I've had my problem diagnosed, now I need help fixing it!

Basically my problem for the past month has been a severe case of the shanks, slices, pushes and everything else under the sun that involves going right. The problem: my hips are ahead of my hands. The reason: I don't correctly load up my back leg, which saps me of power, and results in the ball going sideways to the right. How do I learn to correctly shift my weight to my back foot and not "sway". Any help, especially drills, would be greatly appreciated.

biggest thing i think with slicing is a balance issue. try taking a wider stance, somewhere in between your normal stance and a far too wide stance. this promotes a good hip turn which helps your timing and balance, it eliminates the "sway" that can cause slicing.

There are a lot of videos that address this issue. Taking a lesson from a professional is the best way to get the feedback you are looking for. If you know a local professional in your area, not a friend or family, have them take a look at the dynamics of your swing.

try this drill:
set up to the ball
move your right foot 6 inches back
see what happens

I have the same problem. Instead of fixing it, I changed my grip to compensate. It seemed to work well for me.

One basic thing to consider is the action of your back leg in the backswing. A fundamental flaw that most of us fight is straightening the back leg on the backswing which often causes over rotation of the hips and prevents us from getting our weight properly balanced on our back leg or loaded up, if you will, on the back leg. Your back knee should have some flex in it at setup. You should maintain that flex all the way to the top of the backswing and down to impact. Also, resist rotation of the back leg in the backswing. Doing this, you should feel a lot of tension running down the inside of your back leg from your hips down to the ground. This tells you that you have shifted your weight properly. A rotational shift not a lateral shift.

I think, and someone can correct me if I am wrong, a tell-tale sign of the condition you are describing is the back foot is well off the ground when you make contact. If you are swinging correctly the back foot should just be lifting as you come into impact.

    • I'm not doing this for the hundred and twentieth time. Sorry in advance, but you get the massively abridged version. Those guys also benefited from the weaker/shallower fields. Also, Watson's career doesn't overlap with Jack's like many think it did. Tom is nearly a decade younger. Jack won only like four majors only after Tom won his first. And Tom won more British Opens than he did all three of the other majors combined, as it was his specialty (not Jack's). Arnie's career similarly doesn't overlap Jack's as much as many think.   Jack would also tell you Tiger was the better golfer.
    • Weaker depth of fields for sure. Some of the top level guys with Jack were pretty awesome. Tom Watson had the lead on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open, an event where Tiger missed the cut. Old Tom was almost 60 years old. Jack himself at age 58 finished Top 10 at The 1998 Masters and scored better than Tiger, who won The Masters by 12 shots just a year before that.   The success of both Tom & Jack in older age gives some hope that maybe Tiger can find the magic again at some point. He’s still trying to figure out how to build the stamina for 72 holes after the leg injury. I would love to see him jump on the leaderboard in the coming years. I know a lot of people have given up on him at this point, but that was also true from 2014 to 2017 with the back injuries. He had a hell of a resurgence in 2018 & 2019. Would be fun to see it again.

    • I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.
