  1. 6200 is my go to yardage. I played in Chicago last week. Played the Glen Club and Cog Hill #4. Mistakenly played 6600 at glen and appropriately played closer to 6k at Cog. Had much more fun at Cog. Granted, I think cog is just an easier course than Glen, but yardage could definitely be a factor in my judgment. Give me 6200 yards all day and every day.
  2. If Day wins one more time + the fedex cup, it'll be TOUGH to choose between he and Spieth for PotY. 2 majors + 2 random wins + 2 top 5s in majors = 1 major + 1 top 5 + 1 top 10 (can he get something for battling vertigo?) + 1 WGC + 1 random win + 2 Playoff wins. I call the 2 top 5s in majors a wash due to the vertigo, I think 1 WGC + 2 playoff wins = 1 major. It's Spieth by a head at this point in time, but if Day wins the Fedex Cup, it goes to 50/50.
  3. watching Bubba, it's easy to see how he sets up for a draw/fade. Do other players, particularly players who really just play the ball one way, set up for that ball flight? Zach Johnson, for example, plays a draw predominantly, is his body set up to do that? I know there's lots of talk about his grip. Currently, I try to set up square to the target. If I'm square to the target, in theory, I should be trying to hit a straight ball, which I kind of am. A well struck ball typically will draw or push draw, but I'll see straight, some times fades. Should I set up more to favor one ball flight or the other? Is that what others/pros do? Actually, set up for the shot they want rather than a "natural" result of their swing mechanics being a draw/fade?
  4. glad bill was in office, but very likely he would not have been had Ross Perot not entered that race.
  5. yea, but Tiger, excluding 7, is throwing darts; he needs to score today.
  6. uh oh, in trouble on the 7th
  7. tiger hitting the ball much better today, but not putting as well.
  8. Going to be in Chicago 9/3. Any locals interested in a round at Cog Hill #4? I can tee off around 1:30-2pm.
  9. this thread is helpful. It seems like 32 putts is an average putter? I'm at 32.4 over the last 5 and 34.2 over last 20, so it does confirm I'm a below avg putter, but maybe not as bad as I thought. Even getting to avg wouldn't do that much for my cap. How much does difficulty of the greens play a role in the stats? I think the greens I play are fairly simple;most putts are pretty straight and not a ton of undulation. PGA players spend half an hour (more?) before rounds practicing their putting; how much does that improve their putting stats? Should I expect to be near their avg considering I rarely practice putting before I tee off? Or would the difficulty of the greens they play outweigh the benefits of calibrating before teeing off? How often do you all change your stroke round to round? I had, what felt like, a poor putting round saturday, and when I got home, started trying different setups/grips. My issue is starting the putt on line.
  10. this is the crux of it. The players care more, their actions/words reflect how much they care, so the majors are a bigger deal. PGA is actually becoming my favorite. PGA's claim going forward should be: we're going to play the absolute best courses and make them tough, but fair. That's what they seem to be doing and I think it's working. When I watch the PGA , I say, more than any other, that's a course I'd LOVE to play. US Open doesn't do that for me b/c the course looks impossible and the wind at the Open scares me. Augusta is a pipe dream, so I'm almost getting turned off by the exclusivity.
  11. I would never sponsor jeff overton; he's so sloppy looking, he makes the brands he is wearing look sloppy.
  12. looks like Tiger Woods has arrived at Quicken Loans
  13. I don't see Tiger out there; I just see some guy named Eldrick Woods.
  14. much better; once I started averaging 8-10 GIRs, I realized how poor of a putter I was/am. Broke 80 for the first time yesterday (78 on course rated 70) and really could've shot around +1 had I not missed 5 putts totaling 25 feet. My 3 wood off of the tee is a real weapon since I'm no longer afraid of shots 185 yards and in. I'm confident I'll be on or around the green from those distances now. Also, I learned the desert rule isn't a real rule and that's improved by course management a ton. Finally, knowing my 50% distances (58 degree through 9-iron) has been critical; I can get it close a lot more often now. Favorite shot yesterday was a 110 yard half PW. Stuck it to 2 feet.
  15. Finally, Finally, Finally I broke 80. My wife and daughter have been in a couple of hours up the road for most of the summer, which has given me extensive time to practice during the week. They're back for good this weekend, so I really needed to, finally, break 80. And, it happened!!!!
  16. Wow, career grand slam is a bigger story than the grand slam; wow; that's, that's, that's.....sigh. I'm with turtleback " We have now reached the point where reasonability has gone out the window and there is no point in continuing."
  17. except TST was in alignment with the rest of the media in not claiming Rory was going for 3rd leg of the "grand slam." Your staff members did not cover Rory's attempt at the Masters as going for the 3rd leg of the slam, which should have gotten significantly more coverage than "career grand slam." I think we all agree a career grand slam should not be in the same discussion with a Grand Slam or a Tiger Slam. There is media (TST included) consensus: Rory was not going for the Grand Slam and Jordan was. TST can be changing its mind, which is fine, state it as such. TST wants to change the definition of Grand Slam to winning 4 majors in a row, again state it as such.
  18. Game. Set. Match. Turtleback (and jgreen85).
  19. I don't see why that's a problem. A guy can have 50, 100, 200 double eagles, but can never claim a "hole in one." It is what it is. I also doubt anyone would dispute that achievement is miles better than the Grand Slam.
  20. and some in this thread have argued the Tiger Slam is even harder than the Grand Slam.
  21. hmm, I feel like I put forth the same arguments as tutleback, but he got all of the credit. meh, w/e. Glad to see some are seeing the light. The Mcilroy example is perfect and I'm annoyed I didn't see it. I do follow golf now as opposed to during Tiger's attempts and the other historical examples turtleback provided, which certainly added significant heft to OUR argument :). I don't recall anyone claiming Rory was going for the "Grand Slam;" only that he had the opportunity to complete the career grand slam at a very young age. Whereas everyone was exclaiming Jordan had the opportunity to get the 3rd.
  22. problem with golf HOF is that there standards were too low for a long time. I think 3-4 majors 10+ victories and 30 top 5s or something. Guys can play golf for so long. Extra value for top 5s in majors. Bottom line, there are a lot of people in golf HoF that shouldn't be.
  23. I used to disagree with this, but have found it to be true. Also, the provisional is "free practice."
  24. I agree with this. My club uses a "desert rule" during tournament play (desert is a lateral hazard). When I practice, I play USGA rules and treat desert as just desert and typically a ball in to the desert is effectively OB. Shot 82 under the tournament rules, which would've been an ~86 or higher under USGA rules. I won my flight quite easily with those 4 extra strokes. In talking with guys after the tourney most of them play their casual rounds using the desert rule.
  25. Why this hang up on "calendar year"? Who is arguing "calendar year" is definitive in this? "Calendar year" is simply used to distinguish the traditional Grand Slam from the Tiger Slam. I think the Grand Slam is the Masters -> US Open -> The Open -> The PGA - in that order. Why? Because the Masters is the first major of the Season! The Season's first major. Can't birdie them all if you don't birdie the first. If one birdies 2 through 18 and then plays #1 again and birdies it, did he birdie all the holes in a round? Damn impressive, but he did not! Also funny the rules/handicap purists are 100% against "breakfast balls," but meh, the grand slam watch starts whenever someone wins 1 major.
