My experience with a weighted club

Golf is not a spring time sport for me. My kids' little league baseball plus all stars, cheerleading and basketball camps, church camps, etc take up most of my afternoons and many weekends. This year I bought a weighted club to swing a bit between chauffering my kids around and my next golfing opportunity.

I tried to swing it at least 50 times a day, thinking that I was going to be "Bubba Watson" long once I got to play again. Well, I was wrong, after a few weeks with the weighted club I finally got to play a round and my swing was horrible. I have been to the range everyday for 3 weeks and got some sense of my swing back but not nearly what I am accustomed to. The weighted club is now in timeout waiting for my next ebay adventure.

Has anybody had similar experience with the weighted clubs? If so, what faults did you develop? My primary problem was a weak slice and the dreaded el hosel.

I am done with the training aids. And thats all I have to say about that.

I actually really like my weighted driver. I dont use it for extra distance, as much as I do to get warmed up for a round. But it does help me loosen up and relax.

I bought a weighted iron and swung it about 5-10 times and the next day I felt pain in my rib area so I stop using it.

I keep one of the those weighted doughnuts(mmmm...doughnuts), in my bag and only use it for a dozen or so swings to warm up before htting balls. We had a weighted club at work that we use to swing occasionaly just to swing a club. Seemed to help me loosen up a little but I am not sure of what benifts it would have as a "training aid".

A weighted club is supposed to force your swing on plane on the down swing (because of the weight).

It is proven that regularly swinging a weighted club slows down your swing as opposed to speeding it up.

Will just look for them now, originally like you I didn't believe it but it does make sense when you think about it.

Atm, I can't find the research, but here is why it makes you swing slower in a very very small nut shell - If you practise swinging slower, your going to swing the club slower.

It is I suppose about how you use the weighted club, using it properly with specific exercises and it could marginally improve your swing speed, however just swinging the club over and over again will cause a loss of swing speed.

I could be wrong here but it seems it would almost be as easy to get a weighted club "off" plane as it would a regular club.

I could be wrong here but it seems it would almost be as easy to get a weighted club "off" plane as it would a regular club.

I think it would be harder to come over the top or get the club head outside the line on the down swing, the extra weight alone would surely encourage the club on to a much flatter down swing plane.

I thought the principle was to build resistence with the weighted club, hence less resistence when swinging a lighter club thus improving clubhead speed. Then again I am no expert.

That is why I bought the damn thing. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it would slow swing speed down!!!

Thats the theory, but swing a weighted club 10 times at say 50 mph is not going to suddenly encourage a 100 mph swing, it will encourage a 50 mph swing.

Same here...but I only swing it a few times on days I'm going to play to get loosened up but use it for 10-15 minutes on off days.

Well yes it will strengthen your golfing muscles, but it's not going to speed them up, to train speed you need to do something fast.

I could get technical, you are encouraging the muscle contractions to occur at a slower rate if you swing a weighted club at a slow/medium swing.

That is not true. If you train certain muscles, they grow and strengthen. This brings them more strength, stamina, and speed. Muscle memory brings speed. Why do you think when someone first picks up golf, the swing plane is so slow. Then as their muscles get accustomed to doing that motion, they can swing faster. It has nothing to do with doing something fast to encourage speed. Why do you think runners train with weights on. So get stronger? No, to get faster.

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.  
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
