought of this challenge. I didn’t have time for the full 18, but wanted to bump topic for new folks unaware also a reminder of 6’ putt challenge four ball pitch challenge Opposite swing challenge and flop shot catch challenge these are fun to do and fun to watch for everyone!
  14. 39, +3. Diff 9.6 4 Bogies, 1 Birdie FW: 5/7 GIR: 5 Putts: 16 One of my better rounds. Felt like I played better than I scored. Missed two birdie putts by a couple of inches…coulda, shoulda, woulda
  15. We have both a TopGolf and a Drive Shack. The Drive Shack is significantly nicer without much price difference. I don’t think Drive Shack is a very big company, but I suspect there are other similar competitors out there making it a little tougher on them.

  22. ^^^^this. @Coach Whitty, coming into the discussion a little late and from a lay person’s perspective, to answer the question, I don’t think instruction has gotten too technical for the amateur golfer. I think technology has made great gains and is super useful for instructors to evaluate their students, but that the better instructors communicate their recommendations in an easy-to-understand non-tech manner for those of us who don’t learn that way. I know @iacas and other instructors/coaches here use a lot of cool gadgets to evaluate swings and all the associated parameters, but as he and other have stated, he only provided me with one, uncomplicated “priority piece” at a time on which to focus…not a myriad of swing thoughts as you mentioned in one of your posts. I suppose like any area/profession in life, there is a spectrum wherein some instructors likely do go overboard and over complicate things for their students, but if you are asking about the typical “good” to better instructors, I think they can communicate their analysis in a a way that isn’t overly technical (Tour players/coaches excluded as they need more technical fine tuning). But back to @saevel25’s point above, it’s super helpful at times to show the student that “feel ain’t real” because many times I believe I’m doing something correctly, but when I’m presented film/data that shows me otherwise, it convinces me to make changes rather than throwing the instructor away since I believe he’s misdiagnosing the issue. Hope that makes sense
  23. I am also a shorter driver of the golf ball (240-ish), but a few years ago I dropped from a 16 down to a 9 within a couple of months of reading LSW. Now I’m not that great (fluctuating between and 8-9HCP) but I rarely play more than 20 rounds/year (only played 4-5 times this year) and my swing is far from pretty. My point is: my experience was that getting to a single digit was more about strategy than swing mechanics & playing a lot. As others have said (@billchao @GolfLug), it’s about minimizing the bigger numbers via simply advancing the ball in play and avoiding a lot of doubles and triples. Some of that goes back to Harvey Pennick’s LRB quote “never follow up a bad shot with a stupid one,” but LSW changed my approach to the game and to practice focus through better understanding of separation values/ skill values, ultimately making big differences in my scores. Granted I did make some swing changes suggested in the book based on 5SK (5SK.com) and Iacas’s & the guys’ patient swing critiques on the MySwing thread, but I feel like I made the biggest/quickest improvement from game & course management suggestions in the book. Admittedly, all of that will only take you so far…thus @iacas and the members of this site spend a lot of time and real estate discussing swing mechanics and the involved physics because they care to be the best they can be.
