Is there a benefit to buying clubs from say Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy over a place like Dick's Sporting Goods or Sports Authority? All these places have the clubs I'm looking at priced the same so that thought is out. I'm not sure about Sports Authority but all the other places atleast have a place where I can hit the clubs so that might remove Sports Authority from the "equation". I was just thinking that SA is closer to me than all the other places but if they don't have a place to try the clubs it would benefit me to drive a little longer of a distance to try the clubs and make sure I like them before I buy them. Does anyone know if any of those places "deal" on things, like if I was going to buy a set of irons if they would discount a driver or hybrids a little more or maybe a new bag? Thanks guys.

Unless you consider paying full retail when you don't need to a benefit, then no. I always buy from very reputable sellers off of ebay and have never had a problem ever.

If you know exactly what you want then ebay is fine. If you need to go down the route of trying stuff then I'd recommend Golfsmith. I got great service when I was buying my clubs. They can do certain deals on certain clubs, though NOT Ping or Callaway!!

GolfSmith also has a deal going where on almost any club they offer, if for any reason you decide you dont like it within 90 days of purchase, you can bring it back and get up to 90% of you money back (to go towards a different club). As long as you dont beat the hell out of it while you have it, thats a pretty good deal.

Wherever you purchase clubs from, make sure to have them fitted. Any reputable place will do this for you and a good fitting by a pro makes a huge difference.
Clubs are manufactured for a guy that is 5'10" with a standard stance. I am 5'11" but when I bought my set and had them fitted, the pro showed me how I tend to stand tall and my clubs are fitted more for a guy who is 6'1" to 6'2".

You could say I should adjust my stance, but I hit the ball well. My pro didn't try to change this. Fitted clubs eliminated alot of tops and fat shots, because I could swing natural and make solid contact.

My pro is usually 10% cheaper than the major golf stores (and has everything), plus the fitting was free. I think other places charge for it.

I agree with Slim's post- custom fit is the most important thing when purchasing clubs.

I will most likely have a fitting done. I am about the same height as you. I'm just under 6' with shoes. I believe my doctor has me at 70 inches or so. I was talking with someone over the weekend about golf clubs and I said that most likely this will be the last set of clubs that I will buy for a very long time.

If I were to buy clubs from Golfsmith and I have them fitted and they need to be 1 inch longer will the price of the clubs go up or would I still be paying $399 or how ever much the clubs are? Or are the changes to the clubs included in the price of the fitting? How much does it cost to have a fitting done?

Any big box golf store will fit clubs for free. You'll be getting clubs on special order, so you won't walk out with them, but you won't pay any extra for them.

However, most of them will charge you a fee if you wish to get fitted without purchasing the clubs. At PGA Superstore, I payed $40 up front for the fitting, and then when I decided to go ahead and order through them, they refunded the $40 fitting fee as a credit on my purchase.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

Some places charge extra for the fitting (usually about $50) but it won't change the price of the clubs. Personally, for the amount of money you are probably going to spend, wether they charge for a fitting or not would be a factor for me of where I buy them.
I am assuming that you are buying a mid to higher range set, so you are looking at $500 + for irons. When I got my set (including woods) in 2006, I dropped about $1200. But if it's the last set you plan on buying, what the heck.

Unless you know exactly what you want, it is worth going to a store and hitting them first.

It is definitely worth the time.

I'm stuck between two sets of clubs but I plan on hitting both sets and maybe a couple more before I actually buy something.

I'll most likely drop around $500 during my purchase so I'm going to take my time and see what I like. I can't afford to drop another $500 in a year or two.

I'm sort of in a similar boat.

I haven't been fit ever, but I've done the online measurement stuff, at Ping's website, etc. I'm 6'3" and according to that and all the other measurements, I'm going to need irons that are .5 an inch longer than standard.

Now, I really wanted to buy some clubs on eBay from a reputable dealer because usually they have deals that are a little better than anywhere else. My main concern then is, how do they add length when I take the clubs I would buy off eBay in and get fitted for them? I've heard plugs, but I've heard those don't work that great and you're better off just ordering a custom set with a longer shaft to begin with. Thing is, that'll cost me more.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
