Davis Love---can he make it--the Fed Ex?

You have to be in the Top 144 on the list to make it to the FedEx Cup playoffs. Davis Love III is now 150th, and the Wydham is his last chance to move up. I wish him the best, but he and a few others have been quoted saying something that makes no sense:

"The Ryder Cup is in the back of my mind. The way Paul set it up, if I win one or two events, I could make the team. That's who he wants, a guy who is hot, and hopefully, I'm one of those guys."

If someone has a lackluster season, and "puts it together" to win one of these last events, should he be selected to play on the Ryder Cup? In my opinion, NO. If you have not accumulated enough points to be in the Top 20 on the Ryder Cup list, you should not be considered, because picking you is a "slap in the face" to those guys who played decently all season long. If someone has "cooled down", then Paul's philosophy is correct.

Here are some players deserving of being on the "short list":

1. Rocco Mediate---pretty obvious

2. Brandt Snedeker

3. Bart Bryant

Davis Love has played in 16 events, and has NO Top 10 finishes and only 3 in the Top 25. Bryant has finished 2nd once and 3rd once. Snedeker has 5 Top 10's and 7 Top 25's. If these two "tank it" in the next few weeks, then I am sure that 'Zinger will pass them up. However, even if Davis wins, and someone of the other guys play well and finish in the Top 10, I do not see him getting picked. Do you agree? It is nice to hear him say that he thinks that he has a chance, but I do not see that happening.

I think he needs a top 20 or 30 to make the FedEx so I definitely think he can do that.

As far as the Ryder Cup I have a hard time seeing Love on the team, even if he does win. However, I don't think Azinger cares about who played well last year or at the beginning of this year, or hurting anyone's feelings. He wants to win so why wouldn't he want someone hot right now? He only needs players for a few days so I'd want guys playing well too.

Well, DL3 won this event two years ago, and he is definitely familiar with the golf course. It seems as though he should make it in the top 144.

It's just crazy we are even asking this question. He has found himself in contention quite a bit early in tournaments, but he has crumbled badly down the stretch. Without looking, I would have guessed he was around 100th in the standings. I didn't know he was on the outside.

You are right. He still has "game", but has trouble closing. All the more reason that he should not be picked for the Ryder Cup.

I honestly don't even think he is on Paul Azinger's radar right now. Unless he wins an event or two in the next couple weeks, he won't even be considered. He shouldn't be anyway.

The golf course moved this year to a different location then the last couple years.

I will give Davis credit---he shot a nice 66 yesterday, and is only 3 strokes back. I like the guy, but I do not think he will be picked (or should be selected). Here is his Ryder Cup record for playing in 6 matches: overall: 9-12-5, BUT his singles record was 3-1-2. This record was accumulated when he was in his prime, and he clearly is beyond that now.

Good call on the course change for this year's event. That completely slipped my mind. Nonetheless, if it's in North Carolina, I'm sure DL3 knows a thing or two about it.

As of right now, he is projected in 150th place in the FedEx Cup standings, so he still has some work to do. He made the cut and is in position to make a move forward though, so there is definitely hope. On a side note, I saw that Lee Janzen is projected in the 140th spot right now. I'd like to see him stay there and at least play the first playoff event. He has played a little more consistent this season than in recent years, but he can't put a weekend together either.

Even if he has a slim chance, I wish the best for DL3 as he is one of my favorites and truly a class act.

He is a class act, and his victory in the 1997 PGA was well deserved (remember the rainbow in the sky?). You know, it is somewhat surprising that he and Freddie Couples each won only one Major. Of course, we can say the same thing about Tom Kite and Lanny Wadkins. This fact about those four shows that you can be a proven winner on Tour, but to win Majors takes something special that makes them difficult, even for top players. Sergio has found that out.

Davis is headed in the wrong direction----66 (nice round)---70----71. He is now tied for 63rd. This is not what he hoped for, and is killing his chances of making the Fed Ex and has definitely wiped out any chance of being considered for the Ryder Cup.

Very true. He has a great swing and can still hit it well, but the short stick-----------------that is a different story.

It looks like Davis' lackluster performance at the Wyndham left him in 154th place, so I believe that he failed in his goal to qualify for the Fed Ex. Am I right? To be honest, I was rooting for him, and if he did miss out, it is too bad.

DL3 missed out by 10 spots, and his 2008 FedEx Cup season was definitely a failure. That being said, hopefully he will play in a few events after the Tour Championship and get some good finishes. We had a lot of big-name winners like Mike Weir and Justin Leonard in last year's post-FedEx Cup Playoffs.

It's always good to see DL3 in the thick of things, and I hope he ends 2008 on a good note.

I was happy to see Lee Janzen slip into the Playoffs at 144th. He has been much more consistent this season, and maybe he has another decent year or two in him.

I live within 32 minutes of the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, which does sponsor (by themselves) the first tournament after the Fed Ex playoffs and the Ryder Cup. It is my hope that Davis Love plays here, and I would love to see him. Last year, Jeff Maggert came and shot a 63 in an early round. Afterward, I interviewed him and spoke with him about his health and his opinions of the course. It is great to have players like him and hopefully, Davis, play nearby.

While I have seen Davis play before, I never really followed him for a number of holes, or more importantly, watch him at the practice area. I am familiar with his swing, which is a great one (he had a good teacher in his Dad), and would like to watch him close up.
