I know everyone here has heard of this statement sometime in their golfing life. Well, I use that statement 18 times in a round. For some reason, I've been starting to hit the ball very thin from the fairway. However, the results aren't bad at all. Whenever I see a playing partner hitting it thin, it goes wayward, way short, way long, etc. Mine always seem to go straight and with pretty good distance control.

Is there a fitting problem, swing plane problem, stance issue? I still do hit it flush, but it seems more and more of my iron shots are hit very thin without hitting the grass.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I like the results, but it must mean I could get a fitting, fix my swing/stance and start hitting flush shots with correct spin at the flag.

I hit old school Tommy Armour 845s if anyone is interested.

wils0646, Not every golfer is a "digger." Hundreds of very successful golfers have won countless tournaments barely brushing the grass. You've answered your own question. As long as you are not losing distance or accuracy you have nothing to worry about.

with my game i pick the ball in my longer irons and take divots with my shorter irons. Personally I love the mix that I have, it's just naturally that way for me and it works out very very well.

Well, I've been playing for 16 years (I'm 22), so there's a reason why my handicap is pretty low. It comes down to consistency. I need to be playing a lot to play to my handicap. Two summers ago, I was a 3.3 because I played 3-4 times a week. Now, I'm lucky if I play 3 times a month. I've been playing horribly and I think my swing needs fine tuning to consistently shoot better scores. Just think, my iron shots could be much better if I hit them solid.

I know I have swing problems...even the dreaded chicken wing on the downswing, generating low clubhead speed. Maybe that is a reason why I'm hitting it very thin? I don't know. I thought some insight would be great on why people tend to hit it thin.

wow, 16 years? i started golfing just before i turned 14, im 18 now. 6 is quite an early age to start, ithink?

anyway, i find that i hit it thin if i try to overpower a shot. if i keep my tempo i usually do fine. chicken wing on your downswing? you mean on the follow through? i know that i used to do the chicken wing on the follow through and ive never really tried to fix it so im guessing i still do it. i dont think that has anything to do with hitting the ball thin. you might want to try putting the ball a little further back in your stance as well.
