Just curious. Do any of these units have a mode where if you wanted to practice on a field, it would allow you to check distances or do these things only work if you are on a designated golf course?

Yes, most of them have a distance calculator feature often called a "Mark" function. You press a button which starts the function and then you just walk to any point and it will tell you the distance from the original mark. Example, you can start the "Mark" from your tee spot and then walk to each of your balls and see how far they are from the tee spot.

I have (and love) the Garmin Golf Logix unit. Was on sale for $199 at Amazon the other day. Also, some 350+ 4 star reviews you can read there. It sells for $300 elsewhere. It has a button on the side, hit it when you take the shot, go to the ball, hit it again, 276 yards, etc.. is displayed. Awesome feature. I use it all the time to get exact yardages on wedges, irons, etc... Visit the Golflogix website for more info, but buy on Amazon if it interest you. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want more info. Awesome unit. Gives you the info you need, nothing else. Waterproof too.
