Re: drills for over the top

I've had this problem for years. I've recently tried one thing that has helped me correct (or at least lessen) the problem. Most golfers would say I'm crazy for doing this, they are probably right....I started paying real close attention to Kenny Perry. He really looks to be getting the club going upright. I honestly know very little about drills and such because I'm more of a feel player. But when I started trying to keep the butt of the club pointing at or inside the ball going up and back, things improved for me.

On the downswing my only thought is to keep my right elbow in to my ribcage. That seems to help me from throwing the club over the top as well.

Good Luck!

Re: drills for over the top

Stand behind the ball and pick the line you want the clubhead traveling back along - presumably less inside in your case. Put a coin on that line about 6-12" behind the ball. Brush the coin on your take-away. Repeat ad nauseam!

Make sure you initiate the downswing with the lower body i.e. legs, hips. Do not start down first with hands, arms, shoulders; they'll follow naturally if you start with the lower body.

Put two balls on the floor either side of the one you're hitting. Put one of them further from your feet than the object ball and slightly nearer your back foot. Put the other one nearer your feet than the object ball and nearer your front foot. Make the gap between the outer two balls big enough to easily get a club through to hit the object ball. Hit the object ball without hitting either of the other balls. If you're throwing over the top you'll almost certainly hit the outer ball first.

Did you see the other thread we have going concerning this same topic? There are some very good suggestions in that one.

This is a fantastic swing thought. Its huge for me. Here's a good drill too. Place a 2x4 on the ground about an inch outside your ball and parallel to the target line. Take the club back along that line and I guarantee that you will miss that two by four on your way through the ball. It feels horrible to hit it of course. If you do smash the 2x4 you've obviously thrown the club outside the target line on your way down. This helps to make sure you are not approaching the ball from the outside like that.

Re: drills for over the top

I would go one better than the previous post. Keep your right arm glued to your side through the backswing. If you do that, it's almost impossible to come over the top.
