Scratch wedges

Has anyone played these or own them now. I'm looking into getting them and actually thinking about ordering them especially after reading the review on this site. It said that they are heavy which I'm not a huge fan of but if they work then ill be happy. Thanks.

I have the 8620 Cast wedges... they are new and basically just released into the market. They are spin milled, slightly heavier headed than my clevelands and produce 150% better. I have always been pretty good around the greens but now I can go pin hunting because these stop on a dime. They are definately spin machines.

Do you think the forged wedges will be the same weight and performance wise just with better feel and of course harder to hit?

just because its forged dosent mean it is harder to hit. I think that the forged wedges will have similar performance to the cast. Maybe they will have a little less spin because they do not have the milled faces. I have the 8620 in 53* and 56* and they put a lot of spin on the ball.

I have a forged 56.14 sand wedge. The forged often have smaller heads than the cast clubs, and don't hand up in the rough as much.

You just need to practice with them to get the "feel." That's one reason I don't carry a lob: the smaller-headed 56 gets the ball up well, with some spin. The lob would be handy mainly on courses where they fertilize all the turf heavily, and have brutal rough around the green.

Forged wedge works for me. I realize, however, I don't have the swing for forged irons, especially 5i and below.

I have 3 Tour Department forged 1018 wedges and they are, by far, the best wedges that I've ever experienced. The types of shots that you can pull off with these wedges impresses me each and every time I pull them from the bag. My short game has improved quite a bit since I put these in the bag.

I have TD wedges so I could have them made with any specs that I desired. I didn't do anything radical with mine but they are heavier than most OTR wedges. Personally, I think that the added swingweight is a good thing but it's something that you have to decide on for yourself. I find that the additional weight really helps my feel and distance control.

From what I've read the 8620 cast wedges are also a great product. Perhaps they don't have the super soft feel that you get from the 1018 forged wedges but most golfers don't notice or simply don't care. Many high end wedges are cast and they still sell like hotcakes (ie: Vokey). The 8620 is on that level and does compete directly with many of the other offerings on price. The 1018's are slightly more expensive (not much) and are a great choice as well. Tour Department wedges, since they are hand made, one by one, to your exact specs, are (understandably) quite a bit more expensive. You can get minor things (like swingweight, shaft, grip, etc) adjusted in any of the models (8620, 1018 and TD) so if weight is a concern, don't worry about it. Just give them a call and they'll build your wedge(s) to whatever swingweight you desire.

The forged wedges are good, better than most... but the milled faces on the 8620 make a big difference imo.

havent found anything that beats a nike vr, the vokeys i like but ive been able to work the ball more with the vr

I've got a 53* and a 58* that I've been playing around with in the backyard. They're about D4 (i.e., standard wedge weight). Haven't gamed them yet, but they feel lighter than my Cleveland CG12s.

You're talking like forged irons need any kind of special swing requirements. Forged is just a way of manufacturing the club heads, that's all. They do not require any kind of different swing.

You basically had to put words in the other poster's mouth to make it about splitting hairs. Your statement has to do with the design of the head and not the manufacturing process - apples and oranges.

It's a fact that the manufacturing process (forged vs cast) does not affect the playability difficulty of a set. The post you quoted was correct and was worth mentioning as many people do not realize the way a club is manufactured has nothing at all to do with it's "difficulty".
