This coming weekend I will be playing a round at Cantigny Golf Club just outside of Chicago. My buddy recommends we get caddies instead of carts. I think it's a great idea, but since I have never had a caddie I'm clueless on what to tip.

The round of golf is $90 and they have regular and honors caddies (no clue what the difference is, but I would expect it has something to do with experience).

So what kind of tip should I be looking to give? Does it also depend on how good of caddie they are or is this just a flat rate type of thing? What types of things make a good caddie? Anything I should be on the look out for?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

My first job was a caddy. I caddied at Butler National. In general an honor caddy is somebody with experience, but don't expect a tour caddy.

A good caddy should keep pace with you, a good caddy will keep your clubs clean, replace your ball marks, rake the traps, fix your ball mark on teh green, help you find lost balls, clean your ball on the green, etc.

In general what ever the base cost of the caddy is, you would make the tip at least that.

Back in the day, I earned $20 as a pay and the average tip was $20, a good tip was $30. A great tip was anything over $40.

The other thing you can do is ask around.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Find out what the minimum pay for a caddie at the club. Your buddy might know, but you could ask some of the members/regulars who play there. You could even ask your caddie what most golfers pay. Minimum where I work is $50/bag. I usually get $60-$70. The rates for guests here is like $125, so I'd guess that the caddie rates will be a little lower since the greens fees are. Use common sense and don't stiff anyone (even accidentally).

In general, the better I job I do when I caddie, the more I make. So, pay is based on performance. Better caddie=higher tip. The caddie should fill your divots, clean your ball, find your ball, get you yardage, and possibly make recommendations. When carrying a bag, it's tough to fix your golfer's ball marks on the greens (it takes time to drop the bag(s) off).

what course do you caddie at?

and I'd say $50 is around avg for greens fees around $90. That's what I normally give. but if I shoot a phenomenal round...and the caddie has helped me get there by giving me reads....telling me what to pull....what kind of shot to play...etc... like what a caddie should do.... then I'll give them more. I've given as much as $100 on top of the fee, and the kid was REALLY cool.

Ask a couple of guys in the pro shop, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Back in HS when I caddied (1998-2001) it depended on which country club I was at. The better one, Plainfield Country Club, I typically got a minimum of $50 per bag. If the player wanted me to participate more in their game and they liked what I did for them, I've gotten up to $120 for a bag. The higher rates typically occurred when you had only one bag to carry and could spend more time with the player. I'd say average was about $60 and I typically carried two bags.
