Well, I have been researching the new 2008 Taylormade balls for some time now. Since I returned to golf in 2004 I have been searching for a ball with just the right feel, distance and spin. In the last 4 years I played Prov1x for a couple years until last year I tried the 2007 Taylormade Black and was impressed that it was very simular to the Prov1x and I got a few extra yards out of them over the Prov1x. I started this year with the remaining 2007 Taylormade Black balls but finally ran out a couple weeks ago.

So the search began for a new ball. Our club championship was coming up and I tried to find out what these new 2008 Taylormade balls were all about but there seems to be a lot of confusion out there about what ball does what so I played it safe and bought a dozen Prov1x. The Prov1x was pretty much what I always expected them to be but they just spin a tad to much for my game.

Today I bought a dozen of the Taylormade Reds and I have to say for my game this is what I've been searching for these past few years. The distance was a good 3-5 yards farther with my irons than Prov1x, and 10 yards longer with the driver. I was able to back up many iron shots today but I didn't spin any off the green like I had with the Prov1x. Finally I would say the TP Red feels slightly softer around the greens than the Prov1x. I normally drive the ball 270 yards off the tee but I hadn't had a 300 yard drive all year but today on the 18th I really caught one on the 530yd par five and sky caddie marked it off as a 315 yard drive.

I give these balls a HUGE THUMBS UP!!!!

The 2008 Red LDP is last year's Black. TM has done a terrible job marketing these two balls. They make it very confusing and unclear, but they are both pretty much the same distance wise, but hte black spins a little more and the red is asofter feel.

That's not the case. The balls haven't been "switched," but I will agree that TM has done a pretty bad job of marketing the differences.

Yes, I found it confusing on how Taylormade marketed these balls in 2008.

I agree that the 2008 TP Red is very close to the 2007 TP Black in distance and spin rate. I thought the feel was a little bit softer and that may be because the Red is still a 4 piece ball and the Black is a 3 piece ball.

I haven't tried the 2008 TP Black yet so I don't know how it feels but I am very happy with the Red's performance.

I went back to Titleist because I could never get a straight answer on which Taylormade ball is the spinnier ball. I really prefer to have a soft feel. I don't necessarily want the spin, but I do like the softness of the ProV1.

TP Red's 2007 really are amazing. This years is good as well but since I tried the B330-S Bridgestones the TP Reds are my backup.

IMHO the TP Reds are unmatched as far as soft feel + distance off the tee. BUT I like the Bstones because they spin less, especially in terms of accuracy!

My cut iron shots with TP Reds are about 20-30 yards. Bridgestones are closer to 5-10 yards. My draw woods off the tees are the same as well. I think the Bridgestone B330-S's are more 'focused' accuracy wise to me.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
