Say NO! to gps/yardage computers
ArrrrJay replied to Topanga's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I abstain. I only don't like them because I don't have one... Anyways, if you told me to hit an 81 yard shot, I'd probably be less likely to hit the mark, then if I was just trying to make my normal swing and base it off feel. -
Great work! I would think it's even better that you came back from those bogeys. I'm sure you can get par on those holes most of the time, so under par is attainable.

Dissapointed in Bridgestone Tour-B330RX
ArrrrJay replied to mutadayen's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've been playing these balls all year, and love the feel of them, especially around the greens. I have a slower swing speed, so the ball's softness works well for me. The only problem I run into is my slice, these balls to exaggerate the spin a bit, great for my approach, bad for my drives. -
if someone hits into me, I pitch their shot back about 40 yards... Not trying to hit at them, or damage the grounds (stomping ball into the ground like some), or steal their ball.

Had a PB round of 90 (on a par 71). 27 putts and decent short game made the score for me. I left about 4 flubbed full shots out there, and a painful mistake, accidentally hit my ball during a practice swing on a chip, but luckily 2 putted for double.... only had 3 fairways and 1 GIR, so its was a scrambling round, but I made some great long putts to save par, or bogey, that made the whole round. Hopefully I'll break 90 by the end of the year.

Do crappy range balls damage clubs?
ArrrrJay replied to Lean, Mean, Hitting Machine's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I just noticed the other day while cleaning my clubs, that a few of my irons have deep chips/dents in them, after going to the range a lot. I use a Bridgestone B330-rx at the course, so I can't imagine that ball would mess up my clubs... The range I go to has the normal crappy floater balls, but also has many no name, regular old balls mixed in. I think there were some rock hard old stale balls in there. My irons are cheap golfsmith cast iron cavity backs, so I'm thinking they would be easier to scuff/dent/chip. -
it just counts as two strokes instead of one.

Wow! Thanks for all the great info. Sorry. I had been lurking here for a while and never saw it come up. Will try that search thingy next time

How do you do it? My grips are getting dirty, but have plenty of grip left. How would you clean? My gloves keep getting dirty, wet, and sweaty, and get crusty and hard. Is there any way to clean these? Sorry if it's a dumb question that's been answered.

One of the commentators during the PGA was saying that the next step for increasing difficulty should be to NOT allow players to use any line or marking on their ball for putting... I know that's the only way I can putt, since I'm wearing glasses. When I get over the ball and look left, i feel like I'm aiming WAY right. Never had this problem when I didn't wear glasses, but back then I only played par 3's and still lost the ball in the air at about 150 yrds.

Good post, just want to correct you on one thing... Rugs and furniture are oriental. Humans are Asian, or Korean, Chinese, etc. Props to Y.E. I was rooting for him the entire day, the way he kept his cool and smiled after his worst of shots is how everyone should strive to play.

I enjoyed watching his attempt at driver-driver on another par 5... Didn't work out, but wow!

a couple points that might help. When you are at the range, practice all your shots with a deliberate setup routine, and with a very specific target in mind. Do the same at the course, don't try to hit the fairway, try to hit the spot 4 feet to the left of the middle of the fairway. Nerves on the course can effect your tempo. make sure you pay attention to your tempo and pace while practicing and playing. I have a few friends that start rushing badly on the course, and it causes many many problems.

Tiger says he wasn't fined Tiger Woods cleared the air Tuesday, saying he was not fined for critical remarks about a rules official during the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational.
-
Tiger said in his PGA Championship press conference today that he was NOT fined, and that the report is erroneous. He was asked a few more questions about the event, and the official, and his answers didn't change, and he commented the same as on Sunday. He was asked if he thought he shouldn't have used the officials name, and he replied "No, cause it was John who put us on the clock." No apologies from TW.

Not a jerk at all, the fact that they are skipping holes takes away any "right" they may have to play through. Otherwise, anyone could just go from hole to hole, and tell whoever is about to play, that they are going to play through them... Not how the golf course works.

Played the front 9 at my home course, and had a great day. had 3 pars, and 1 triple and a double, the rest bogeys. +9 for the front, new PR for me. I missed my birdie chip on #1 by a half an inch. Hopefully I can repeat and string together a decent back. If you add up my PR's for the front and back of this course, it's an 89 (my best 18 is 92).

I had a real messy 9 yesterday. Was looking to break 50, play good bogey golf. This plan was great for 6 of the holes, but on 13, 14, and 16 I blew up bad. A combination of poor approach shots and horrible short game left me with 2 quad bogeys and a triple... Left me with a 54 on the round, not happy. At least I know what to work on this weekend.

Putting is KILLING me (rant and plea for help)
ArrrrJay replied to Dr_Fu_Manchu's topic in Golf Talk
Are you missing short, long, or everywhere? All you can do is identify how you miss the most, and work at that. Also, did you warm up on the putting green before your round? I always putt better when I take the time to do this. -
course management for high hdcp players
ArrrrJay replied to whetstone's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
For a high handicapper like myself, I try to use the clubs that I'm hitting best that day, if it's the driver, great, but usually it's not. For me, the only reason to risk using driver is if I have a chance at getting to the green in 2, otherwise, I am only concerned with setting up my approach for 75-100 yards out. That could be a 5w/7i, or a Driver/9i, or 4i/5i. Whatever I am more likely to succeed in getting to the approach. At that point, it's all short game, you either have it or you don't... Also, when you are playing around hazards, do not think about hitting the hazard, it will cause problems, instead focus on the target you're aiming for. There are tons more tips out there, but these are what I'm working on at the moment.
