I managed to go out and play 2 rounds of golf last week, with my pops. I didnt have any clubs on me so I borrowed from a friend. The clubs that impressed me the most were the hybrids. They are some sort of callaway big bertha hybrids. Im not sure which model but they are less than 2 years old I believe and I just loved the feel and the playability of them.

I also found them to be quite compact at adress, which I liked, giving more of an iron feeling than a wood. I have looked at golftown and golfsmith and have not been able to find them. So I was wondering of other hybrids that arent large at adress and will play nicely. (Found the TM hybrids too large)

I have a 3 iron replacement(19*). It's a Adams Idea A3 Boxer. I really like it.When I hit it properly, it'll jump off the club and get out there about 215-220.Nice high ball flight. I am looking on eBay now to try and find the same one for a 4 iron replacement. Either that or a Nickent 4DX, I've read some good things about that club too.

Nickent and Adams are probably the smallest, and I have hit and like both of them. The Nickent 3DX, the Adams Idea Pro, and the Adams Boxer are all nice hybrids.

I think you are reffering to the Big Bertha Heavenwood, which is actually closer to 4 years old, but fits that description almost perfectly otherwise.

In my stand bag:

909F3 15* with a stock Diamana Blue

I thought that too but I dont remember seeing heavenwood on the bottom, however I did some more research and I think you are right. They were so long, I was able to hit over 240yards on a clean struck shot.

How are the fusion hybrids, and the diablo hybrids in comparison to the Heavenwood?

The Adams Pro hybrids are smallish and set up nicely like an iron with a square toe.
They also feel fantastic.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I had a PING G10 hybrid that just didn't work well for me....I wanted to like it...but I didn't do so well with it.

I wound up trading it for another stick.

A few months later on I'm playing a round with some folks...one of them is puring his hybrids...yet he wasn't hitting that great of iron shots. He was floating nice high shots from 170-200 yards like it was nothing with these hybrids. I complemented him on the shots at the end of the round. We were walking off the 18th green when I did so......he pointed to the adjacent driving range at our club and said c'mon....let's walk over there and you can hit them.

I was sold right away....the ball just jumps up and floats out there like nothing I've ever hit (I'm a low ball hitter). He said that he thought NIKE was gonna be replacing them soon with something from the DYMO series.

I wound up ordering the 4 hybrid and gaming it.....loved it so much that I also ordered the 3 hybrid. They are the two in my sig line. I'm still waiting for the 3....called and check yesterday...still not here.

That's the thing with me, somewhat. The irons that I can hit are extremely long, but my 3 and 4 irons are just too inconsistant. Sometimes they will be going 170yards, other times they will fly past 230.

The hybrid I was uisng was super solid and much more consistant. I knew more or less my shots would travel out to 220-230. Also the feeling/confidence that swinging a hybrid produces is, IMO, similar to the feeling/confidence of swinging a short iron.

I used to be so against hybrids, now, I am ready to advertise them to anyone.

    • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉
    • Thanks, interesting to read. The swing is definitely very timing dependent. I hit it consistently I guess but consistently bad.
    • I've shot 91-74 on the same day before. Couple of years ago played a two round tournament on Bethpage Black. I shot 72 in the first round and 90 in the second. First round I played very well. Second round I played okay, but had about 5 shots that hit the lips of bunkers and bounced down into them. A couple of those wound up in footprints - I was unamused - and I failed to get them out. Anyway - lots of bunkers and my bunker play isn't great and then add a couple of footprints and me getting pretty tired and it added up to a lot.  Only you can really tell though what's causing the variance. It might be that your swing is very timing dependent and when it's timed well you play well and when it's not then it goes all over the place. In that case, some lessons and working on your swing could be the key. If it's more that you tend to feel like you hit it fairly consistently, but you have days where the shots come off and days where they don't, then that's more likely a course management issue. If that's what you need to work on, then you could read Lowest Score Wins and build a plan of attack based on that.  Rest assured though that a pretty big range from high to low is fairly common. Even PGA Tour players often have 18-20 shot spreads from best to worst rounds in a season. It's a common affliction among golfers.
