I play the 710 AP2's and really loved how they felt when I compared them to the R9 TP and Nike split-cavity irons. I would say they feel a bit heavier towards the sole than most irons but that's what I love about them. They feel so smooth when you hit them clean and real workable. For $400, that's a great deal. I would even consider it at $500

How often do you use your 4 iron?
redranger replied to anotherday's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I had my 4 iron in my bag until I got a 3 wood. I can hit my 3/4 iron fine, but I just figured I never really needed it. I have a lot times where I have to hit 5 iron or 3 iron. I keep my 3 iron for tight par 4s or long par 3's. I took my 4 iron out at the beginning of this season and I've never missed it. Also, I play at a bunch of different courses so it's not like I'm playing the same course over and over where the yardages are the same. -
I started hitting golf balls when I was 7. I think I started to go play on the course when I was like 9 or so. My parents loved to play and made me go play on the course. I hated to go out and play because I couldn't replicate my shots on the range to the course. Therefore I hate golf and only played in high school because my parents wanted me to. If I could do it all over again, I'd tell myself that it's just a game and not to get too frustrated. I don't know if that would have helped since I was a stubborn child and used to having things come easily. If I had loved golf like I do now, things would be different. I'd also tell myself to spend more time on the putting/chipping green.

Upgrading to ProV1...?
redranger replied to MartinVR 182's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I don't know exactly where, but I read that chewing up the cover a bit doesn't really affect the performance of the ball. In fact I played a 2 day tournament where I used the same Pro V1x and chewed that thing up and saw no decreased spin or distance. -
Cannot stop pulling/hooking with my driver!
redranger replied to Dr. Slice's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I had a pretty similar problem, low hooks, but I had some nasty hooks/pulls. I would suggest trying to slice or fade it at the range. Make it feel like you're swinging away from the ball and see if you can slice/fade the ball. It is most likely a swing path that is too inside out. Also, trying to fade/slice will help you keep your hands from turning over too fast since you have to hold the face open as in come outside in on it. This is what worked for me, hopefully it works for you. -

Orange County Golf/Tustin Ranch
redranger replied to redranger's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I definitely meant the coming weekend, not this easter weekend. What kind of sites are we talking about? Thanks -
Hi Everyone. I'm in OC for 2 weeks for work and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for golf this weekend. I've been looking at the twilight rate at Tustin Ranch, and from the reviews, it sounds pretty reasonable. Does anyone know if it would be easy to get on as a single that day and what the pace of play is like there? Also, if anyone has any suggestions for other courses it would be much appreciated. I don't really want to spend more than $100 for 18, but maybe that's too much to ask in OC

Paiute - Snow Mountain course is great. I played Silverstone as well and thought it wasn't too bad.

Has anyone ever seen this (Washington state golf)
redranger replied to calvie7's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I play at Harbour Pointe all the time. It's on a natural wetland type of terrain so their drainage in the winter in terrible. Great course in the spring and summer. I noticed they put those pebbles (mainly on the 1st hole) a few months back. I'm pretty sure this is a temporary fix. It's funny that you mention this because I was thinking the same thing and I also have a set of AP2's. I just hit them off the fairway and I didn't notice any marks on my irons actually. They are relatively small pebbles and I don't think they will damage your irons much. Maybe it's because I take a divot when after I hit the ball. As far as I know, this is the only course that does that. -
40 and sunny is not uncomfortable at all. 30 and windy is kind of harsh, but if it's not raining a lot, or frozen on the course, it's all good to play up here. I play with a group of 12~15 on Tuesdays (depending on how many show up on that day) and we go out in foursomes to play. As long as there's not snow people come out to play.

The clubs still look nice. Nicer than most out there at least. Kind of seems weird to have such a "modern" name and font on a classic muscle back type of irons. As long as they hit as nice as the Prototypes, then whatever. I did think that saying that the Protos were limited was just a marketing gimmick, but I guess not?

I almost purchased one last year until I heard the 910's were coming out. I hit the 909 F2 15.5 and 13.5 at the range. They both had the stock Adila Voodoo shafts, which I actually like. It seems like most people aren't fans. A little too much spin, but w/e. The feel of the club is amazing and at impact it is smooth and responsive. I had never hit a fairway wood that felt so nice. Writing about it makes me think I should just go get a 909F2 and save myself $100.

I'm 22 and I've always carried. My parents are in their early 50's and they push. I get jealous sometimes not because carrying is hard, but having a push cart gives you so much more convenience. They have an umbrella holder (it rains on and off in the fall when I play up here in Seattle), little compartments to put your cell phone or gps device in and just allows you to carry a bigger bag and carry more stuff. However, I do like carrying because I have more freedom of movement. I don't have to necessarily leave my bag off the tee box and it's just easier to get around on the course, especially around the greens.

Jman, I don't think you should limit yourself from playing certain courses at certain times because of your handicap. Statistically they are way more 18 and up handicappers than singles and as long as you're good company, playing at a good pace and have fun you wouldn't ruin anyone's day. I'm one summer away from being a single handicap and I usually play with my brother who's a 8.5. We've been matched up with high-handicappers a bunch of times and as long as they play at a good pace and are good sports (which works both ways) about everything then it's fine. What I hate is people who lose a ball every other hole and take wayyyyy too long looking for their ball. What's funny to me is that a lot of high handicappers I've played with have clubs that are obviously not meant for them and/or play Pro V1's...I don't understand why players who lose more than 5 balls in a typical round are playing such expensive golf balls. I understand it's the one of the best balls out there, but come on man! Play some cheaper balls and then you wouldn't feel bad spending less time looking for it Sorry, just my ranting because I can't afford to play Pro V1's all the time.

On a par 71 I shot 79 today and 76 yesterday. Finally started hitting some greens in regulation and putts started going in. I was bombing my driver the past two days as well. I'm a 10.6 handicap so shooting this well two days in a row is really good for me. I'm hoping this is the beginning of consistently lower scores!

Do you match name brands in your bag?
redranger replied to jmanbooyaa's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have all Titleist clubs except my putter. My bag is Titleist, but that kind of came by chance not so much a conscious decision. Clothes I'm whatever, but I do like the Titleist fitted mesh caps. I hate my hair sticking out of the velcro or adjustable straps. Every time I go out to buy new clubs I try a bunch of different brands, but Titleist just seems to give me the best feel and matches up with my game/style. I do think I'm becoming more brand loyal, but whatever. -
This summer I've lowered my handicap 10 strokes and I've gained about 25 yard on all my clubs from last summer. I know it's not really a distance thing, but I have been thinking about playing in windy conditions and how it will affect me. I have been working on punching the balls to get that low stinger, but i can't seem to keep it real low. Something to work on I guess. It's weird because my friend who's a scratch golfer told me that he loved my swing with the driver and hybrid, because of my release but with my irons and wedges I release early and flip it up. Also, Open-Faced Club SandWedge, I was thinking the same thing, whether or not it would limit me from consistently hitting in the 70's in the near future. The higher I hit them, the softer the landing, but am I sacrificing spin? If I want to get down into the low single digits is this something I NEED to fix?

I've always been a high ball hitter with my irons, but lately I've been wondering if that's a bad thing. I seriously hit my 5 iron as high as most people's 7 irons and similarly with my other irons. I also don't make divots or any big ones usually because I tend to pick the ball up and release early (causing the high ball flight). I hit it fairly long (in my opinion). My 3 iron right now goes about 230yd, and 56 wedge is about 120, so it's not necessarily costing me distance. Do you guys think that hitting a ball high is necessarily a bad thing? I'm wondering about things like distance, spin and accuracy. Thanks.

Newcastle isn't worth playing at $100 even. Maybe $60. Ridiculous. But hey, the cart's included ;)

Changing Putters: Good Idea or Bad?
redranger replied to redranger's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks guys. I will definitely go try some putters and look into some older SC's. I didn't know people had so many putters. Hopefully I just pick one putter and work on the game and not the equipment after this one. Not enough cash as a student to buy a new putter too often. :) -
Hey guys, I've been using a Taylor Made Rossa putter for about a year now. No real complaints about it, except I don't really like the aesthetics of it. I bought it since it had decent feel and it was on sale. Lately, I've been thinking about buying a Scotty Cameron after I putted with my mom's. The feel was undeniably softer and I just felt more confident with it. I know some people claim that changing putters is a bad idea if you've already developed a feel with your current putter since it'll just mess around with it. What do you guys think?

Titleist 909F2 going left everytime
redranger replied to Chubbs's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I would say overswinging out of excitement =D. I got a 17* 909H recently and I hit every straight at the range and my 17* had a more pronounced draw than other clubs. On the course, I was hooking/hard drawing it. I myself have a 909D2 with the voodoo shaft on both clubs, and only struggled with the hybrid. When I demoed the 909F2, and didn't notice a hook/draw bias. I just realized that I needed to swing easy again and concentrate on just making a smooth swing and I am just killing it down narrow fairways now. Your handicap is an 8, so really you should have no problem hitting the club (or most stiff shaft clubs) especially since you hit basically the same shafted hybrid club fine. If all else fails, go see a club fitter? -
I think you did a VERY smart thing cutting your driver to 44". A lot of golfers think that the longer the driver, the longer the distance, which can be very much the opposite. For most people, shorter drivers will give you a more consistent impact and control. Standard is 45.5" or something like that but I hear even Tiger played a 44.5" driver in his prime. I play a 46", but honestly, it's because it fits me and that's the key. Getting a driver that fits. Also, there's a reason why distance is such a big deal in golf. If you can hit your driver 240~250 straight on a 400 yard par four, you can grab a shorter/mid iron to reach 2 for a par. If you hit your 3 wood straight 210~220, you have to basically hit another 3 wood or 5 wood to get on 2. The pure percentages that you will get a GIR is much higher with a good driver shot + short iron than a 3 wood + wood/iron. Lastly, I think hitting a great drive long and straight is one of the most satisfying and refreshing shots in golf. Even if you're playing terrible a great drive can be a real confidence booster.
