Currently looking for a new set of irons and was after your opinions on the final two sets?? Considering Im looking at a forged iron I have narrowed it down to either the 690 CB or the MP 30's.

But if anybody has any other Irons which you may have thought I have missed I would welcome that opinion also.

Thank you for your time.....

TaylorMadeFan will have some input here, I think. Here's mine...

Have you hit the clubs yet? If you can, that's obviously the best way to determine what you like. They're similar in design, no doubt, and both are going to be a high quality club. You won't be disappointed with either, but the feel, the look at setup, and the height of the ball flight will differ slightly with each. Hitting them is the way to go.

Mizunos, I've heard, dechrome a little too easily. I haven't seen this personally - only heard it - so take that for what it's worth.

What led you to either of these clubs? What's your game like?

Are you set on a 1/2 cavity? I'm assuming you're a shot shaper, but what's your preffered trajectory? Also, how much of a rush are you in? If you wait till about late March/early April, you'll be able to look at the new iron selections from Titleist and Nike and if those don't suit your fancy you may be able to pick up an older model for VERY cheap.

I was in a situation similar to yours a while ago, I tried out just about every iron on the market and ended up going with the Titleist 690MB. You've chosen two very similar irons, both are 1/2 cavity forged with progressive weighting to help with forgiveness in the longer irons and increased accuracy and lower ball flight in the shorter ones.

Mizuno's are hand forged in Japan and the quality of their forgings are superior to just about every other company other than Miura (which is the stuff golf dreams are made of). The problem I had with them is that they're almost too good. The irons felt too soft for my taste, I like the feeling that the ball is exploding off the face of the club and a nice sharp "crack" at impact. I didn't get it with the Mizuno's (there was no difference in distance with the Mizuno's). However, there are many many people who rave about Mizuno's and would give their lives before giving up their irons, so I definately think they're worth a demo.

Titleists are forged in China and although they don't have the prestige of the Japanese forgeries, they've held up very well so far. I think the 690.CB's are great irons great feel, shot shaping ability, feedback, slim address, minimal offset, it's all there. The only thing which led me to the MB was the trajectory of the shot, the CB was higher than I like.

Long story short, I think it comes down to the feel your prefer. The only way to determine that is too try them out for yourself and see. They're both great clubs, I don't think you can err with either.

As far as other suggestions, I'd look into Miura for their 1/2 cavity. What about combo sets which morph from muscleback into half cavities, some hot looking new forged offerings from Bridgestone are about to come out in March. Nike has updated and greatly improved their forged pro combo set for '05. Also the Ben Hogan Apex FXT.

As always the disclaimer applies that irons are a very individual choice and different people prefer different qualities in their irons. My opinions are not meant to put down anyone else, their clubs, or any golf companies.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Both iacas and Taylormadefan.

I really apriciate your feedback on these Irons. I have sorced some demo days coming up for both brands. However the drive for Titleist DD is quite long.

Taylormadefan do you have any links for the muira irons? I am a solid ball striker. But love the forged feel as im looking for a lower ball flight and softer contact on impact. I currently play off 6 and practise three nights a week. Plus rounds on the weekend.

Thanks for your comments!!

Sounds like muscle back blades are right up your alley. I've never seen a muira iron let alone hit one, but I've heard they're just incredible. They're not ridiculously expensive either, especially if you buy direct.

Keep us updated on what you decide!

TaylormadeFan,

I really like the MB that you use. However the full blade look on the longer irons is a little intimadating!!! How do you feel?

This a such a difficult process all the leading brands are so good now!

Australia is so far behind in all the releases!

And demo are few and far between.

Thanks for your imput...

The 690.CB looks the same as the 690.MB at address.

TaylormadeFan,

When I was buying, I was inbetween the 670 which is a heel weighted low trajectory MB and the 690 MB. I chose the 690 because I was able to get the ball up in the air much easier with the long irons while still keeping a fairly low trajectory in the scoring irons.

I can definately sympathise with the commitment required to hit a 2 iron out of thick rough on a par-5, but I haven't had a problem yet with the 690's. They're the largest looking blade titleist makes, and I just tell myself with that huge chunck of metal, I can't help but put a good stroke on the ball. I'd really suggest looking into a combo set. I really wish Titleist would bite the bullet and make one, they're great for low handicappers. You can have the best of both worlds, a muscle back in the scoring irons and a cavity back in the long irons.

I think that the titleist 690cb/mb combo set would be great that is what I was going to get until I hit the Mp-32's(Great clubs)

Congrats on the decision. I know you'll be very happy with them. I'm interested to see which model you decide on since they make so many good blades. Keep us updated!

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
