I just took delivery on my new Snake Eyes 675XC irons with Aerotech i95 shafts from Golfsmith. Problem is the irons are 1/4" too short. GS will order new set for me or extend the irons 1/4". My question is if I let them do the extension, does it compromise the performance of the shaft/club at all?

My 2nd issue is that the brand-new iron heads all have very small "nicks" (about 1/8") in the topline and on the toe of the sole. In addition, they also have a dimple (about the size of a pinhead) in the heel. Am I being too picky by complining? Is this normal with brand new iron heads?

Thanks
Ken

adding a little length wont do anything to the performance of the club, adding on an inch will make a difference, especialy the driver, as far as all the nicks goes, if they are new, it should not be all nicked up....i would make sure you recieved a new set, does anyone know how long a "newbie" takes to be a member so i can post?

1/4 short. may not even be that bad to play them. but to make it a quick turn around- have them extend them. the nicks on the clubs- bring to their attention when you send them back for the extensions.
see what happens- all you can do.

Thanks. I will request nothing less than $100 credit, otherwise I send them back and they try again. Golfsmith is very good in that regard.

i would ask them to get a new set since it's not your fault that they come in short.

If it were me I would ask for a new set all together, you get a new set of clubs and you want them to be brand new and the right size and all. I wouldnt settle for that, if you wanted a set that didnt fit you and had nicks in it you could have gotten a used set on Ebay.

Definitely tell them to send you a new set, sized correctly.

I have a great deal of experience buying components from Golfsmith, but not finished clubs. Other than one cheaper head with a rattle in it, they have always been top notch for parts.

I bet that the irons were lie/loft adjusted to correct some tiny manufacturing errors or because of fitting requirements. The equipment used to help adjust the lie/loft angle can be rough on clubheads. In my experience, the Golfsmith staff are rather poor clubmakers too.

The clubs seeming 1/4'' too short is probably because they were not measured in the special, official way. Golf clubs can seem about 1/4'' too short if they are not measured correctly.

I am deeply sorry that Golfsmith served you so poorly. Once, I got them to do something for me (instead of doing it myself) and they royally screwed it up. I got very upset. It was not a good experience for me. Golfsmith is really just an excellent supplier of club parts, not a place to actually get those parts assembled into clubs. They should link the customer to proper clubmakers and personal fitters if they do not have any themselves.

Oh, and to answer your questions, extending a shaft without special care can screw up the club's feel, swingweight balance, lie fitting (if you got that), shaft flex, durability, and possibly even the grip diameter. A 1/4'' extention is not that bad, but remember that the extender weights more than the same length of shaft and is stiffer. Also, the extender will have to be inserted a good ways into the shaft in addition to the length out of it. Even a 1/4'' extension could put the feel, swingweight and flex reasonably off.

I would complain to Golfsmith, but not strongly until you are sure that they made errors. Communication is key to find out what is really happening. The length thing could have been right to begin with, though the cosmetic flaws seem like an obvious mistake to me.

I really do not know for sure what is wrong other than that the clubheads do not look good. That is all of the information I can give that might help you. I hope things get straightened out for you.

    • They're playing 16 games in each match though. Don't need much of an advantage before that number of players significantly loads things in their favor. The other team has to win 8.5 games to beat them. At a 65/35 split, that's a lot and pretty unlikely (about 10% of the time).
    • Why does the second sentence have to be true? If they're used to playing a tough course that's improperly rated, they're going to both have inflated indexes and have higher skills relative to them. If their home course features a variety of different challenges, I don't see why their game wouldn't travel well. And on the flip side, some courses and their members take pride in how hard their course is and how tough it's rated, and that bit of vanity ends up hurting them in these kinds of competitions.
    • I discussed it today but can call back and re-confirm.  I would love to be wrong on that point. Note: That may have been before they changed the hotel due to lack of room at Hampton Inn. Update on Friday Hotel: If I can give a count to EagleSticks they can get us a discount on Friday night at the hotel.  I do not have the $$ but should be much lower than the $249 the hotel quoted me. I do not have my list with me for the Friday hotels but if you want one, please post ASAP and I will get the rate and get them held. Thanks @billchao for catching this.
    • There are plenty of amazing things people are doing every single day, but if other people don't care about it, nobody is going to notice. LPGA is not popular that popular, so despite the great achievement, is not getting any attention and is going to be forgotten very soon. On the other side, if tiger farts louder than normal we are definitively going to know about it because tiger is popular.
    • @StuM when I called the course a couple of months ago they said you can mention that you want to add an extra night to the hotel when you book the package through them and the people who are in charge of the stay and play can handle it, did you ask them about that?
