i haven't played in one, but i have a family member who has, forgot who he played with, though. it's pretty expensive, around 3-5 grand per person depending on the tournament. but i'm not sure if it's luck of the draw or what. but i'd be pretty pissed if i got paired up with briny baird and after paying the same as the guy who got paired up with tiger or phil.

Just check out the Tournament websites and look under "Sponsoring" i think. There they have listed all the options, that also include ProAM spots. But Senorchipotle is correct with his estimation of the costs. For an example look here - http://www.wyndhamchampionship.com/proams/wednesday.htm

I was wondering, when you read about some of the ProAms you frequently come across the better known players who often seem to play with "buddies" - is this a fair draw or can players invite guys and prevent this way to play with "unknowns"?

I play in a Nationwide Pro-Am almost every year, I think I have done a total of 5 or 6. My company does a lot of business with the title sponsor so it is a good trade off. They get to bring in a donation, and we get extra business for the donation. The cost is $11,000 for a foursome. I would assume that the PGA tour would be more, but how much I don't know. It's not the PGA Tour, but I have played with a few guys who have gone on to the PGA and been successful.

It is pretty much luck of the draw on who the pro is. I don't know if the sponsors take care of the pairings or if it is the Tour. The tournaments like the AT&T; Pro-Am at Pebble Beach is a completely different thing. Any tournament that has 'pro-am in the title is different. Usually the pros pair up with a amateur partner for several rounds. The pro-ams that are held on the Wednesday before are just one day with the paying public. In ours, the amateurs play a shamble and take the best score using handicaps. It is a nice format that moves pretty fast and takes a lot of pressure off.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I played in the pro-am for the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, near London. I played as one of the 3 amateurs with pro Oliver Fisher, a young up and coming player. The pro-am badge included clubhouse passes, and we changed in the locker room along with the pros where I chatted to Rory McIlroy (I have the same NI accent as him), we practised on the range beside Graeme McDowell, and there was a dinner and prize-giving event after where Rory McIlroy came to get the pro prize and he did a Q&A; with a BBC interviewer.

On the course, there were decent crowds, and Ollie had a 65, so it was great to see that up close. Lovely guy who was friendly and helpful.

It was a fantastic experience all the way.

How did you get the spot? Company sponsoring or did you purchased a package? If you or your company paid for it, would you mind sharing the info? Thx.

The charity contribution is $4,060.

Are those charity contributions tax deductable for companies and/or privat persons? Because that would make it a lot cheaper then...

Either. So if you're total tax rate is about 40% fed+state your tax savings would be about $1600, meaning the whole package costs you about $5 grand. Four days of golf, some goodies, passes to the tournament, a couple parties and a dinner.....it's still decadent but not all that bad.

I played in a pro am two years ago. The ginn sur mer classic in Florida. It was a fall PGA tour event but it was still nice. Our group got an early lottery pick and we played with Lee Janzen. He was kind of a knob though.

The cost was $5000 a person but it was free for me as I was an invited guest of a sponsor.

The whole thing was first class. When you checked in they took you to a room filled with Vokey wedges and Scotty Cameron putters and told you to pick out one of each. I was blown away and felt like a kid in a candy store.

We finished second at 18 under. The winners were at 19 under. For second place I took home a very nice crystal trophy. And I did my fair share of scoring that day so I felt pretty good about my contribution.

In my bag:
Driver: R5 TP Diamana 83s Shaft
Fairway: Burner 15 degree Fujikura REAX
Hybrid: Custom 19 degree
Irons: DCI 990 S300 4-PW

Wedges: NF 52.04*, Spin Milled 56.10* and 60.08*

Putter: Red X3

Ball: ProV1

Shoe: Tour 360 LTD

I have played in several NW and 1 PGA pro-am. My company was one of the main sponsors of the NW event, so our foursome was included in the major sponsor's package ($50,000ish). I played as a guest of in the PGA event, I believe it was roughly $20,000 for the foursome.

The swag bags were AWESOME. For the NW event, I was given a Nicket hybrid, a Taylor Made walking bag, a Taylor Made travel case, a small travel bag, 2 dozen ProV1 logo'd balls, and a pair of fitted Ecco golf shoes.

The PGA event was even better. I received a Scotty Cameron putter with a special edition logo's head cover, a set of Cleveland wedges, a pair of sweet FJ Icon shoes, an Ipod, and pair of Oakley sunglasses, a tournament logo'd Ogio carry bag, 2 dozen Prov's and bunch of other knick-knacks. It was like Christmas!

I played in the John Deere back in 2006. I was paired with Pat Perez. We were the tee time just in front of Michele Wie so we had some crowds. It cost around $4000 but that included the coctail party on Monday to pick your pro, a golf tourney on Tuesday with local pro's, and ticket's for the week. We also got something like $700 to spend at the Titelist tent.

Woods: Titleist 909 D3, Titleist 909 F2
Hybrids: Taylormade Rescue
Irons: Titleist AP-2
Wedges: Titleist Vokey spin milled
Putter: White Hot 2 ball.

They asked for my ghin # so I assume you need one, at the event I played it was basically a best ball with full handicap. And there were some high handicap player's. You should be able to check the tournament website and if there are openings, and you have the cash, you should be good to go. I was just put with other singles to make a foursome. I wouldn't pay that much again, but it was worth it for a one time deal. One of my playing partners was a college kid, he had his dad caddieing and his whole family was following. It was a nice vacation for them.

Sounds like a great time! Yes as mentioned decadent but actually not as bad as I thought. Especially for Torey Pines. Plus you can justify it by saying it goes to a good cause and all the "free" swag you get.
