Driver Shaft to lower ball flight
Aggie25 replied to green6767's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yeah, I would listen to Erik. I don't know the guy but he seems to know what he's talking about. He should run a website and give people advice on their golf game. Oh wait...... -
Weather is the biggest factor for me. I love to walk but the Texas heat doesn't cooperate this time of year. The winter and spring is great to walk though. I focus better while walking but I also do better after a bad shot when I'm able to "walk it off." I brood for the first half of the walk but then I settle in and get back to business. One important issue that hasn't been mentioned is that good shoes make a big difference. If you're going to walk, put some extra $$ into some decent shoes. Your feet won't get tired nearly as fast.

How Much are your Balls Worth?
Aggie25 replied to iacas's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I look for "recycled" golf balls on the internet. The top quality ones look and feel the same as brand new ones from the store. At a buck a ball, it's hard to beat. -
Go play a Par 3 course. You might even break seventy.
-
I use brand new shiny pennies. I'm too cheap to risk losing a quarter.

From 2iron to hybrid.. com'on, everyone's doing it..
Aggie25 replied to Gregormendel's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Like everyone always ends up saying: Find what works and stick with it. Hybrids are so popular because the long irons don't work for so many people. -
You'll want standard bounce or high bounce if you have a higher handicap. The low bounce is for players that know how to tell the club what to do and it actually does it. You want the advantage of the club doing more of the work for you.

Eldrick hasn't had to give up his Scotty but he's an exception to a lot of rules.

I love my Cobra SS-I irons. Feel great and are forgiving when I need it. They have a thin profile and I like how they address the ball. I don't like the fat, wide soles on the newer Cobras, Callaways and various other makers.

I'm a believer in the Bridgestone e6. Once your golf buddies get past the obvious jokes of "uh oh, did you have a blow out over there?" when you get stuck in the rough, they like them too after they try them out. $25/box for a 3 piece ball is hard to beat.

The 905R is a great driver. I found a used one at Golfsmith for $120. It has a great sound and feel. I played a couple of rounds with it but missed the draw bias of my F Speed. I sold it to one of my golf buddies (10 hc) and the only way I'll get it back from him is to pry it from his cold, dead hand. With a 8 hc, you should be able to bomb it and work the ball pretty well.

A 5 Wood and 2 Hybrid will give similar results. If you love your Heavenwood, look into/experiment with a 1 (14*), 2 (17*), or 3 (20*). They're just about the same lofts as the standard woods these guys are recommending.

How much does attitude play in your putting Game?
Aggie25 replied to Focused8's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
You also have to include experience in there. I'd say "half of putting is 90% mental" which would leave you 5% for experience. (Sorry for Yogi Berra/math nerd humor). There's a lot to be said for knowing how to read the breaks and "picturing" the putt (Tiger's strategy from what I've heard). I upgraded my putter but didn't see improvement until I started understanding the contours of the green. -
I saw a dramatic improvement from 30 yards in when I bought my lob wedge. As a high handicapper, my second shot does not always end up on the green on par 4s. I need something that can get me close for a high percentage putt to save par. The lob works for me (I've even gotten a birdie with it: A blind squirrel can eventually find a nut). I do have to practice with it a lot to figure out what I can do with it. When I was using a sand wedge for the same shots I would either be too timid and blade the ball or be too aggressive and let her rip over the green. I say get a cheap used titleist vokey or cleveland 588 to see how it works.

Plastic or Wood Tees? Something Else?
Aggie25 replied to PutterHead's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was using the brush tees up until recently. They're great right out of the package but after a round, maybe 2, the bristles start to get messed up. They have the special storage tube that helps realign the bristles but its only delaying the inevitable. My driving accuracy falls off the more worn the tee becomes. At two bucks a pop, it became about the money. I bought a 75 pack of the zero friction tees and haven't looked back. I've played the last 3 rounds with the same tee. My golfing buddies get a little impatient when I can't find the tee but they can wait. -
I suggest eBay too. I won a set of refurbished irons and only paid 200 bucks after shipping. First I went to several golf stores and tried out the irons (used and new) in their demo areas. Then I went home and searched on eBay for the ones I liked most. I say go with buyers who have good pictures that back up what they say about the clubs. You can take a chance but I'd rather pay 10 more bucks and know what I'm getting. This link will come in handy to let you know what you should expect to pay: http://valueguide.pga.com/ If I was in your situation, and it sounds like I was two years ago, I would look at Cobra. They're all about forgiveness, especially the SS-I.

I found my set of 588 wedges at a store closeout sale on the used rack at 60% off so I might've went a little crazy and got 3. My gap (49*) and lob (60*) wedges are chrome but my sand (54*) is the unfinished Raw Tour Grind. There's no difference in performance or feel to me. I love all of them but the RTG with the rusty finish looks the coolest. It just stands out in my bag (which makes a little faster to find too when playing ready golf). I made my selections based on the condition of the clubs available, but if I was buying new I would go with the RTG or gunmetal simply based on looks. I found this article to be helpful: http://thesandtrap.com/bag_drop/is_rust_a_must/

I work for a construction company in Dallas. I'm on the project management staff. I wish it gave more time for golf in the middle of the week.

I'm too young to remember Jack at his best but that's not my main reason for voting for Tiger. With the "arms race" you have today with all the new equipment getting better and better, the field is very strong. If you take these guys' talent levels and give them a little bit of an edge, it would seem they have a realistic chance at winning every week. Tiger has consistently dominated that field and only moderately stepped up the technology he uses. His performance this past year at the British Open speaks for itself. I'd be screwed if the biggest club I could use was my 4 iron.
