How do you buy a driver shaft?

I've got a Taylor Made Burner head that has a R flex that I'd like to swap out for a S flex. I'm curious how you actually determine what shaft to buy? Looks like there's tons of different options but how do you even test them out and how do you determine if it'll be a good fit for your club head? Do some pro shops have the ability to test different shafts?

Kevin

many clubs have fitting systems where you can pop in new shafts, other stores have demos made up in a few shaft options. Other than that it is just a guessing game...
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

Save yourself some time, money, and frustration. Go and get fitted by a pro. That is what they do. Cheaper in the long run. Get all your clubs fitted while you are there. There is more to it than regular flex, stiff, etc.. You have torque, frequency, kick point, etc.. Let the pro do his job. Your game will thank you.

Has anyone ever gone to GolfSmith/Rodger Dunn or any major shop and had them test your swing so you can figure out what shaft would be best for you?

I'm close to just driving down to GolfSmith and having them take a look at my swing and having them come up with a good recommendation. You guys think that is smart?

That would be smart and I think it is your best shot at getting something that works.

I would not go to any store that did not have a certified fitter on the premise. As Dan suggested, go to a pro. There is a huge difference amongst shafts even if the listed flex is the same. Some regular play closer to stiff, some stiff closer to regular. Most shafts are made in mass unison and no two shafts are exactly alike.

Believe me, the money is well spent. Assuming your swing never changes you will now know for future reference exactly what you need down to the most minute details. You won't have to deal with any hassles or someone pushing a particular club on you because you swing "105MPH and that means you need a stiff shaft."

A local golf course charges $50 to get fitted and they said it takes about an hour. Does this sound like a proper fitting? How do you know if they are fitting me properly?
