I recently got a set of golf clubs to get back into the game. I purchased them off craigslist from someone locally. Everything I have found on them indicates that they are juniors clubs but they seem to be good for my height (5'10") and the bag and everything seem to be pretty different than the ones I have found on line. Since I cannot find much info on these clubs would that be a sign of them being inferior to starter sets? like wilson and others

My main question is how/when do I know that I am ready for new clubs?

Welcome to the site! I'd avoid starter sets. They tend to be cheap and you want to get out of them relatively soon. Especially woods. I'd recommend putting together a set of used quality clubs from either eBay or the manufacturers' preowned sites like Callaway or Taylormade have. You can get irons from a previous model year or two for really cheap, even in like new condition. It's the way to go and is often as cheap or cheaper than some boxed sets.

I would avoid Craigslist/online sources until you get a better idea of current golf club models.

In your case, you want to hit the clubs in person to make sure you can use them, and like them.

Also, you might take a couple of lessons to get your swing stabilized a little; then, get a basic static fitting: do club length and lie angle match your height and stance, does shaft flex match basic driver speed, is grip the right thickness? The lie angle test involves hitting some balls with the irons to see where the sole of the club makes impact during the swing. A static lie check without hitting a ball doesn't tell you much.

In the early going, you want clubs that won't hurt your game.

Focus, connect and follow through!
