Why do you change your driver?
mrobbie replied to titaniummd's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I changed from my 905R cos I could do nothing but slice with it. Yes, I could have worked on swing to correct the issue, but I found that going back to a TM R7 driver sorted it (had one before the 905 but it broke - 905R was an exchange from the shop) I love the R7 Superquad, which was on the more draw setting (both heavier weights towards the heel - 12g-12g-1g-1g) and this straightened the slice. I was finding recently after a lot of practice that the srives were beginning to pull. Changed the weights yesterday to 12g-1g-12g-1g so on the draw setting and its made a bit of improvement. Straighter with only a slight draw, and a lower trajectory so getting a little bit of run on the ball now. Prob the same overall distance though. So, I change when I discover something just won't work for me. Or, when I have had something for a long time - I'm not a regular equipment changer though. -
What custom length irons are you using?
mrobbie replied to JYB's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Cutom fitted Titleist 755 irons; the custom measurements were standard loft & lie, standard length and reg flex tri-spec steel. So they are custom for me, and standard for anyone wanting to buy them down the line. -
YS-6+ vs Aldila VS Proto 65 for driver
mrobbie replied to hrspear's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
from the Titleist site, the spec seems quite different between the 2. For info, I found the YS6+ in my old 905R to be quite boardy in feel (felt stiffer than a 'stiff') -
keep your eye on ebay... there are still the occasional new v-steel getting listed. Check the US and UK sites - UK would be cheaper postage to you I would guess. Your other option is to go with a 5 wood that has a 'standard' length shaft - the new burners are longer to generate more clubhead speed, and send the ball further. This was a consideration when I was looking for my 3; I didn't want one that was close to the distance of my driver, and bridged the gap between 5 wood and driver. But, a hybrid may be an idea - something around 18 degrees such as Callaway X or Cobra Baffler Pro
-
ditto BS on distance - I read in a golf mag recently where Darren Clarke (Irish pro) was talking about what's in his bag... his 13 deg Taylormade Burner TP is always in his bag as it goes 260 yards. He's no small guy, and his 13 deg 3 wood goes as long as your 5 wood Anyway, distance aside, you don't need an excuse to go and get it. If you find that when playing you have a shot that you wish you had a 3 wood, then you need it. If you get round the course and are happy with the 5 wood then no need. For this 250+ yard shot, I'd probably use your 5 wood as it goes about 260

Had a pretty awesome 1st 7 holes, 8 & 9 were scrappy and finished the front 9 with 18 points. Back 9 went terrible, and somehow scrambled another 12 points. All in, 30 points today, 29 yesterday so handicap +0.2 for the weekend so 13.0. Putter was sizzling hot though! My driver is normally a fairly safe bet for me, as have been striking it superbly for the last 3 or 4 weeks. This weekend, couldn't hit my driver at all on either round. Decided after the round today to have some range time to work out what was wrong; smashed 20 balls one after the other perfectly down the range. No idea what I did differently, but seems to be working again. Callaway Fusion 3 wood had its debut today. Did its job well.

Well, after my trial of the Callaway x and Ping G10 yesterday, I stumbled across a Callway Fusion 3 wood with the stock Aldila NVS shaft (stiff). After a few hits I knew it was better than the others - much more suited to my swing and was straighter, more consistent and a lovely trajectory. Its now in the bag, and the par 5's are becoming reachable in 2 now...
-
I hit the Callaway X 15 deg (stock stiff) and the Ping G10 15.5 deg (prolaunch red) today... Was not a fan of the callway - felt like I caught it fat too often and flight was high & right, which was a surprise. Ping had a nicer flight, perhaps a bit too low but was more consistent. I think this club would be nicer with the stock TFC shaft.

I have seen and heard a lot of people doing this; 4w and the 21 hybrid

Distance between 2 hybrid and 7 wwod
mrobbie replied to steve617's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I thought a 2 iron was closer to a 5 wood? You read of a lot of pros that alternate between 2 iron and 5 wood depending on course conditions -
Should I keep my Callaways or switch to Titleist
mrobbie replied to Gone.Golfing's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
is there something in your contract with Titleist that states you need to play their irons?? Personally, if I wanted an all Titleist set, I'd have gone AP2 2 months ago rather than Callaway... I'm guessing the Callaway are a decent iron, so why not stick with them if you hit them well. If there are problems, change to what works best, not necessarily what matches the rest of your clubs. -
Which loft do you play and suggest?
mrobbie replied to SpacklersEdge's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I play a 9.5 degree Superquad, with the RE*AX stiff shaft (mid tip) Love it to bits, and the club is on the "more draw" setting which gives me only a very slight draw (I have a natural fade). Flight is very high, and distance, although very long, is all carry. I think if I changed to the normal "draw" setting, the trajectory would be lower, and more roll, but on the courses and weather conditions I am currently playing, carry works well. -
TaylorMade Burner Steel v Burner TP (fairway)
mrobbie replied to mrobbie's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
nobody tried both? I've not managed to find them anywhere to try them out as they are now previous models... -
Same boat - have not played a 3 wood in about 5 years now, but courses I am playin gnow have plenty opportunity for a 3 wood to come into use (5 wood often too short for a par 5, or too safe on a par 4 off the tee) From what I have seen... (but not tried) Callaway X 2008 - very nice looking club at address. Good price. Ping G10 - sits lovely and square at address, choice of shaft options. Callaway FT - different looking to any other Callaway wood as has a traditional looking hosel compared to the usual S2H2 equipment. Taylormade Burner (2007) - I have seen this in the normal and TP versions. TP has a smaller head and heavier shaft, which I preferred. Longer shaft than most worries me as I don't want a 3 wood knocking up near driver length, I want a decent gap club. Titleist 906F4 - lovely to look at, and currently at good prices. My concern is that I sliced the shit out fo everything I hit with my old 905R driver, and concerned that the fairways react the same way. (would love a 906F4 3 wood (15.5 deg) and a 19 deg 585H to replace my 5 wood) From what I have hit; My old Wilson 1200 GE - Shit, just plain shit. Can't hit it for love nor money. Shaft is all over the place. A mates Cobra - ugle head that looks dented - new Cobras look the same too IMHO A mates Callaway Big Bertha 2007 - pretty nice, crisp feel. Ugly alignment aid when looking at it in the pro shop, but in actual use, you don't notice it. It was a reg flex when I need stiff, so resulted in a high right, but with good distance. I am swaying towards Callway X, Titleist 906F4 or Ping G10... All in all, there is a huge choice out there, each reacting and feeling different to the other. As I have seen, the only way to make a decision is to get out there and try the clubs - not just off a mat, actually on the course to check off a tee, tight lie, rough etc. Hopefully you got some help from that ramble!! Mike

Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?
mrobbie replied to JYB's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
another dozen Titleist PTS Carry... these things are fantastic! And there was a sale on in the shop, so got them for a 'bargain' 112 dirhams = about $30 :( Think I'll splsh out big next time I am in the shop and go with a new glove - humidity ruined the current one - they only last about 5 rounds here! Golf equipment is too $$$ here!! A few 3 woods with a discount that almost had me tempted, but still about double the US prices... $320 for a Ping G10 or Callaway FT / $255 for Titleist 904 or Callaway X 2008... Think I'll hold off until I get back to the UK! -
reshafting my wedges (vokey 56.10 and 60.04)
mrobbie replied to BigDaddy_Sean's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
blocking approach shots right is fairly common - I think when striking down on the ball, hands often drop too quick and the club pulled through, leaving the face open and coming accross the ball - resulting in high right -
I have to say, getting my old 64 deg wedge out of my bag was a god send - stuck in a 60 vokey as a replacement. I find the 60 more versatile. The Vokey goes 85 yards with a strong swing. The 64 went about 60, and I was prone to knifing it. From 50/60 yards, the last thing I wanted was a full swing. Much better to go 3/4 with the 60. It still flies high, esp with the face open, and the grooves mean it stops quick. If you are looking for control round the green, a good 60 wedge will do more for spin than an average 64 will. How about stick a new 60 in the bag, and have the 58 bent back to 56, to give you 47, 52, 56 and 60 - roughly 4 degs between each wedge

Nike Distance Straight vs. Titleist DT Carry balls
mrobbie replied to TigerCurtis333's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm using the DT Carry also (12.8 handicap). I found that a ProV1 was spinning too much on the soft greens over here, and could see little in performance comparing the DT Carry and the NXT Tour. I like the little/no roll that I get off these, as I have more control of where the ball will finish. Off the driver, I find that the high & long carry has added a few yds. Well worth the money for them, and will be buying more when these run out... But will return to ProV1 when I am back playing the firmer greens in Scotland. -
Problems with the Taylor Made r7 SuperQuad 460 cc...
mrobbie replied to DGart09's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Absolutely no problems with mine to date. Bought it in April/May and its used in 5 or 6 rounds a week so its getting a good testing. I don't think would have gone with an X stiff shaft - I moved from a 905R with a stiff YS6 and agree the RE*AX stiff feels less boardy, but find it to be just spot on. I hit the ball higher with the Superquad than with the 905R (both 9.5 degree) which is probably due to being on the 'more draw' setting - plan to change to the lower draw setting as an experiment to see if I can gain a few yds with the lower trajectory. -
Anybody else think oilcan Vokeys are ugly?
mrobbie replied to GaijinGolfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The look of a brand new oil can Vokey is IMHO great, but when you see a well used one that has rusted, I hate them. That was why I went with the Tour Chrome finish instead - it stays looking nicer for longer. -
I find that I can hit a 5 iron about 185 yds, and a 4 iron 190 and a 3 iron about 195... These distance gaps are far closer than any of my other irons. Yes, I can on occasion flush a 3 iron 220 yds, but more often than not it will fall short of 200 To me this tells me I am not striking these irons properly, and a hybrid may help me. My only consolation is that I love my 5 wood and it can go 230 with a fair old smack, or 200 choked down a bit. A 19 or 21 deg hybrid may fit nicely in my bag to replace the 3 iron, but I don't see myself having a desperate need due to the versatility of the 5 wood. You should always go with what you are most comfortable with at the end of the day - If you don't like hybrids then stick to the long irons - or, you could always get the full set of irons and then you have the option to alternate with hybrids as needed.

I'm on the hunt for a 3 wood, and have seen these Taylormade Burner Steel 15* 3 wood Taylormade Burner TP 14.5* 3 wood From what I can see on the TM website, the differences between the 2 are pretty obvious; TP version has no draw bias, smaller head and heavier shaft. Anyone hit the 2 side by side and have comments on the performance of both? I preferred the look and weight of the TP model, but have not had a hit of either. I'm yet to actually try them out on the range. I guess the other option is the Tour Burner that has recently come out, but its a bit more $$$ Cheers

If you had to choose one company?
mrobbie replied to Wiserrr's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I used to say hands down Titleist. I was almost there, having the irons, driver, wedges and ball, and was all set to pull the trigger on a 3 & 5 904F2. But after a particular struggle with the 905R driver not working well for me (constant slice) it got me thinking… I changed to a TM driver after having a particularly good spell with an R7 460 before the 905 and am loving it. The TM wedges look & feel fantastic (although I still think the Vokey wedges still take the #1 position), as do the TP balls. Not too familiar with the irons though. If there was a new equivalent of the R7 fairways I'd have them straight in my bag - not overly keen on what they have out at the moment in terms of fairways. Instead, I think there will be Callaway X fairways appearing shortly in my bag… If I had to choose, I honestly don't know - not Titleist, unless the 907 woods were easier for me to hit straight, probably TaylorMade, maybe Callaway, even at a long shot Ping. It caught my eye the number of pros that played TaylorMade in The Open last weekend… So, there you have it - I couldn’t choose 1 brand! Each have their strong points I guess. -
Help Selecting Callaway 3 Wood
mrobbie replied to Magnum PI's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
that alignment line on the crown of the BB fairways puts me off though. Much prefer the look of the X series fairways -
Mid Hdcp: USE PRO V1!!
mrobbie replied to FlopShotArtist's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've stopped using the ProV1 since arriving in Dubai - greens are very soft here, so you can stop anything on them. The ProV1 was getting too much spin and zipping back off greens. Changed to the NXT Tour which was much better. Last week as an experiment I got a dozen of the new PTS Carry - these are fantastic. Longer drives and still getting them to stop on greens. Even a well struck 5 iron will stop within around 3 feet of its pitch mark. When I go back to play in the UK I'll no doubt return to ProV1, but for now, the additional cost of them is not worth it as they actually cost me strokes on the course.
