In 1990, I was playing a round in Italy at the Marco Simone C.C. (near Rome)
by myself.
In front of me, there was a foursome of old, rich and snobby club members.
It was during a weekday and usually local rules require smaller group to pass
larger groups.
These guys were not allowing me to pass for any reasons, and, since I look
Asian, they thought I could not speak Italian (I won't put the details of their
comments as I don't want to offend anyone, but let's just say their
comments were far away to be politically correct!)
Anyway, at the sixth hole, because of the design of the course, I ended up
to be right in front of them on the tee box. They looked each other and one
of them said: "what should we do? should we make the "bum" pass?" One of
them looked at me and arrogantly said: "you!....go!"
I raised my hand as a sign of appreciation but I did not say a word and I
acted as I was really a foreigner.
Well, I guess it was frustration of waiting behind or feel for revenge on their
comments, so I concentrated and committed a lot on that driver shot.
When I hit it, I hit it so straight, so hard and so long that they were all
astonished and one of them was mumbling "wow"...
it was an uphill par 4 - 400 yards, and I hit driver and wedge, so
I must have hit a 300+ yard driver!)
After the shot, I looked at them and with a smile I said in perfect Italian:
"The 'Bum'... thanks you all for your generosity!"
I will never forget their embarassed faces....
Well, that was definitely one of my best golf moments ever!
