The two putters that I've looked at so far are the Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport or the TaylorMade ACGB Daytona 1.
What kind of car do you drive? Do you own any artwork? Have you ever bought something with a brand name when a generic model was available?
Scotty Camerons are worth the cost if they're worth it to you. It's that simple.
For me, I appreciate the craftsmanship and the style. His putters are beautiful to look at. I tried, for example, a Yes! putter that was $100 less than the Red X I use. It sounded bad and just looked "cheap" in a way that you'd never see with a Scotty Cameron. Or a Bettinardi, etc.
Something like 30-40% of your strokes in golf come with the putter. It's the one area of my game where I vowed never to skimp, because if I have the slightest bit of doubt in the putter in my hands, aesthetically, aurally, etc., I am going to miss the putt, or I'm more likely to at least.
He wouldn't charge more if the market didn't see the value and pay what he requests. So his prices are worth it to those who buy them, and not to those who go less expensive. So the real question is: are you one of those people or not?
