2013 Juneteenth Golf Tourney - Hosted by the City of Texas City

2 posts in this topic

Just a quick note:

Today's tourney was at the beautiful Bayou Golf Course in Texas City, Texas. Lots of wind, but the course is well maintained.

We got rained on 4 times (very heavy rain) but the course sucked down the water like a man dying of thirst. The accomodations of the tourney was pretty good with a tent serving bbq and boudain at the 6th(?) since it seems the 6th was a hole that everyone gets bunched up at (great idea for handling slow play). I went through 4 pairs of soggy socks and lots of beer to survive the round.

I did notice some improvement on my swing, but playing in wet shoes threw me off complete.

Great course to check out and this tourney is a must attend if you are in the Houston-Galveston area around June 19th (Juneteenth).

Good time had by all. It was a 4 man scramble.

BY the way, one team posted a 55 (which is IMPOSSIBLE) . I will post the pic later of the score.

Refresh what I need to do. Some comparisons between those last two drives and the rest of the round.

Good Drives I did the following
I got into a good set up and grip. I made sure I wasn't on my heels. I shortened the swing, swing felt more in control and compact.

      Bad Drives
These drives just felt very fast and out of control. Backswing felt fast. Downswing felt super fast. I was hitting either low on the clubface or low and heel on the clubface. One I almost topped the ball with the heel.

-I am just hitting the heel of the putter a ton. I also apparently can't aim my putter. I keep aiming way right. I just don't feel comfortable making a stroke right now. The putter just feels horrible in my hands right now.

I plan on practicing from now on. I haven't really hit the range in a few months.

Good point on it being up to me to practice what I am taught. One thing I left out above is I have an indoor ( bubble ) driving range just two miles from my house that offer some great rates for practicing and is right on my way home from work which will be a great help.

Golfers see the most benefit from instructors they can talk to easily and get along with; obviously you also want them to be very knowledgeable about the swing.  As such, I'd suggest one of two things 1) take a quick 30min lesson or so from each and see who you like the most / who's philosophy about golf matches yours the closest or 2) just go up to them and talk to them for a bit about lessons and how they approach it.  Keep in mind that taking lessons is great, but it really comes down to you practicing what they teach.  Also, if you are not seeing some type of improvement in a lesson or two, find a new teacher.  Good ones are able to help find results quickly, but as said before, it's up to you to repeat those results as best you can.
