So while playing a match against my partner I fell apart in the first 9 and fell down by 5 holes.

As we came around to the back I made a grip change and put the club more into the lifeline of my left hand ( right handed so top hand )
Boom. Out drove him, straight with a little draw at times. I managed to come back to within 1 hole.

Anyone grip the club like this? Any forseeable reasons to stop doing it? I felt it helped me keep my left wrist flatter and under better control, which was translating into straighter shots.

In my bag:

Nike SQ DYMO 10.5
Big Bertha 3 Wood
Big Bertha 3-10 IADAMS Tom Watson Classic 54,58 and 64 Wedges Nike Oz 5 Putter/Wilson Staff ( not sure model, bought it in second hand store ) Ball: Bridgestone E6

Top you mean the one closest to the butt end of the club? Because when i hear top i think the one that goes ontop of the other, if so then you have a cross grip, because usually for a righty the right hand is wrapped overtop the left hand.

But more in the lifeline of the left hand, its a presonal preference, there is no wrong answer here. I would say if it helps you out, go for it. I play with people with strange grips and they can kick some butt on the golf course.

No good players have the club in the lifeline of their top hand.

  • 1 year later...

I start my grip under the left thumb pad...keeping the top side of the clubs grip (the part of the grip you see at address) and then i just wrap around that into a Vardon grip...im not sure what your mentioning by the "lifeline"? but i was told to do this through a video by a very good instructor named Martin Chuck. He also developed the Tourstriker training club which has helped me immensely on consistent contact.

anyways...by lifeline you mean...?

Proper Golf Club Grip

What is the secret to a great golf game? A perfect golf swing. A great golf swing begins with proper golf club grip . Golf pros, executives, weekend hackers, and average Joes from all over the world will say, that for you to have a perfect golf swing, you must get a grip. A proper golf club grip that is. You may not have known, but there is not just one proper golf club grip – there are many.

The Vardon Overlap is the one most used by the best golfers. This grip is also called the overlapping grip, because the overlapping of your hands help them work together.

The Vardon Overlapping grip is done by taking the little finger on the trailing hand and place it between the index and middle finger on the lead hand (for right-handed golfers, the lead hand is the left). The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand.

guy with the 0 index knows his stuff.....NAHHTTT

Uh, yeah. I said the top hand. And the grip.

Not the trail hand and the thumb.

no need. why don't you grab a club, take a grip with your top hand and your handle going through the lifeline. you're not going to be able to hinge your wrists.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
