I got a set of titleist dci 990's from my friend a couple of weeks ago after he got some new mizunos. he only used the 6 iron on down and regripped those clubs with midsized lampkin grips. but since he didnt use the 3, 4, or 5 he did not regrip them. those 3 clubs have much thicker grips on them. i am gonna change them after i get paid this week but was just kinda wondering if im hitting those clubs so much worse than the 3 4 and 5 from my old set because of the grips. i normally dont have much trouble with the 3 4 or 5 but i have been chunking these things and havent hit them very well at all. any thoughts?

take it from me a thick grip messes with your mind and depending on how much thicker the grips are can mess with your swing.......i had bought a g15 driver off ebay and it arrived with a huge grip. it felt very nice until i got it on the course.....wooooww it went everywhere....changed to a golf pride multi cord and now its hitting fairways.....i would change all of em to the same grip to be more accurate

ps i had a set of 990 a while back...hit em good for about 2 years and switched........last year i played a round with a old friend who plays on the hooters tour and he still hits em

Goofy grips can easily cause goofy shots. Its amazing how much grips can affect shots. I prefer pencil thin, sticky grips. Helps my feel and helps me turn the club over.

I'm confused. Aren't midsized grips larger than standard? So, the 3,4,5 should have smaller grips than the other irons in your set?

So the 3, 4, and 5 irons have larger grips than the rest? Midsize is larger than standard so those grips must be oversized?

I would recommend getting a club fitting. The shafts may need to be changed, lies & lofts may need some tweaking, grips changed, etc..

Man if wrong sized grips is bad, the idiots at taylormade sent my irons to me last year with ribbed grips on them (didn't ask for them)....only the rib was on the TOP of the club. So yes, bad grips will screw with your game...a lot.

I believe larger grips will cause you to miss right and will cause you to have problems releasing the club.

*I think* I could be full of shit, it wouldn't be the first time.

I believe larger grips will cause you to miss right and will cause you to have problems releasing the club.

That's exactly correct. Using grips that are too thick will generally cause you to push the ball right. I know, because I just dealt with the exact opposite. I bought a set of "pre-owned" Callaway irons and they re-gripped them before sending them out. These grips felt like ladies grips and man, was I hooking my irons.

A thin grip really activates your hands in the swing and causes you to turn the club over too early, whereas too thick a grip makes turning the club over harder so you tend to come through impact with an open face...that's not accounting for anything else that's gonig on in your swing. I had no idea how much grips could affect your shots, but after talking with a pro and having him look at my grips, he said that was a big part of my problem. I put on the Golf Pride tour velvet and it's really helped me out.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.

    • I would not do anything until I met with an instructor and got your swing looked at. There are some obvious better club options out there though. Spend 50 bucks on a lesson, practice and start piecing together a bag that works for you. Enjoy the journey.
