Just wanted a bit of insight from you folks. I normally play with a 33" putter and just recently got a 35" 2 ball. With the 2 ball I have been choking down on the grip. The question being should I cut it down to 34" maybe even more?I am not sure how much this would affect the weight and lie of the putter and see what you folks thought. Any insight is appreciated. Looking here as the Difference in cost to get it cut down rather than actually fit for the putter is significant for me. Thanks.

I think cutting down most putters will affect the way it is designed. the weighting will be shifted, you will probably have to get it re-lied, i believe. Don't quote me on that though

When i regripped my putter, an old Callaway, I cut it down a couple of inches. I expected it might throw it off, but I didn't notice any appreciable difference. I'm also a hacker, though, so nuances in weight/balance probably get lost in my putting flaws.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

It would change the swingweight, but it would probably feel the same as choking up.

Also it might change this balance as well (see pic - not sure what it's called) just a tad.

But you can check both of those and fix it with lead tape.

If it were me and it were a fairly cheap putter I'd cut it if it were too long. But I'm a do-it-myself-no-matter-the-consequences kinda guy.

Edit: Looking at that pic now I realize that it won't change the balance as shown... but I think it might change it slightly if you did that same test holding the shaft at the balance point.

Been playing just a few months but I play almost every day.

What's in my bag: Distance Master Driver, Maltby Trouble Out woods/hybrids, Maltby KE4 Irons (all assembled by me so I can never blame my equipment).

Swing weight should not be an issue with a putter, you are not getting the club into a position where it comes into play, since the stroke is so small.

True cutting down you will take a small bit of weight off the putter but you are talking about a hollow shaft.

I had my VP1 cut down 2 inches from 35" to 33" so that I could let my arms hang and get my eyes more over the ball. I went to go hit a few balls with a new VP1 at 33" at the store and if there was a difference I could not tell.

Before I had the putter shaft shortened I was a bit concerned, however, after having done it, I would never worry about it again. Though it will never be a factor again because now I know what set up feel I need when buying a new putter.
