I've been using a 17* hybrid instead of a 3 wood because my course calls for it. I also have a 15.5* 3 wood for when I go to different courses that need it. I hit the 17* hybrid very good and very long. It's great in the rough and off the tee. I was thinking of trading in the 15.5* 3 wood for a 15* hybrid. There is only 1.5" difference in length and I assume the hybrid would be easier to hit and better in the rough. Any feedback on distance or anything else that I would sacrafice dropping the 3 wood or the any ideas on the upside of going 15* hybrid.

In theory you'll be giving up some distance going from 3 wood to 15* hybrid (1H), because of the shaft length and the design differences (it probably compares closer to a 4W distancewise). Just how much distance you'll be giving up depends on your swing and the consistency with which you hit the sweet spot. From my own experience with a 15* 1H a few years ago, I found that I was giving up 15 yards, maybe slightly more compared to when I hit the 3W perfectly. At that time I hit the 1h on the sweet spot much more often, though, which usually translated to more yardage, not to mention much better accuracy. The one downside is that the 1h will come off on a lower trajectory so greens may be a little harder to 'stick' than with a 3W or 4W. A 4W might be another good option since it's usually much easier to hit from turf than a 3W and will have a higher trajectory (and thus softer landing).

I've been gaming a 16* hybrid (which is touted as a 2-hybrid), and have been looking around a bit for a 1-hybrid. The only 15* I've seen is the Nike, which looks okay, but is still a bit pricey. I generally use my 2-hybrid instead of my 3-wood, and hit it 210-215 most of the time, which is about 10-15 yards shorter than my 3-wood.

I tend to hit some worm burners from the fairway with my 3-wood, however, and some topsies, and my 2-hybrid has almost entirely eliminated that problem. I'd give it a shot if you can find a good 15* 1-hybrd that you like.

I would keep the 3 wood. Hybrids just aren't as consistent off the tee for me. If you ever tee off with something other than driver, on tight holes or when your big stick needs a timeout, I would reccomend keeping the 3 wood. The last 2 rounds I played my 3+ over my driver 24 out of 28 holes. I may even drop the driver for a little while.

I carry 1 hybrid, a 2H (to replace a 5 wood). It's a little shorter distance wise, but a good club to use for those in between distances or layups on long par 5's.

As far as I am aware:
wood = more distance
hybrid = more accuracy/easier to hit

I have in my bag:

11.5* Driver
15* 3-Wood
23* 4H
Irons: 4-SW
60* LW
Putter

I should get rid of the 4-iron due to the 4H, especially since I never use the iron, opting for the hybrid every time.

My point is - I replaced my 5-wood with a high lofted hybrid...but I wouldn't replace the 3-wood.

The 3-wood for me is too good an alternative for long tight holes where the Driver would land me in the rough/out-of-bounds!!
