Swing feels normal; everything shooting way to the right

So I went to the shore with some friends, and we decided to play at Shore Gate (awesome course, by the way). However, something crept into my swing that for the most part ruined the round for me.

Since I hadn't golfed in about a week beforehand, I went to the range and hit a few iron shots. They started off pretty well, but then immediately they turned into low slicing shots that took off way to the right. At first I thought I was hitting it off the hosel, but it seemed to be that my club face was wide open upon impact. I've never experienced something like this before, and really have no idea how to correct it. I haven't been golfing again yet, but hopefully it won't happen again. The thing is, it's not like I felt my swing was bad or anything; in fact it felt as good as ever lately, but for some reason I keep hitting these low slicing shots that go way off to the right. Anyone else here experience something like that?

Sounds like you have a case of the shanks..  put your change in your other pocket and turn your hat around and you'll be fine..

Seriously though, search the internet or this forum for help with the shanks.  Not as big of a problem as you might think...

Several possible remedies...1) Review your grip: weak, neutral, or strong...turn the club to a slightly stronger grip (more knuckles). 2) Verify your swing plane: inside-out, outside-in, or the proper line of inside-target line-inside.  3) Check your ball placement based on club selection:  too far behind center, center, or ball placed too far away.  4) Ensure your body doesn't get into the way of your swing...makes it harder to rotate your hands to square up the club face before impact.  There could be other issues, but I figured I'd cover some of the basics.

It does seem that you've played this game for a while, so stick to the basics: Proper stance, swing, and most important of them all and yet easily forgotten rule is to focus on ball contact, don't take your eye's off the contact spot of the ball; try not to look where it went until you've completed your swing.  Hope this helps, good luck!

That's so funny and true. Somehow I came down with the shanks a few weeks ago during a round, was so frustrated that I couldn't fix them, I went out the next day in different golf shoes and they were gone! I know its all mental but sometimes I feel it can make a difference

Thanks for the responses, guys. It seems that having my left arm have more control of my swing has helped me square the face up better at impact, along with having (what seems to be) better and more consistent ball-striking. I hope I'm not steering myself in the wrong direction with this.
