Recently went to a course where the greens were more 'challenging' (turtle backed greens with some nifty ridge running through the centre). Anyhow, does anyone have any tips on how to better read these greens on longer putts. Does it just come down to experience or do you just ram the thing and hope it ends up close?

Try to make sure u look at the putt from most Sides, e.g front back and both sides, always pick a spot about 10 feet from the ball and say thats where i want it to go and if ur happy and u think its online then getting the distance is the next part i would stay it comes down to good thinking and luck

You should be paying more attention to the speed of the putt than to the line of the putt. Try to hit the putt with lot of break so that it it "dies" in to the hole. More experience will undoubtedly help, as will readjusting your expectations. You shouldn't be trying to hole a 30 footer across a ridge with 7 feet of break, you should be trying to get it close so that the next putt is easy. Once you get used to trying to "just get it close" you'll be surprised how many manage to fall in unexpectedly.

Lag putting is definitely more about feel than technique. I usually spend 5 or 10 minutes on the putting green before a round hitting long putts of various lengths to get the feel for lags. I try to keep my head down on these putts to really cement the feel and the size of the swing needed for the different lengths.

The alternative is to take Harvey Penick's advice and just hit it closer with your irons :) .
