I broke down and took my first lesson on saturday. I found an instructor online through craigslist and after several Email conversations decided to give him a try. After just 1 lesson, I can honestly tell you that I think my game has improved. He didn't try to teach me too much, and I wasn't shy to point out my worst parts and we kept it very simple. I worked entirely with only a 9 iron and a 7 iron for the duration of my lesson.

I am going to hit the range one night this week to see if I notice improvement without him harping on me.

He teaches at a course that I have played, and when he asked what I shot (56-46) he told me my swing dictates a much better game then that, and after working on a few things, I think I will see alot more consistency in my game.

My goal is to shoot in the 80's, and I think with his continued assistance, I will be able to achive my goal. I am careful not to set a date on my goal, because I don't want to fail because I didn't improve fast enough.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Congrats on first lesson. You've taken a step that too many golfers seem to be scared of or something. Be patient with the instructor and any changes because sometimes they take a while to 'take hold'. The worst is when the changes seem to work immediately after the lesson, then seem to desert you. Practicing these changes and doing any recommended drills will usually result in improvements that you'll be happy with.

From what you've said, you seem to have found an instructor your comfortable with and this makes a huge difference.

Yes - he told me to pick up hogan's book, as he teaches the fundmentals from that.

One thing that I am very excited about is that he will go out and play 9 with you. He charges a little less then a 2 hour rate, but he will teach you everything including course management.

I have evaluated my game, and I think the weakest parts of my game are my driving and my chipping. But if he can come out with me a few times and tell me that I am right or wrong, I think it will go a long way to helping me get that much better.

I wish I could practice though, I don't have high enough ceilings anywhere in my house, and it's too cold to practice outside. I can hit the range and domes, but I would love to be able to swing a club in the back yard to learn some muscle memory.

Indian Boundry in Chicago (Billy Caldwell / Forest preserve course) It's an 18 hole golf course. During the winter he works at a golf dome in the area.
