Planning a trip that can include a day of golf in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Fl at the end of this month (March). I'll be staying in the Aventura neighborhood. Can you recommend some reasonably priced, good, public courses? Right now, I'm looking at the Plantation Reserve, Hillcrest, and Jacaranda. Thanks!

three excellent choices...Plantation Preserve (not Reserve) is my favorite of the 3....maybe go to Key Biscayne and play Crandon Park..was a former Champions Tour venue..Great views of the city. Miami Dade ownes it and keeps it in good shape. In Broward, down the road from Plantation is Inverrery East...that was the original Jackie Gleason (Honda) site...Fun layout and historic.

If u only have one day...my vote hands down is Crandon Park. have a great trip.

Yeah Crandon Park is great and highly recommended eventhough its $160 for non-Miami residents. One of my favorites is Normandy Shores in Miami Beach (about 15 minutes south of Aventura). A little bit on the pricey side $120/round, but hands down the best greens in Miami.

Of the 3 courses mentioned above, I've only played Hillcrest and I liked it. Narrow fairways and challenging par 4's with crazy dog legs that force you to hit irons off the tee.... something different. I've heard good stuff about Plantation Preserve and hope to make the hike this year. Also, you can find cheap rates for Hillcrest & Jacaranda on golfnow.com.

Thanks for the recommendations. I also have to factor in courses that allow for singles. Right now, I'm shooting for Plantation Preserve in the morning, and Jacaranda in the afternoon...

I played Crandon Park - as a single - when I was there. Just call today - they'll find room for you. Absolutely amazing course. These guys live in Miami and are recommending it over Doral or Biltmore for a reason. Crandon is awesome. Far better over-all scenery than anywhere else there. The course is in great shape - and is a true championship course. You are a 7.3 handicap. If you break 85 you'll be happy. If you play from the tips, you better bring your A game.

FYI Plantation Preserve is on the corner of University and Broward,,,if u go south on University about 2 miles on your right is Grande Oaks..(AKA Bushwood) from Caddyshack. Across the street is Nova University where the Dolphins traning facility and offices are.

Wow, it looks like I'll be dumb to miss out on Crandon... Better make that a must-stop. Now, where should I play my second 18?... :p

You should make Crandon your 2nd 18. Use an easier, cheaper course to polish up.

Closest public course to Crandon is Miami Beach GC about 15-20 minutes away in South Beach... but you're looking at $200/person. You also have Normandy Shores just east of I-95 & 79th st. and International Links of Miami (Melreese) next to Miami International airport which are great tracks too.

Where in Aventura? I work at Turnberry Isle. There is no better golf around than Turnberry but it is $$$$

Our hotel is next door to there, can you hook me up with a discount round? :p I'll play there in the morning, and Crandon in the afternoon.

In good shape, very old school,,,funky design...layup holes, doglegs, lots of canals and big ass lizards, very cool bar overlooking the range. Don't park next to the 18 green,,i hit my own car once!

If that guy can get you on Turnberry for a decent price I'ld go for that over M.shores.

I found Pembroke Lakes that's nearby as well. Any input on this one? Seems reasonably priced, and good layout.

I played there, too (the day after I played Crandon Park). It is $100 even for out of staters. After playing Crandon from the tips - this course was easy. No real trouble. Just a regular round of golf. I had a great time, though.

I was 2 over going into 18 - and overshot the green on my approach - - and like Fatphil said - - my ball ended up in the parking lot. I tripled bogeyed it! To give you an idea of the difference in the courses from the back tees, Check out my GHIN scores posted from each course: AI1/8/10 77 71.2/131 5.0 Miami Shores Country Club AI1/7/10 84 76.5/151 5.6 Crandon Park Golf Course SEVEN strokes higher on Crandon - only 0.6 differential worse than the 77 at Miami Shores...

The course was re-done about 3 years ago and they did a good job, especially the greens. If they cut them down they are extremely difficult to putt. I play PL about once a month (yeah the price is OK) & my only criticism is something they can't change..it's a small piece of property. If you're a big hitter (as I read most guys on this site hit the ball 300) the condos, ponds and canals will eat you up. All in all a very pleasent experience.

If you want to get up to Broward, I still recommend Plantation Preserve or Inverrary East. Don't know what they charge at Inverrary but besides Grande Oaks or Weston Hills (which are private) it's the most historic course in the area. Nicklaus, Kite, Trevino, Weiskoph all won there.

Miami Shores is average at best.... here's my top 5 Miami public / semi-private courses that I've played:

1. Doral Blue 2. Normandy Shores 3. Doral McLean (formerly Silver) 4. Crandon 5. Miami Beach or Doral White.... toss up here

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
