on the Uniflex shaft....I hate it! I like a stiff shaft, not due to my swing speed, but my poor tempo. Uniflex, I was whipping it left and right. Stiff, at least I know where the club head is at.

Answering your question about getting better: Write down on your scorecard what club you hit and what happened to it. Obviously, some kind of dots and stars for shorthand. What I quickly found is that 4-9 times a round I take more than one shot into the green with a wedge. I either chunk it, overshoot, or short and have to take a 2nd shot. Try it, you’ll find out pretty quick what you need. As far as the topping I noticed when first started doing this, I stopped that when I relaxed and quit trying to kill it. Happy Holidays.

Yah, I rotate a lot of stuff between my Driver and 5i: Callaway X 3w, Cleveland 4w, Titleist 21 909H, Nickent 3i Ironwood hybrid, this funky early metal 5w with a steel shaft. Totally whimsical, 3w about 220, I hit all about the rest about the same distance (about 175-195). That said, when I finally got my wedge gaps down, game became a lot more steady: Mizuno JPX 50 Supposed to be more forgiving, which implies less of a shot maker. Cast, not forged. Best wedge I’ve ever had. I do everything with it. Vokey 56 sand wedge with 14 degrees bounce, yah, launch that whole damn bunker in the air. 60, for the lob and tight troubles. Full swing: 50 goes 75, 56 goes 60, 60degrees goes 40-45. All adjustable by angle of attack and swing speed.

Re: Gonna finally take some lessons (cheap!). Some guys give lessons for less when it gets slow in the winter. Wait for it.

Have to agree with Plasma327: Fitting and buying appropriate stuff will help you enjoy the game more than anything else. Worth the money. When I first started, I went to the used bins, tried everything at a very low cost, probably at the total of a full bag of new stuff. I found out thru experimentation that shaft & weight is probably more important than the head manufacturer. Since long drives are your game strength, it’s a really good place to start your investment.

Agree, for starting up a ball is a ball. I think I bought a dozen ProV’s when I first started, going to my friend’s CC and I just sliced every one into the woods in that round. Nice spin... Once you can hit the fairway, or at least not hit into the deep woods, but jsut the rough, you can start concentrating on the feel and flight of ball, and of course the check up, cause you’ve been working on your short game.

Agree. I think it’s actually to your advantage to use the same (type) of ball for a while. You get to know how the ball will behave, off the tee and on approach or wedge shots. Even if you aren’t a consistent ball striker yet.

Compared the 909H to the F in 21 and a 909 in 18(?) maybe on the launch monitor? Ended up going for the 909H 21, but regret not getting that deeper face. Because when Im tired or falling apart, it’s hard to tag that ball! If I’m swinging hard, strong and accurate, damn, it is a sweet club. ******** has many used ones for about 70 bucks and the 910s are about 100, depending on condition.

Not a prob to be a walker, unless lost in the tall grass. Then I just have to man up and drop a ball and take the strokes. I find it’s more enjoyable than making ppl wait on me. And for sure, if one rider hooks and the other slices and your game is on, you are waiting on them. (6900 yards)

I think ppl have alluded to this, but not spoken directly to it: It gets proportionately more difficult and requires more skill to get consistently lower scores. I was hitting in the 110’s, took 5 lessons and was quickly in the 90’s. So I’m straighter and consistent. But now distance? And putting? You watch some TV golf and watch those pro’s drain a 25 footer. More than once a round. Putting definitely requires some time and coaching. So knowledge about the swing and game and your body first, then you get more refined. And really, you know some ppl can’t be refined, lol. I like the line about golf is 90% mental and the other 10% is in your head. Some ppl get low, and then some of those issues definitely come in to play. Fun times, but every once in a while I walk off the course and say “Waht in the hell am I doing here?"

imho...Uniflex are defintely not for everyone. I would recommend getting fitted for shaft and picking that with your preferred irons. My opinion is based on buying about 5 different single irons before buying deciding on an iron set. RAZRBlack came with the Uniflex shaft and I could never hit it consistently, even after a good warm up period on the range. One day I passed it to my friend on the range and he took several swings and was inconsistent and he handed it back and said : “That’ll screw up your swing”.

ARgh. I bought a few irons from sets I was considering buying. Diablo Edge, Cobra s2 Forged, and Razr Black. And I must say that the Razr Black were the most difficult to hit. Probable cause: It’s not the fiddle, it’s the fiddler!!! I have a pretty herky jerky swing and these were left and right and then wow, that was a beautiful shot. But unfortunately, waited too long to decide that and find a deal on a set, so never returned them. Interested in a 3 and 4 iron Razr Black? Uniflex shaft, btw.

Ok, one guy offered what got his tee shot with a driver longer. Has anyone else had a moment in their learning where one thing improved their drives length or accuracy?

Take me a while to digest the physics of that....Probably gong to get fitted as I think I need stiffer shafts in my longer stuff. But I need some kind of metric to judge that by, can't afford too much shaft experimentation

ok, so what are you hitting your 5 iron or 4 iron? I mean, with these distances (210 driver, 135 9i) you should be playing all irons. I mean, I hit my 3 iron 190. Driver, 205. It's just easier to score well with my irons, easier to swing my drivers & hybrids. My question to the more advanced player is: Does this kind of thing balance out as we gain skill, or is it possible the OP and myself are just irons oriented golfers?

Fascinated both by your process and Trevino story! I recently discovered acquired a cobra 3iron with a stiff shaft and suddenly, what do you know, I can hit a fairway with a long club. That's my first insight into shaft flex can really make a difference. I'm curious if you have other flexes or changes to your shafts across your set?

Year and half later, curious how that "break 100" advice panned out?

Just broke 100 for the 1st time today, been playing for about 2 years. I would say you are taking too many lessons in too short a period. I like the idea of practicing the "forms" for golf in slo mo, it really helps me. It takes time to integrate all the thoughts into a smooth flowing swing. Also, video and mirror help a lot. Btw, hit 51 on front 9 today. 44 on back 9. Honestly, fine motor coordination has never been my strong suite. What really helped my game most as of late? Analyzing the types of shots taken during rounds. I realized I tee off ok, hit toward green ok, putt ok, but over do it with chipping, like 2 per hole. As I saw a guy put it here: Get on the green, close to the hole, dont get cute. It takes time for the learning to percolate into reality. Thats just gonna be a long time for some of us.

That is a life lesson indeed.
