I am replacing my FT-3 driver with a V2 this year.

Almost by chance, I have hit a G5 on two separate occasions, and I have to say, I am really impressed with how easy this club is to hit. One of the clubs had an NV-65 and the other had a Speeder 686. Both hit the ball extremely straight and very long. I have never really considered owning a Ping driver until recently.

I have owned several Taylor drivers in the past. I have hit the TM Burner TP which I like.

Prior to hitting the G5, I was considering the SuperQuad. Could anyone comment on the G5 and SuperQuad in terms of similarity, forgiveness, etc., or just general experience???

Even though the Ping isn't bad, I'd reccomend the superquad. It's nice being able to tweak ballflight for course conditions. Have you tried it out yet?

I have a superquad with a nv-65 in it and i really like it, it is very forgiving and easy to hit. The black face looks awesome and you can actually see the impact mark on the face so you know exactly where you hit it (you can rub it off easily with your towel). never hit the G5 though. I have hit a G10 and didnt like it as much.

I like my G5, but I can honestly say I'm looking at some of the newer designs. For a traditional headshape the G5 is very forgiving both off the toe and the heel. It must have a lot of roll on the face. The reason I say this, is that shots high on the face absolutely baloon. I know that is bound to happen with high hits, especially since mine is a 12*. The face on this club, as you may have noticed, is quite tall. I would not recommend it to a player that likes to tee the ball down.

I've always liked the look of the G5s. The fact that the face is dead square, even in the higher lofts, was a major selling point for me. Mine has a v2 stiff shaft that has been tip cut 1". I know that seems odd, it wasn't really the plan. But my only problem with the G5 is the extra shaft length. They claim the factory spec is 45 3/4" but after removing 1" mine measures 44" down the shaft. I think they measure to the center of the face at the factory. Regardless, after shortening the shaft I'm hitting the center more often. I just had to put a ton of lead tape on.

I would say that my G5 hits relatively low for it's loft, but undoubtedly a lot of that is due to the super stiff shaft. I hit it side by side recently with a 9* Cobra LD F speed in regular flex stock shaft. My 12* G5 carried about the same distance but on a much lower trajectory. The Cobra was hitting rain makers with a lot more hang time. I don't get maximum carry with my setup, but the head seems very consistant. It also has a ton of feel, I know exactly where on the face I hit without looking. I probably loose 10 yards of carry with my setup. But man does it ever run for hell! It usually takes a 15-20 yard kick and then runs about 20 yards more.

Anyway, that's my experience with the G5. Good Luck!

Thanks for the comment. I have not hit the SuperQuad. I have hit the TP Burner and I like the way the ball comes off the face. The Ping G5 just seems to be really consistent. It would be easy to overthink the obvious...if the G5 works, why look for something else???

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
