Callaway Irons - What do you recommend

Looking to buy new irons. Narrowed it down to Callaway Big Bertha's or X-18.

I'm a 17 handicap and need to improve my iron play.

Would like to hear your thoughts.

i would always recommend to fit ur club...a fitted club is always better than a club few time expensive than the fitted one...

I don't think you can go wrong with the Big Bertha irons if you're a 17. They are super-easy to hit and very forgiving. They have very wide soles, which helps get the ball up in the air and also helps improve your results when you hit behind the ball a bit. Simply put, the Big Berthas are point-and-shoot irons; you have to work pretty hard to hit bad shots with them.

The X-18s are very good, too. But the Big Berthas are built with a 17-handicapper in mind. And the 2004 Big Berthas on now on clearance. The new 2006 version isn't much different, so you could get a good deal on the older version and not miss out on performance.

Agree with the above post about custom fitting. Getting the right lie angle and shaft can make a huge difference for any skill level.

The pro at my club plays the new 06 Big Berthas and says this is the best he's even played. We were all a little surpirsed about him getting those since he is single digit handicap but all that matters is the score at the end.

I decided last Friday I didn’t want my Ping golf clubs any more so I started looking on-line and in my golf magazines for info on the latest clubs. I went to my local golf store Saturday morning, traded in my 2 sets of pings and bought a brand new set. I went with the intention of buying a set of Titleist 735s. I thought I was good enough to step up to a set of forged clubs but I was wrong. When I hit them I was very inconsistent so I had to re-think my plan. I tried just about every demo club in the store and narrowed it down to 3, which happened to all be Callaway clubs (Fusion, X-18, BB). I hit those 3 some more and decided on the 2006 Big Bertha Irons. They were just so easy to hit. I couldn't miss a shot with them so how could I not buy them! The Fusions also felt sweet, but they were $400 more. They came 4-SW but I'm adding the 3i and AW (50 deg). I can't wait to hit them on the course.

I recommend that you go somewhere where you can hit the clubs on a full range and where they'll measure you (lie, lenght, shaft...). It will take some time but it's worth it. What a better way to spend a few hours pounding balls with the latest irons on the market.
