Teaching my gf to play

My girlfriend wants to learn how to play golf so she can go with me sometimes. She's never picked up a club before so whats the best way to get her started?

What I'm hitting:

XL 5000 set: includes driver, 3 & 5 wood, 4 & 5 hybrid, 6-PW, and sandwedge

Do not attempt to teach her how to swing a golf glub.

Send her to a teaching pro, unless you want the relationship to end.

TOTALLY agree with powerfade; it's what I did with my wife when she wanted to learn (we actually took semi-private lessons, just her and me. She was taught correctly and I am hitting better than I ever have before. Cost us $400 for 6 1-hour lessons). If I had tried to teach her it probably would not have been pretty. Plus I couldn't teach anyone!

I agree with Kekoa. Golf is definitely an escape from the women, the madness. But if you really want her to learn, let the professionals do the teaching.

I kinda regullary "practice" with a girl who basically is a beginner. My practice starts with putting, chipping and a bit pitching - thats it - and the only reason i do this with her - for me its pretty much a pain in the ... - is cuz i want to show her the importance of practice and improve her feel for the game.

I NEVER talk to her about full swing and stuff like that since i´m just not feeling capable of actually doing that - and belive me, i had A LOT of pro lessons - but there is a reason why these guys are certified and i & you are not.

See, I enjoy golfing with my wife; she's pretty athletically inclined anyway so she's picking it up pretty quickly (she got a par and birdie her first time out!). Plus, it just means I get to golf more since she's going too (it costs twice as much, but that's OK). I play with the guys too at her insistence so I'm not too sure why this is a bad thing to some of you? I think it's pretty cool watching her get better and you gotta start sometime, right? When I started golfing in high school we didn't play executive courses, we played long-ass 6,600 yard courses and shooting 50 and 60 for 9 holes for a while. We'll be waiting on the tee box or walking up the fairway and we'll see people hitting shots way worse than she does; she is already better than alot of people we see out playing and she hasn't broken 100 yet. I see it happening soon though. I guess I enjoy doing things with my wife I suppose.

I taught my wife to play and she regularly shoots in the 90's but many people including our pro are amazed that this did not end in divorce, One caution however, when ever something goes wrong with the swing, YOU are the one who has to analyze the swing and correct and sometimes it takes a while and it's YOUR fault

I agree with Kekoa. Golf is definitely an escape from the women, the madness. But if you really want her to learn, let the professionals do the teaching.

I agree with both of you - golf is an escape for me, a time to be with the guys.

Although it'd be helpful to get that extra round in once a week or so, that you otherwise might not be "allowed" to have ;)

It's not difficult to share the basics of golf with a wife, gf or s.o. to a point where they can decide if it's something they'd like to continue with. Then, lessons with a teaching pro is a really good idea.

For example, my wife started out putting in the basement on carpet. Next step was learning how to chip and get a feel for how a golf ball behaved in a live situation. It was after we bought her decent clubs and I saw her natural swing that lessons came on the scene.

And like some others mentioned, golfing with the wife is a good thing. gives you both something to do and spend time together.

Good point. I know i wouldnt wanna be married to my golf pro cuz there are times i really just feel a pretty big hate for him. I see it this way - i pay him (a lot) - he is the only one who teaches me golf all year long - so i expect to improve and play well and work on any problems he comes across with me and fix these problems fast and efficiently.

It took my quite some time to realize that this is not the way how golf works and problems come up all the time - and there is nothing like a problem that you thought you got rid off last year and suddenly it pops up again - thats driving me nuts. My way to deal with it - blame it on the pro. He knows how to handle and take it (most golf pros are masters of patience and politeness) - but do YOU know how to handle frustration of your gf when it comes up - and it will come up, frustration is just a part of the game.

I'd love for my wife to play with me. (golf i mean.) (well, sexually wouldn't be bad either ) obviously not every time out, but on occasion wouldn't be bad. I'd love to teach her how to play. I'm so far from a certified pro it's not even funny. But honestly...I've taught a couple friends from ground up how to play. Putting, chipping, pitching are the easiest, but full swings are extremely hard. but that's where a video camera and a laptop on the scene come in handy. I don't understand how pro's can watch someone's swing in full speed and pick out shit that went wrong. Wizards they are. lol

i golf with my g/f on Saturdays, escape with the boys on Sunday...

also, i bought her lessons on Valentine's day, damn if i was going to pay $100 for dead flowers. 3 lessons 1/2 long, private $180. watching her hit the ball without whiffing 3 or 4 times- priceless.

I agree with everyone, I tried to teach my wife to drive a stick shift and made her cry, to this day, I don't know what I did to make her cry. spend the money on golf lessons it cheaper than a divorce lawyer.

      It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.

      And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.

      He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.

      At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
