TaylorMade Hybrid Loft Question

I have a question. I saw that taylormade makes 16 degree hybrids--They say they are the equivalent of a 2 iron. I have a set of irons 3-Pitching Wedge and a 15 degree Callaway 3 Wood. Will this hybrid replace a 2 iron because I saw that a 19 degree taylorMade rescue has the number 3 meaning supposed to replace a 3 iron. I was wondering which to get the 16 degree or the 19 degree. I just thought it was a little weird that the 16 degree was close in loft to a 3 wood but is it planned that Taylormade created the lofts to be soo close from 2 iron hybrid to 3 wood... Thanks

I never really understood the loft on hybrids - Mine is 19 degree, my 3 iron is 21.5 degrees but the Rescue is a number 3.

I hit the rescue further under normal playing conditions. I'd rather get a 2 iron than a 2 hybrid - something i'm considering at the moment. A 2 hybrid is only one degree off my 3 wood.

Yea i know same here. I dont understand the numbering on hybrids. But I guess that Hybrids fly higher and the 16 degree hybrid plays weaker than a 2 iron

I noticed in your signature that you played Ping irons. That's the difference; most of TaylorMade irons have a 3-iron listed as being 19 degree (some have 20). Different manufacturers have different lofts; for example the two iron sets I'm looking at now are the R7 and the Callaway X-20. Their irons differ by a couple of degrees on each club, up to the PW. I'm sure the Pings differ both of them. Some manufacturers just set their clubs up a little stronger...probably so people think "wow, I hit this 7-iron longer than I hit that 7-iron".

excellent thanks buddy. I just checked the TM site and they're mostly 19-20 degrees with the exception of the Rac MB's.

Perhaps i need to reshuffle my bag - get a stronger Rescue or something.

another factor that you guys have to look at is the length of the club
a 16* hybrid isnt that close to a 15* 3-wood because it is a lot shorter than a 3-wood. in terms of distance, a 16* 2 hybrid is more equal to a 5-wood than a 3-wood. my 16* rescue mid is a good 10-20 yards shorter than my burner 3 wood.

hybrids really are meant to replace irons
19* 3 hybrid replaces a 3 iron, 22 replaces a 4, 25 replaces a 5.
you'll hit a 3-hybrid longer than a 3 iron because you'll hit it more consistently.. not necessarily coz its longer

I have the 16, 19 and 21 degree - number 2,3 and 4 respectively. I find they are almost a club longer than the equivilent iron. I don't think it is a consitency issue (although you will be much more consistent with the hybrids).

If you are replacing your 3 iron with the 19*, expect to have quite a distance gap between your 4 iron and the 3 hybrid.

Don't go for the number, instead go for the loft. Meaning 19 deg supposedly replaces 2-iron not 3-iron (21deg).

I had TM Rescue Dual #2 16deg and I sold it just weeks ago. Mainly because it's quite tough to hit rescue at that degree so low to get the ball up in the air. I find hitting 3-wood is easier due to its characteristics as a wood - higher ball flight than hybrid.

IMHO, the 2-hybrid isn't comparable to 3-wood in regards to distance because the 3-wood yields more carry. The best thing is to try both 2H and 3W and see which one gives you the best result.

Hi - i'm relatively new to the game but getting better (slowly). I recently borrowed a rescue wood from a friend and really enjoyed hitting it so figured i'd go out and buy one. (he has the TM Burner graphite stiff shaft)

Here's the question- which is the best/most forgiving rescue wood out there?

I have been looking at the Cleveland Halo (22degree loft) as my budget option, or the Taylormade Rescue Burner (22 degree loft) as my option to match the rest of my bag. Any views on these clubs or others that are better?

The Taylormade Mid Rescue club is a great club. Being that you are a 28 handicap, I would add as many of these clubs in your bag as possible.
The 22/#4 is equal to 4 iron, the 19/#3 is equal to a 3 iron and the 16/#2 is equal to a 1iron or 4 wood. Try and find them on ebay, you should be able to find them for less than $60 each plus S&H. Make sure you get the headcover too for protection and look to buy the regular graphite shaft. Steel is a bit cheaper but it's heavier and stiffer. I have the 19/#3 Mid Hybrid and looking to add a #2 to replace my fairway 3 wood.
